Muzza
I was reading an email from a friend and they mentioned the nickname people had given his motorcycle and I wondered what interesting "names" people have or have had for their cars, motorcycles etc.I had a Ford Escort called ERNIE and a yellow Toyota Corolla called THE LEMON. What about you?? Give the reason as well if possible.Muzza
mellie
I have never named any of my cars, but my brother used to ride around in his best friends WORM - an ancient, ugly, greenish-brown station wagon.
angelina
Hi Muzza:I had an old Chevy Nova in college I called "Thundering Turd" because it sounded like a thundering herd of cattle...among other reasons. JohnBonnie always calls her cars "Betsy"....I just don't know why.John
MJ
I had a little yellow Opel GT hatchback back in the 70's - we named it The Yellow Submarine - because if you went into a large puddle - water came in the passenger side of the car... we did a lot of singing in that car - including the aforementioned song..... Raspbernie
You guys with your yellow cars. I had one, too! It was my first brandy new car--a Plymouth Arrow back in, oh, '79, I think! Anyway, they sold that car with television commercials using the Harry Nilsson song, "Me And My Arrow." I loved that car! And it was YELLOW! Wow. I've never been much of a bright color, stand-out-from-the-crowd kinda guy, but it's hard not to when you're driving a BRIGHT yellow car. I think my next car was gray. And the one I am currently driving is black. Might be time for a new brightly-colored car :-)Bernie
Brian Michael Page
OK Bernie, I'm going to torture you with another yellow car tale...December 1998 - car in my possession was a 1981 canary-turd-mustard-yellow Chevette. I don't remember the exact numbers on my tags, but the first two letters were "OY". OK, I could think, "Oh vey! It's a Chevette!"Anyhoo, at the church where I was music director and organist at the time, the junior choir I was directing was invited to sing at two different Hasbro facilities (this church was just blocks from both of these facilities, and the lady who coordinated the events is my cousin's wife). Anyhoo, while piling into cars, one of the girls asked me "Mr. Page, what does OY stand for on your license plate?" The first answer I could think of in a pinch was "Old Yeller" (it was old and decrepid and "yeller"). It stuck since.BMP
AnniekNY
my kia sportage is "pepper red" in color so I call it "Peppy" - which is an oxymoron since it only has four cylinders and has to get out of its own way going up a hill.I think girls name their cars more frequently than guys.BUT - the ultimate "ungrateful children award" goes to my beloved offspring. Pete bought them a 1993 Ford Taurus wagon to get around in (118,000 miles)almost a year ago. They call it "The Shaggin' Wagon" as revenge. They are 16 and 19. They won't get another car any time soon! AnneG
I've named all my cars (as well as my husband's). My favorite name was "Der Bingle". Many years ago I got a Volvo in December..needed something swedish/nordic..it was December...Bing Crosby..so I used his German nickname as it could be said in a swedish accent.Anne
aggiesjc
MJ!!!! We had two Opel GTs in my family for many, many years. Finally sold them on eBay - one to Columbus, OH and one to Norway! Kirk from our board has had one for a long time, too.
Reid C.
Hey Muzz! We've got a bunch of them! When you have multiples of the same model, it pays to have a way of distinguishing one from another.1971 Norton 750 - "Scruffy", because it is.1973 Norton 850 - "Carmen San Diego" Because that is were we found it!1974 Norton 850 - "Ray's Bike" Purchased from best friend Ray and we couldn't think of anything better at the time.1970 Norton - "The Music Box" Found in a Los Angeles garage right next to the base of the stairs that were used in Laurel & Hardy's famous piano moving short of the same name. I had leaned up against the garage wall while changing film during a photo shoot four years prior to being sought out by the owner to buy the bike. I was totally oblivious to the fact that it was leaning against the same wall right behind me!? Nortless - "Lassie" An unlikely melange of Norton, Matchless, Suzuki, and Triumph bits that when combined, made a surprisingly competent sixties-themed motorcycle. Due to her mongrel heritage, one club wag christened her "Lassie, the Beautiful Dog." Tried to quash that one, but once out, the damage was done.We also had a '73 AMC Gremlin Levis Edition, a really great car that didn't deserve the brickbats it received. Called her "Blue Thunder" in order to upgrade her fierce factor. Hey, we tried!
Captain Harlock
I had a 1980 VW Scirocco. I don't think I gave it a name but I did say "MOVE IT YOU PIECE OF S#$T" a lot to it.
MJ
Wow Jen two in one family!!!!! My poor car got totalled by some woman driving 65 mph in a 30 and slammed right into my drivers door up my the hinge - luckily neither my passenger nor I were injured badly - she had a child in the car who bumped her head. We all went to the hospital on my insistance and then the lady lied to the cop about her age! The cop said to her behind the other curtain "Lady I've got your driver's license in my hand I KNOW how old you are!" My poor Opel was totalled! They towed it away and I never saw it again (SOB)...She tried to sue me in our municipal court not even the County court (because she was driving her boyfriend's demo car from the lot). It got thrown out but I still miss my Opel!
hollies65
a 74 mazda wagon with a rotary engine...fast as all get out some pretty heavy exhaust though. Some guys called it the mosquito truck [because of the exhaust] but in a moment of true inspiration we spray painted 'RAT PATROL' on the side. If you remember the TV series no more explanation is needed.
Bessieboo
My sister and I shared "Bertha", a big, blue, heavy, Buick Le sabre that couldn't go over 50 mph. My sister took it with her when she went off to school. Then Daddy bought the "Green Latrine" for me the uglyist pea green Delta 88 or Impala(I don't know cars). It couldn't go over 50 either. Years later, Dad told us how he looked and looked for the uglyist, reliable, big-slow cars he could find for us to start out. He didn't want us to think we were too cool. Muzza
Hey Guys. I love your responses. Seeing some of the models you drove makes me smile 'cause here in New Zealand some of them had dubious reputations, even if they didn't make it here.I just remembered I had a 1952 Vauxhall Velox (British car) that was called "Kactus Kate" because of the name of the paint I painted it with.I wonder what EC calls his Jaguar??Muzza

Julie
Well, on the farm we name our trucks and tractors. Currently we have "Papa Smurf"--a gynormous Ford/New Holland tractor, "Violet" and "Ruby" and "Pete" are some of the old grain trucks we use during the harvest. The star of our semis is "Pearl"--a beautiful white semi with a white grain trailer. Lol! The "rule" here (with the exception of Papa Smurf) is that they have to be named after someone we know.
