JohnO
I just read about this one....and there are quite a few of these cards up for auction on Ebay. Someone who works for Topps, who puts out baseball cards, thought it would be funny to doctor Derek Jeter's 2007 card....which shows him swinging at a pitch. In the background, there's Mickey Mantle standing in the Yankees dugout, and George W. Bush in the stands! Topps apparently discovered these shenanigans, but not before a bunch of the cards were issued. It's Topps card # 40, if anyone's interested.... angelina
Topps cards are filled with funny, ironic little tidbits throughout the years. My personal favorite is Billy Martin, as Tigers Manager, sporting a flipped middle finger on the handle of a bat.
JohnO
There was also an excellent Topps card of Aurelio(sp?)Rodriguez, and I don't remember the year ('69 or '70?), where his card had the picture of his team's (Angels) bat boy instead of AR. blackhawkpat
Anyone remember Billy Ripken's card?
marvin
Pat a better question would have been: "Anyone remember Billy Ripken?"
angelina
LOL Marvin....... Yeah being Billy Ripken is sort of like being Wayne Gretzky's brother Brent.
JohnO
Isn't that the one with the obscenity on the bat?Billy will always be remembered in my neck of the woods, much like Tommie Aaron....the younger and much less talented brother of an all-time great.... marvin
Wayne had two brothers who made it into the NHL, neither of them had much success.
JohnO
Ebay activity on this card has gotten totally ridiculous since the newspaper and internet writeups on it.As of early yesterday morning, 2/27, there were 70 active Ebay auctions involving this card. As of 2 minutes ago, there are now 2,756!!!...and all but 49 of them were added yesterday or today. Sounds like a very large number of these cards got out..... Paulie Mississippi
I've always suspected that with the Billy Ripkin card and forward these "errors" are actually planned to heighten the interest in the cards. "Regular issue" cards like the Topps set used to be collectable themselves, but with the advent of such things as hi-def, gloss, holographic, gold trim... etc, etc, ad nauseum... the basic baseball card has become something of a necessary evil as a vehicle to hunt for the premiums in. I used to be big in card collecting, but when that Ripken (FF) Card came out, then came the correction, then the correction of teh correction... pretty soon it was laughable and obvious to me that they (Fleer in this instance) were just using that "error" to give them market share over Topps and Donruss. And with this article and the eBay activity... it looks to me like it still works.
Paulie Mississippi
I just read a story in today's USA Today that has a TOPPS official quoted as saying that they spotted this "prank" during the "editing" of the cards but let it go because they thought it was cute. The "correction" will only be done for the full-set collections that will be shipped later in the year.In other words, anybody who's paying big bucks to buy this "rare" card can go to the store, buy a box of Topps cards, and probably find 2 or 3 of them... And another generation of baseball card collectors gets burned...
JohnO
As of this morning, there are now over 3,000 Ebay auctions for the card, but it appears that winning bids have fallen from $100+ down to the $15-25 range. It's starting to look like maybe the corrected card, when it comes out, may be rarer than the prank one! Paulie Mississippi
I think you're right there JohnO; in fact I'd go so far as to think that perhaps they're only correcting it in the sets to drive set sales... because I know they've been sluggish the past few years... CubbiefanMike
I wouldnt pay a nickel for a Jeter Mantle Bush card.
CubbiefanMike
Now if it were a card featuring some of the 07 & 08 Champion Cubs players and President of that year that would be cool.
Kirk
I have a card off the back of a 70's Twinkie box that is supposed to be Milt May (name, stats, etc.), but the picture is Lee May. One is white and the other is black. Wonder what it's worth? Kirk.
