Captain Harlock
Okay, as some of you know I'm in an improv comedy group (go to New Haven Theater Company\'s Website and click on "Funny Stages" Link For More Info ). Anyway, they said for the next show to wear "business casual". What exactly does that mean? Nobody gives me a straight answer and it's driving me up a wall. You have to remember that I have absolutley no fashion sense what so ever. The most expensive item of clothing I own is my New York Giant jersey. So can somebody out there in the EricCarmen.com family help me out with this one?
MJ
Business casual is like a polo shirt and slacks - no sneakers....... you don't have to wear a tie or anything, no jeans...... kind of dress preppie lol.

Bessieboo
This is a guideline we use Business casual is crisp, neat, and should look appropriate even for a chance meeting with a CEO. It should not look like cocktail or party or picnic attire. Avoid tight or baggy clothing; business casual is classic rather than trendy. Basics: Khaki pants, neatly pressed, and a pressed long-sleeved, buttoned solid shirt are safe for both men and women. Polo/golf shirts, unwrinkled, are an appropriate choice if you know the environment will be quite casual, outdoors or in a very hot location. This may not seem like terribly exciting attire, but you are not trying to stand out for your cutting edge look, but for your good judgment in a business environment. Shoes / belt: Wear a leather belt and leather shoes. Athletic shoes are inappropriate. Buy quality: Do invest in quality that will look appropriate for a business casual environment or occasions. Everything should be clean, well pressed, and not show wear. Even the nicest khakis after 100 washings may not be your best choice. Carefully inspect new clothes for tags, and all clothes for dangling threads. Use common sense. Avoid wearing gym clothes and jeans. If you show up at an event and realize you're not as well dressed as you should be, make a quick, pleasant apology and make a good impression with your interpersonal skills and intelligent questions. Specifics for men's business casual Ties: Ties are generally not necessary for business casual, but if you are in doubt, you can wear a tie. It never hurts to slightly overdress; by dressing nicely, you pay a compliment to your host. You can always wear the tie and discreetly walk by the room where the function is held; if no one else is wearing a tie, you can discreetly remove yours. Shirts: Long-sleeved shirts are considered dressier than short-sleeved and are appropriate even in summer. Choosing white or light blue solid, or conservative stripes is your safest bet. Polo shirts (tucked in, of course) are acceptable in more casual situations. Socks: Wear dark socks, mid-calf length so no skin is visible when you sit down. Shoes: Leather shoes should be worn. No sandals, athletic shoes or hiking boots. Wear a conservative watch. If you choose to wear other jewelry, be conservative.

Give me an example.

Captain Harlock
If I do that I'll probably come home with a new amp or a Playstation 3.It's no secret to anyone that knows me that I HATE buying clothing. Nothing fits and I keep going back to what I know. Jeans and t-shirts. The biggest problem I've always had is that I have no where to wear any of it. Was I really supposed to get all dressed up to go and see Cheap Trick? A bit of a waste I think. And right now I don't have a wife or girlfriend to help me with any of this. MJ
Bring a woman - she will direct you to the men's department and force you to purchase something that MATCHES.

And they look like TOOLS when they do it. No self-respecting male would DON that 'garb' and still consider himself a man. But SHEEP are a dime a dozen. Captain Harlock
Yes, they do wear themThey were them on dates and concerts, and ((gasp)) sporting events!! Maybe they wear them to see golf or tennis. Personally, I don't think I've seen anyone wear that to a baseball or football game. As for concerts, what concerts? I don't remember anyone dressed like that in the 30 plus times I've seen Cheap Trick. Billy Joel maybe? Dates? Those were always hard to come by for me. I hate for you to think I'm being difficult but again, this is unknown territory for me. And again, I don't see anyone I know wear this kind of stuff so it's not going to look "normal" to me. mannoman
Put on a pair of tan Dockers (or similar), a blue button-down oxford shirt, blue blazer but don't wear a tie. That should do it. Oh, the blazer is generally not necessary unless there are customers visiting.
Bessieboo
My husband and sons are all very rugged "manly-men".When they kayak or hike, run, swim... they wear the proper gear for that event. When they go out to dinner they dress for the level of that restaurant and differently for South Beach Clubs. It depends where you live, when I go to North Dakota and Montana to visit family, I dress more simply so not to offend or stand out too much. When you need Business Casual of Casual elegant attire you should not wear a swimsuit or snowsuits or hiking gear...or Tshirts. You should conform to those guidelines. Was Eric's outfit at WAB outside your comfort level? Just wear a little nicer pants- not jeans.Sometimes Jeans are okay, but they must be Very nice and fairly new.

I can probably count the times I've eaten out at restaurants on one hand and I don't think I've been out to dinner in over two years . And all I could remember about that was saying "how can you put mushrooms on a steak!?!?!". When you've been single as long as I have been going out to eat is kind of sad and pathetic. I'm not sitting at table alone.Like I said, I just go right back to jeans and t-shirts. Eric's outfit was alright but I don't picture myself in anything remotely like that.
