Daisy McLintock
Yeah I know G. I'm just not a huge Beatle fan so I got them wrong. What can I say???
GMan
Then you must be educated!!! lol
Daisy McLintock
Educated in Beatles? Ok I missed that point?
hollies65
The Beatles are the touchstone for modern pop/rock music. Anyone with a passing interest in pop music should know about the Beatles and their music. For instance, The Beatles are who inspired Eric [And every Raspberrie] to play in a band. He can tell you exactly when it was that he first heard and saw the Beatles...as can practically every member of this board.
GMan
I couldn't have said it any better Steve.
Daisy McLintock
Oh I see what you mean then, G, after seeing Hollies explanation. I need to be educated in the way of the Beatles. Okay. And fair enough. Now what I'd like to understand more of is why I should know more about their music? This is an honest question, not a sarcastic one, ok? I do know Eric was inspired by the Beatles, I remember reading that. Other than that is their a musical reason, something else I'm missing? GMan
Daisy......They changed the world. Their music has inspired almost everyone who is anyone and then some. Young lady...you MUST be educated on their music! Now I'm starting to sound like a teacher. lol
MJ
um yeah - they changed the way music was recorded - using George Martin who took them into whole other areas of writing and using different instruments - the Beatles pretty much shaped the 1960's music scene... they influenced every-day people besides musicians - hell my dad absolutely loved Penny Lane and all of their songs - there's not a song that is played by them that I don't have a great memory associated with it - like what I was doing the first time I heard it - or some other moment.... you can see the progression from them from their early beginnings in songwriting to their later work.... what were you listening to during your childhood???? Daisy McLintock
G -- being a teacher is totally okay with me! Looks like I need one!
hollies65
I have no idea how much of the Beatles music you are familiar with. I know every Beatles song by heart...as I expect most here do. Discovering the Beatles...if you were not around when they hit [i was...although I was 5...doesn't matter] and their music is a rite of passage most music lovers go through to this day.The amount of great music they put out in 6 years [Think if an artist did this today...from 2002 -2008!] is absolutely mind boggling! Daisy McLintock
MJ - As a child I listened to Tom Jones, Mary Poppins, Carole King, and Elvis, to name a few that I remember and stand out in my mind. I am not entirely certain whether my mother bought them because I liked them or because she liked them. I guess that part doesn't matter, or does it. Guest
"The Beatles are the touchstone for modern pop/rock music. Anyone with a passing interest in pop music should know about the Beatles and their music." Hollies65The Beatles influence on society at the time was amazing. As they matured with the times, a whole generation of kids took on their world view. From "I Want To Hold Your Hand" to "Helter Skelter" - the Beatles made a huge impact on our lives during those years. Whether it was their hair, politics or music, young people all over the world took notice and many followed.I think I may have mentioned that I was lucky enough to actually see the Beatles twice... once when I was 17 in Detroit, and once when I was 20 at Shay Stadium in NY. Jay52
Barbara..If I may ask, was your Shea Stadium show in 65 or 66? I would love to read your memories!
Guest
You know, I'm not sure... (I'm trying to figure out what year it was when I went to NY). I had a cousin who ran "The Daily Telegraph" - or - "The Morning Telegraph" in New York, and he got me unbelievable seats in Detroit (right on the floor of the Olympia Stadium - where the Red Wings played back in the day). The Shea Stadium (thanks for the correction on the spelling Jay) seats weren't that close, but the energy was absolutely amazing. Just seeing them live was unbelievable. We were completely deaf when we walked out!!! But what a thrill!!!!

marvin
With all due respect, I cannot fathom ANY fan of popular music not appreciating, understanding or acknowleding the importance of the Beatles.
GMan
The 1965 Shea Concert was the one I ALMOST went to. Since I was only 10 years and I would have been going with my cousin, who was 18 at the the time, my parents reneged on the idea so there went my dream of seeing The Beatles "Live" kaput! Oh well...I have the film though. lol
Daisy McLintock
I know what you mean about incredible energy, Barbara. I love it when I attend large events that make people excited. You can feel the energy of everybody and it's just great.
mannoman
I managed to answer them all correctly but truth is I have never been a big Beatles fan. Oh sure, I recognize their huge contribution to the music world but IMHO, virtually all successful artists and their music is a matter of timing. I am sure if the Beatles had emerged during the big band era their music would never have seen the light of day.
hollies65
I disagree completely...Macca would have killed during that period. No, the talent was too great..Just take a look a that catalog.
mannoman
I knew you would Steve - but than doesn't change my opinion. The technology didn't exist in the 40s that would have taken advantage of their talent. Their talent was primarily John and Paul playing, singing and writing. They were great songwriters and produced some amazing songs. IMO, George was an average guitarist and Ringo an average drummer (at best -no pun intended). I base the Ringo comment on the fact that I played in a few rock bands back in the day and I could duplicate Ringo's sounds - and I was NOT a good drummer. To Marvin's point, I appreciate and acknowledge their importance. But it was also, the right place at the right time. The same holds true for Elvis whom I believe to have been more showman than talent. How do you feel about him?
