Sheryl Crow vs. Streisand vs. 5th Dimension

Wow! This is a difficult one for me, LC! My older sister had the 5th Dimension 45 when I was growing up, so that one is embedded in my memory.

On the other hand, Sheryl's version sounds fantastic..so fresh and soulful.

I love both...one (5th's) for memories of yesterday when I was young and didn't know the impact of the lyrics...I just knew I loved the song.

And the other (Sheryl's) version for facing the reality of today...when those lyrics could easily hit home. Either way... I'll always love the song.

Thanks, LC.

Barbara's version is a distant third for me, also.

All good. I like Sheryl's the best. Why? Because she sings the notes Burt wrote, just the way he wrote 'em. Because I just like Sheryl's voice. She doesn't try to overpower the song, she just sings her little heart out and hits all the notes dead on.

Barbra feels the need to "make it her own." In the process, she loses some of the beautiful simplicity of the song. The sheer wonder of her voice almost makes up for going a bit over the top with it, but not quite. The "twin Barbra's" kind of screw up the intimacy.

The 5th Dimension ( now THERE's a name! ) have always left me a little cold. They just seem a little too slick for my taste, although Marilyn McCoo does give a nice vocal performance. She strikes me the same way Karen Carpenter did. A bit too perfect. I want to muss up her hair a little, and give her a shot of Scotch and a cigarette. Ok, babe, let's try that one more time.

Ahhh Eric - the Ronettes are a girl group - I love the Ronnettes and Martha & the Vandellas, the Go Go's and the Pointer Sisters to name a few girl groups.

I like Dionne and Leslie and Aretha but not enough to go out and buy an entire CD of their greatest hits (but I do have 1 or 2 songs on my mp3 player) for each of them. (You'll note I did say "most" female singers). I certainly don't like any current female singers out there - no one has impressed me enough to even download a song of theirs.

I'm sure to cause some kind of reply posts when I say I don't like ANY country singers - not male or female - just don't like country or jazz music - I do not own any country cd's at all. And no I didn't buy the latest Bon Jovi cd..... The farthest I go with country is I have My Maria and El Paso on my mp3 player lol.

I do like Linda Ronstandt though as a solo singer and have a greatest hits CD.

Did I clarify my statement enough? ;)

I think you should take a listen to "Cry", "This Kiss" and "Let Me Let Go" by Faith Hill. They're hardly anything I would consider "country." They're just great records. "Cry" is so good it gives me chills.

Dionne Warwick's greatest hits are all those brilliant Bacharach-David songs. "Walk On By", "Don't Make Me Over" "Anyone Who Had A Heart".....Those are some of the best pop songs ever written!

Dionne Warwick's greatest hits is essential for any collection. If you have 2 or 3 Warwick songs , chances are you don't have 'Are You There With Another Girl' or 'Anyone Who Had A Heart'...this is crimminal. Lesley Gore's Greatest Hits should be in every collection.Astrud Gilberto's music is some of the best mood setting music on this Earth. I'm not a huge fan of female vocalists...but some are essential.

I will consider your choices. Thanks for your input. Now here's something humorous since you are talking Dionne - in elementary school each year we had to do vocal concerts for the parents - they always picked me to do a solo and what a coincidence - for two years in a row I had to do Dionne songs lol - one year it was Message to Michael - the other it was Trains and Boats and Planes ahahahah... the last year they made me sing Close to You. My mother still bitches because some girl erased her tape recording of me singing and she was promised a copy ahahha - I was glad it got destroyed.

Did you guys know that Quincy Jones produced all of Lesley Gore's hits???? What a coup! And, they were arranged by Claus Ogerman, one of the greatest orchestral jazz arrangers in the world today.

Now that's some serious heavyweight talent on "It's My Party" Judy's Turn To Cry" and (my personal favorite) "Maybe I Know."
