I'm very discouraged but I'm trying not to give in to it. I lost another pound (that makes 28 relost after the 40 I regained when my adrenals collapsed) but I'm just so wiped out dealing with this chronic health stuff all the time. The minute I stop a supplement my body immediately reverts back to where it was --- my iron is low again and causing anemia-like symptoms on top of the adrenal junk. wink

By the way, Muzz, after having met you last year I can't understand why you feel you need to lose weight in the first place! At least you're doing healthier things than most men would bother to do and that's a great effort. Congrats! king

Ok, help me understand this. I just lost another pound. That makes 29 so far this round. Still that's not a lot. I began packing for our trip and found that my jean jacket and sandals from last year were HUGE on me eek and I'm buying clothes a size down. That's a big difference but not on the scale. I'm wondering if it's muscle and I'm working harder than I thought chasing the boys around and caring for them. confused

Levaquin (pneumonia medicine) made me anorexic and I lost 11 pounds in 3 days, but it was mostly water weight--I dehydrated!

Don't lose it that way!

Soaking Lorna Doone (or any other butter-rich cookie) in water and eating them will put much-needed H20 back into your body and you'll keep it down if you have the flu. Then, your appetite WILL come back and you'll retain the water and feel better. That's how I got my appetite back.

And did I. I "rediscovered" the appeal of food.

I'm enjoying eating to the point where I gained my weight back and will be monitoring the calories once again now that I'm recovered.

I've also, unfortunately, rediscovered apple pie a la mode!

I'm glad that you're finally bouncing back and becoming yourself again! I was having all kinds of problems after three rounds of stomach/intestinal flu --- body just couldn't handle it anymore. It's sounds like you're on your way, though! Don't forget to replenish you Vitamin C, too!

Lost 4 more lbs!!! That's 32 of the 40 from when my adrenals went haywire so I'm getting closer! spin

Jay (Jay52) has been an amazingly supportive friend heartpump and has been gracious enough to set me up with his acupuncturist. He does acupuncture, acupressure, and reflexology amongst other treatments. I don't care WHAT he does to me as long as he can get the horrible pain to lessen and hopefully kick in my thyroid and adrenals more! (A recent homeopathic treatment by my alternative doctor has damaged my neck and spine so badly that my jaw ended up misaligned and even my chiro can't get the adjustments to hold so we need to find someone who can reverse this!) My first appt is this Thursday so say a prayer and wish me well because I'm a bit frightened. eek

I've been really hesitant to participate in this thread but as many in this age group (yikes!) I have a few too many pounds I'd like to shed too...I also have thyroid problems....The right lobe was removed in 2000 for nodules which showed inconclusive in biopsy...the original pathology came back fine while still under the knife so they left the left lobe...later path on the frozen sections came back questionable so off went tissue samples or bits and pieces to Stanford who also concluded some pre-cancerous tendencies....two years later nodules popped out on the left node..I take high doses of synthroid every day...125 mcg's to suppress it...I had an ultrasound last week and the nodules haven't changed so that's a good thing...if we can keep them from growing we're not going to rush into things.

Anyway...my point in all this is that I have a heck of a time trying to lose weight...I gave up all bread, snacks such as chips or cookies...sweets of any kind in November...I was even good through Christmas...at one point I did have a sliver of pecan pie and a sliver of pumpkin but I even removed the crust...I've stayed close to a more low card regimen but adding in my friuts and veggies if I want them and since November until I visited my Doc three weeks ago I had lost only 6 pounds...I wanted to cry...hardly felt like my sacrifices we're accomplishing anything...so...if anyone has some insight or knowledge of a miracle please enlighten me...My Doc say's the synthroid should not affect my inability to lose weight but I've read posts on other boards of other people having issues with it too...I'm just a chubby girl who would like to drop about 4 dress sizes and walk without my knees creeking and be able to get back in the saddle again haha "literally"

Margaux, I'll be the first person to support you and even partner with you in this process if you'd like! This has been a lifelong battle for me which has left me abused, humiliated, and eventually abandoned by conventional doctors for a weight problem my body can't control yet. (One even tried to send me off to the Mayo Clinic for a psychiatric evaluation! This was the same idiot who blew out my adrenals!) The most common phrase I've heard my whole life is, "Kathy, you'd be so pretty if only..." This illness has cost me my self-esteem, my health, and four children to miscarriage. You are NOT alone and you won't be from here on out if you don't want to be!!!

I have been blessed to not have thyroid cancer yet but I have dealt with nodules that have caused difficulty breathing, swallowing, and sleeping. I've done years of meds and recently thyroid ultrasounds (which I need to set up as soon as I stop typing LOL) and needle biopsies that have left my entire neck purple, swollen, and unable to move. I get about 90% of the picture you're describing, sweetie.

You can toss these suggestions out or research them at your leisure.

1.) GET OFF SYNTHROID!!! THAT'S what was causing my nodules! I took it for 25 yrs and it did nothing while my condition worsened. GET ON ARMOUR! It's all natural thyroid and makes a huge difference (my nodules actually shrank once I made the change.) Your biggest problem is going to be finding a doctor who will prescribe it because as you stated the big push is for Synthroid. Look for an alternative doctor because they're more likely to use natural thyroid.

2.) ADD a T3 medicine. I take Cytomel because my body will not automatically convert T4 to T3 the way it should. T3 is the ACTIVE element that will cause you to start losing weight, stabilize sleep patterns, stabilize moods and anxiety, improve skin/hair/nails...

3.) Add Iodine and B12. If you aren't allergic, add iodine (I take Iodoral) and B12 because your cells need that to absorb thyroid and utilize it. Otherwise it stays in the bloodstream. What will happen then is that your blood tests will say you're thyroid is in the range because it'll pick it up in your bloodstream. What it WON'T say is that it's not in your cells because it's not being absorbed!

4.) Limit cruciferous veggies. There's something about them that can slow down the metabolic process with thyroid. Pay attention to broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, cabbage...

5.) Exercise to bump up your metabolism. Notice I didn't say to lose weight? Don't worry about that yet. Just get your body used to moving and burning things as best it can and see what happens. Your body will continue burning for hours after you've quit.

6.) Consider looking into non-conventional treatments. I've had great success with chiropractic and I'm now looking into acupuncture/accupressure and am willing to look into reflexology and deep tissue massage. These manipulations move the toxins out of your body and kick in the organs so their function improves.

Oh, yes, and as a friend here reminded me:

7.) Avoid soy products. They interfere with thyroid function (probably similarly to what cruciferous veggies do.) I don't usually eat soy so it's not something I'm used to thinking about and I forgot to mention it.

Being a pleasantly plump fella ever since an accident 6 years ago, I know all about gaining a bunch (over 200 extra pounds) and trying to get it off. The ONLY thing that has actually worked for me is the simplest thing in the world. I found out about Paul McKenna a few months ago and I'm shocked, but his method is working for me. I do not diet. I eat what I want, but only when I'm hungry. When I feel full, I stop (key factor). I drink bunches of water and I'm just getting to the point where I can take a brisk walk 1 or 2 times a day. I've lost 20 pounds in the past three weeks. Something tells me I'm into something good! McKenna has a show on the TLC channel. More info at www.tlc.com/thin.

Maybe it won't work for everyone, but I've tried every diet known to man with dismal results. This one is working. smile

I found out that if I slow down while enjoying a meal, the appestat in one's brain says, "Enough". Sometimes we just eat too quickly and on the run in these busy times.

The best thing I ever did for nyself to get the child-bearing fat off was to increase the vegetables and decrease the breaded, fried or prepared foods.

Now, I have another problem: Trying to keep the old clothes together. They don't make safety pins as strong as they used to,and even the thread made these days isn't always that strong when I alter a garment.

Shopping time. YAY!!! I LOVE it! I will also have a longer life span.

Congratulations, MAM!!! You're doing a phenomenal job! You're right in that sometimes it's just a matter of finding what works for you --- health issues, metabolism, type of exercise, sleep patterns... You've obviously come upon a great thing for you! I'd really love to hear about your progress as you continue. Keep posting to us and let us know how you're doing (good or bad) so we can encourage you!

Thanx Kathy Lee....I appreciate the advice and will talk with my Doc when I see him again to review my ultrasound results..he's a pretty good guy and easy to chat at.

Also...I forgot to mention that I put on alot of this weight during chemo 4 years ago for Breast Cancer...they we're adding sterroids to the infusions to assist me with tolerating the treatments as I was having a real hard time...I didn't know anything about sterroids or the effects they would have on my body.

I'm going to check out the link MAM posted too...I do try to be active as long as the weather permits...I'm not one to go running hahahahahaha but I like the mountains and the hills and I get out in my 4WD and go exploring every Sunday if I can....Me and my dog...I also do situps...usually 50 every other day and sometimes everyday...I bought a great resistance device that works great for those.

Anyway...thanx for all the tips happy

I'm doing pretty well at the moment. I'm down another 3 lbs which means I've lost 35 of the 40 lbs I gained with my adrenals! If I can lose 5 more lbs I'll be back to where I left off and can start counting more new loss after that. Keep in mind this isn't easy and I have a team of four getting my body to kick in gradually but the acupuncture seems to be the final key in getting everything to begin falling into place!
