Tim From Wisconsin
It's pretty frickin' crazy! But, it sure brought a lot of new traffic to the site... and it boosted the "Action" on the Sweet site! This is certainly a thread for the archives. Hey Bernie: Maybe there is still room in the new version of Marathon Man for a Sweet chapter!! Tim
Wendy-Ann
In honor/honour of The Sweet/Sweet, I found an old English love song about a guy/bloke and the love of his life/his bird. It's like the British version of Go All The Way. Don't let the misspelling of the title fool you. I'm posting this on two other threads too, just so I can share the love! Hollies/posting board police - I'm giving you a heads up so I don't get a citation from you.
Eric Carmen
I'm trying to imagine what it would feel like to have to sing "Little Willy" onstage, night after night. I think I'd rather hang myself. I can see the crowd, chanting and shouting "Sing the song about the small penis.".....It gives me the heebie jeebies just thinking about it. It would be bad enough when you were twenty, but to have to sing that song at 40 or 45??????? I'll bet they cursed Chinn and Chapman a couple of times for that one! Bloody Hell!!! No wonder they were a bit irritable!

Brian Mc Carthy
Eric i think by the second night you would change the lyrics to Little Willy WANKER !
Anna R
Oh My Wendy...what a find that was! I laughed till I cried! Since Lew has been MIA today- you have more than made up for his absence!!
Wendy-Ann
Anna R said: Since Lew has been MIA today- you have more than made up for his absence!! Well, with Lew being held captive, I, being his love slave and part of James' harem, had to keep his memory alive. Like Mary Bono when Sonny died (except Lew is very much alive, though we haven't gotten any more reports from the Sweet board)...sometimes, you just have to step in for your man! No wonder they were a bit irritable! I guess I was just a naive 12 year old when that song came out. In any case, here are the lyrics and you can decide for yourself LITTLE WILLY North side, east side, Little Willy, Willy wears the crown, he's the king around town Dancing, glancing Willy drives them silly with his star shoe shimmy shuffle down Way past one, and feeling alright 'Cause with little Willy round they can last all night\ Hey down, stay down, stay down down 'Cause little Willy, Willy won't go home But you can't push Willy round Willy won't go, try tellin' everybody but, oh no Little Willy, Willy won't go home Up town, down town Little Willy, Willy drives them wild with his run-around style Inside, outside Willy sends them silly with his star-shine shimmy shuffle smile Mama done chase Willy down through the hall But laugh, Willy laugh, he don't care at all Hey down, stay down, stay down, down 'Cause little Willy, Willy won't go home But you can't push Willy round Willy won't go, try tellin' everybody but, oh no Little Willy, Willy won't go home etc... Eric Carmen
Brilliant, that! Like poetry! Oh well, taste is always subjective, but I defy you to find one song of mine ( with the possible exception of a few lines in "I'm A Rocker") that makes as little sense as this. What the bleedin' 'ell are they singin' about? It's like gibberish! I've heard three-year olds make more sense than that! Must have taken them eons to come up with THAT lyric! Slaved away for minutes on it, I'm sure! I don't know about the rest of you, but this song really emotionally "connects" with ME! In Britain, "willy" is slang for penis. waq20659
Hey guys,I'm one of the notorious Sweet luvers from the Sweet Glam Forum. Just wanted to drop by and say Hi. There are a few Americans on the board, I myself am from Maryland. And its "Funny Funny" that Little Willy is the song that got me hooked on The Sweet way back in 73. I have been a big fan since and joined the Sweet board a few years ago. There are quite a few fantastic Sweet songs that I would recommend: Funny Funny, Wig Wam Bam, Poppa Joe, Teenage Rampage, Blockbuster are some of their better early bubblegum songs; of their mid heavier sounding songs try: Ballroom Blitz, Fox On The Run, Action, The Lies In Your Eyes, Fever Of Love, Healer plus many more; and then there's their more progressive sound: Love Is Like Oxygen, Mother Earth, Sixties Man, Call Me, and Give The Lady Some Respect. So you see there is a whole lot more to The Sweet than just LW. I Hope we can put this silly war between us aside, afterall we all are just "music lovers".I also like The Raspberries amd have their Greatest Hits cd I also have Eric's "She Did It" 45 around here somewhere. Bye for now
waq20659
I don't know Eric, it may have silly lyrics but it's a very catchy tune, afterall it got me hooked back in 73 when I was a 13 year old kid.
hollies65
Let's not forget that most of their early hits were written by Chinn/Chapman.Chapman did great things with Blondie!

Chinn-Chapman wrote a bunch of songs with non-sensical lyrics, that somehow managed to connect with the listening public and go to the top of the charts - in the UK and in North America. I just don't understand why people are picking on this one song by Sweet, as if it's the only song they ever did. Is it embarassing? Yeah it probably still is to them, but they are not the first or last artist to record a song of this ilk. I recall John Lennon saying that he'd be embarassed to be singing "She Loves You" or "I Want To Hold Your Hand" if the Beatles had contiuned their career. hollies65
I love those early Beatle songs. I MUCH prefer the first 4 Beatles albums to the last 4.
hollies65
This thread has been a nice diversion from the grim economic news. Thanks to all involved.
waq20659
I just checked my cd collection and I guess I'm a bigger Eric Carmen fan than I realized, I have The Best Of Eric Carmen, The Raspberries Power Pop Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 (which are actually their 1st 4 albums). Now I gotta play them to refresh my memory.
Anna R
I don't know...somehow those early classic Beatle songs defy embarassment, to me anyway. They are so simple, yet so pure.Like a good wine, they age well! But, what do I know... hollies65
To me those early Beatle albums [up to 'For Sale'] have a magic urgency and energy, that were missing on the albums that came later...although every Beatle album is great. Eric Carmen
"Beatles for Sale" is my favorite of all their albums. That would be one of my "desert island" records, for sure.
hollies65
Yeah...people alway complain about it having a couple of covers...I love their take on 'Honey Don't'. Any album with 'I'll Be Back', 'I don't Want To Spoil The Party', 'No Reply' 'Every Little Thing' 'What Your Doing' and yes ...'I'm A Loser' is a classic. Their most underrated and the Beatles album which sounds the freshest to my ears.
Eric Carmen
No ReplyI'm A LoserBaby's In Black ( perhaps my favorite Beatles "middle eight" of all time)I'll Follow The SunEight Days A Week I Don't Want To Spoil The Party All on one album, just "banged out" in a couple of weeks. Ahh, those were the days.I could have sworn I used to have a British copy that included "Yesterday" and "Ticket To Ride" or "I Feel Fine" as well, but I could be mistaken.
