BeatleJay
Eric, I loved it when you guys did 'No Reply' at the Chicago show. Beatles For Sale is a great album.

hollies65
When I was a kid, I got so used to the American versions of the early Beatles albums, it was like hearing a brand new record when I finally heard the British version.
hollies65
BTW, The Middle in 'I Don't want To Spoil The Party' gives 'Baby's In Black' a run for it's money...the "IIII...STILLL...LOOOOVE HER" part.
Shelley
I don't know how the hell I missed this thread Joan Jett...Hands down I never heard of Sweet...until you guys started talking about "Little Willy"...I never cared for that song, probally explains why I never heard of them. Lew...Your the man Eric Carmen Rocks!!!!!!!(you mess with him and you mess with me..and trust me you WON"T win )
marvin
Shelley I would think you would know "Ballroom Blitz" or "Fox On the Run" before you'd know "Little Willy."
James
Hey Waq20659, high-five to you from me! First let me say, the Sweet board ought to take a collection and send a check to Lew (as we should). You've got to admit his stuff is pretty genius. I'm sure many on that board have sore stomachs from laughing so hard, as we all do. Second, inspired by your post, and in the spirit of peace.. I'm buying a Sweet album today. Their songs are pretty catchy, and if a guy like you likes Eric Carmen AND Sweet, maybe there's something to their music. You seem to be a class act Waq, welcome to this site.. Signed, James ..The Peacenik

Shelley
Sorry Marv...never heard of them...I just went to youtube and listened to the beginning of "fox on the run", and "ballroom blitz"....I never heard either one of them before....sorry

I would think anyone who grew up in the 1970's (making assumptions on your age here, sorry!), would know this song. "Fox On the Run" also a Top 5 hit, but probably not as well known as "BB." RP50
From Eric's comments about the lyrics to "Little Willy," I can only assume he doesn't have much use for Little Richard's body of work - which would be a sad thing.
Shelley
Sorry Marv...I graduated HS in 1977, I'll be 50 this October...I don't remember hearing any of those songs
hollies65
Heh...I'm your age...I don't know how you could have avoided hearing them. They not only were on the radio constantly...they were played at all the dances!
Shelley
That explains it...I never went to school dances..They sucked, My friends and I would have our own parties...and I'm sure they were played on the local radio station, but if a tune didn't catch my ear right away back them...I probally would have changed the station... It's still played on the radio today. It's all becoming clearer to me why Sweet is getting such a bad rap here, people thinking they only did "Little Willy": there are many people here who are not familiar with their music - even though they had many very popular, big-selling songs. hollies65
'That Girl Can't Help It'...'She's Got It' 'Lucille'....not much mystery in those lyrics...Even 'Tutti Frutti' is very straight forward.
LC
I wouldn't say Sweet has a bad rap here at all. "Little Willy" has taken some needling, but overall, there are at least a few fans who remember them from the 1970s. The "bad rap" centers more on the (fun) little feud between camps than on music. That said, there are some here who don't like or (in my case) are totally ambivalent about Sweet. And that's okay. Music taste is a very personal thing... there is no "right" or "wrong" when it comes to the music we listen to, IMHO.
MJ
Maybe it was the part of the country she was living in didn't play it on radio - or she wasn't into glam like the rest of us lol.... I lived in the Tri-State area so it was all over the place....on the radio on tv...... My old friend in NJ NEVER even listened to any kind of music (her family were strict Baptists) until I got a hold of her - ahahahha - she was immediatley introduced to Beatles, Stones, Who, Led Zep, Kiss, Mott the Hoople, Hendrix, Edgar Winter, all kinds of music from 1973 onward - she ended up workin in a heavy metal bar once she moved out of her parents house....her family was mortified ahahha. They always said I corrupted her....with all the music
Shelley
Your right on that one MJ...No "glam" for me...thats not my thing..I grew up in R.I....listened to WPRO FM...I just don't ever recall hearing them
dianed
Don't feel too bad, Shelly. I, too, have never heard of plenty of the music mentioned...especially that 867 "whatever the heck that number" is song....and I'm sure that one was played all over the stations in NY. Sweet..on the other hand...was played constantly on the radio stations.
RP50
AWOPBOPALOOBOPALOPBAMBOOM, Tutti Frutti awrootie - Gibberish. Bama Lama Bama Loo - gibberish. Heeby Jeebies - gibberish. Marvelous, world changing lyrics that defy explanation and don't need one, but gibberish just the same. And lyrics that set a great precedent for anyone who was stuck for a line and decided to throw in some gibberish to fill out the phrase - right Eric? The bridge to "Tonight," anyone? hollies65
'I got a gal, named SueShe knows just what to do [Repeat]She rocks to the east, she rocks to the westShe's the girl that I love best"I know what he's referring to.
Dave from Equinox
That thing in the bridge of "Tonight" was put in there as a tribute to Little Richard, IIRC.
RP50
Big deal."North side, east side,Little Willy, Willy wears the crown,He's the king around town."I know what that means. You can make sense out of the lyrics of most songs (well, maybe not "Paralyzed" by the Legendary Stardust Cowboy) You know what I mean.
