Ecstasy,

We just got back from my in-laws in Carol Stream. My wife grew up in Wheaton on Cross St. You must be close to there. Today we ate at a restaurant called "Carol's Garden" on Main and Geneva. Great place to eat. I had a honey chicken salad and it was great. I have been losing weight. For Lent I gave up all sweets and I feel a lot better! My clothes are getting looser. I plan on continuing the sweet restriction indefinetely. I do it ever Lenten season and then revert back. I am not sure why. I feel so much better. A former colleague of mine lost 40 lbs in 3 months by restricting to 1800 cal/day and running. I will start running at Spring Break in a week and a half. I believe 13 lbs in a month is too much so I would be happy with 8 pounds. Good Luck

Phil

AAARRRGGGGHHHHH!!!! You were right down the street from me!!!LOL I eat there all the time!!! Cross St. is downtown Wheaton by the library. I'm right over by Wheaton North High School (and Carol's Garden nearby.) I'd love to meet up with you sometime if you'd like. It'd be fun! With the weather getting nicer we could have a barbecue here and keep it simple.<smile>

It sounds like you have a good plan that's working for you. As long as you're feeling good you're on the right track! I used to lose about 12 lbs/month and felt alright but when my endocrinologist had me "eat less and exercise more" it became way too much for my system and I crashed --- severely. That was the end of my thyroid and my adrenals. I didn't stop when I felt dreadful because I was stupid enough to believe that if he said so it must be. (Yeah, right.) Follow your instincts and if you're feeling great then stick to the plan!

Kathy Lee... Perhaps you should have big loud speakers mounted to the outside of your house and play Eric's music and then when board members visit Wheaton they will hear where to find you.... laughinsanespin

And you could "pipe" the music into your new bathroom as well.... winkhappy

You aren't as far off as you might think with that bathroom idea. One of the things John and I have been discussing is running wireless speakers throughout the house so that we can hear our music everywhere! This "relaxation focus" has really become a motivational point for us and it seems to be paying off with some health benefits. You'd think that with Annie and me tearing out entire walls it would be enough physical exertion for me to lose some weight but thyroid doesn't work like that. I get discouraged and disappointed but I refuse to give up and just focus on the rest of the project and the other fringe benefits... like a serene bathroom with wireless speakers!

That sounds cool! Or, how about a little waterfall?! Lol!

I have a 2.6 pound weightloss to report for the week! I am now down 21.6 pounds. (not sure what the measurements are in NZ--sheeps legs? chocolate fish? metric?)

I've been walking more outside because our weather has improved. I've been picking up a lot of sticks and small branches. It's going to rain for a few days now though, so maybe Darling Hubby will have some ideas for indoor exercise!

Blessings,

Julie

I guess we really are family here because this is beginning to become a little eerie. laugh I was just looking at a bamboo fountain the other day and bookmarked it to add to the corner of the new countertop! It has a lovely stream of water from a bamboo spout with soft glowing light (ought to go nicely with the candles Muzza suggested, that I had also thought of. smile Eerie.)

GREAT job of 21 lbs so far, Julie!!! I'm SOOOO jealous --- but in a good way. wink You're right in that it is a lot easier to get moving when there's fresh air and sunshine to help the cause.

Well, if at first you don't succeed... My alternative doctor increased my thyroid meds and my naturopath added a new supplement called Iodoral. This is an iodine supplement which is supposed to enhance the thyroid and help it to kick in. Well *something* is trying to happen because my basal temperature is going up (a very good sign!), I have just a touch more energy, and my joint pain is diminishing! Not exactly earth-shattering but it's a start and we'll go with that for now. spin

It might be a little early for this but I'm praying for the best. pray It appears that the iodine supplement is doing something because I've lost 5 lbs this week and haven't changed my diet at all! It's supposed to help the cells absorb the thyroid meds and get your metabolism to work correctly so here's hoping it continues. I've also worked really hard at increasing my water intake throughout the day.

I still don't have the strength to do any consistent exercise yet but I've switched Brian to active duty helping me tear apart the bathroom and gave Annie some much needed time off. (I still get tired to quickly so I need a partner of mass destruction. :P ) One of the great things that's come of all of this is that she's discovered a real love of interior design. This fall when she turns 15 and is a freshman she's eligible to take interior design at the local college (she's also taking photography!) spin Maybe she can pick another room and turn it into a haven for us as a school project! happy

Wow Kathy Lee--that's some loss for the week! The iodine supplement sounds interesting! Good idea to icrease your water. That's something I always resist because of the increasing in the um...well...um, you know! But, it is so good for you.

Cool on tearing that bathroom apart! You're on your way now!

I got some new workout DVD's while shopping in Mankato, MN yesterday. Just got done doing one. I do Leslie Sansone's "Walk Away the Pounds" workouts. I love them. Have heard people claim that they aren't a tough enough workout, but I beg to differ. You can make things more intense and you can do her longer programs. Anyway, to stick with it, I have to find something I can stand to do over and over. Hers are good enough to keep me interested.

Have a good one!

Thanks, Julie! Increasing water is much easier in spring/summer than it is in the fall/winter when I'm freezing to death. eek I'm about to increase the fruits and veggies, too, but I'm trying to do one thing at a time slowly so I don't sabotage my efforts by changing too much too quickly to maintain.

I have a few of Leslie Sansone's videos, too! I was just doing the really, REALLY simple stuff for awhile but I hope to get back to it someday when my stamina increases. (I was doing most of my walking either outside or on a treadmill.) I've been considering trying to do maybe 20 min of freeweights 3x/week and see if I can handle it. I wouldn't use more than 2-3 lbs at this stage or Diane will hunt me down and kick my tail for overextending. :P I really enjoy this thread and it helps alot. It's nice to have others to talk to who are working on changing things themselves and can form a team with you! You always do better with friends! heartpump

I try to keep Muzz in line...but you know what "kids" are like when it comes to chocolate etc. He says "less goodies this week"....ummmm I wonder if that includes Hot Cross Buns and Easter Eggs...Perhaps I should suggest he forgo his Easter Eggs this year for the good of his waistline!!!! laugheye

Good Going Everyone! I'm always looking for new workout tapes and have been curious about "Walking" ones. How do they work? Are you like marching in place? I'm a fair weather walker, so I'd like to find something for those cold, rainy days. My 2 new favorite DVD's are "The Bar Method" Fat-Free and Designer Sculpting. Just a warning, when I first started doing these I overdid it and sprained some ligaments in my leg. These tapes use a lot of dancers movements. I have to laugh, when I told my Mom, she said, Honey, maybe you're too old to be a ballerina. Ha! :p

Julesberry--it's much more than marching in front of your tv. But, it doesn't take a lot of space. If you don't have a lot of room, you can just stand there and "march". Leslie Sansone, the Walk Away the Pounds" lady, has 4 basic moves. There is the walking in place, the kick, the knee lift and the side step. Google her name, and you'll get to her site and she has some clips of her routines you can watch.

I'm totally addicted to Walk Away. I have 13 DVD's and 1 VHS tape of hers. She has 1 mile, 2, 3, 4 and 5 mile workouts. I pretty much stick to the 1 and 2. I never get bored with them. You can also use hand weights, a stretchie band, her ab belt and other things.

If you're serious about getting one, I would recommend my favorite--the Express 2-in-1 DVD which has a 1 mile Easy Walk and a 2 mile "Brisk Walk". Barnes and Noble have a fair amount of her tapes. She also has workouts for older adults, kids, and some floor routines--like the ball.

Get thee to her website and snoop around in her "store".
