Wendy-Ann
Actually this is what Mel Gibson said in the press. Mel Gibson has come under fire for being hard on Jews in his film “The Passion of the Christ†— but apparently; he feels that Protestants are also doomed to damnation. In fact, it looks like Gibson, a conservative Catholic, believes that his Episcopalian wife could be going to hell. Gibson was interviewed by the Herald Sun in Australia, and the reporter asked the star if Protestants are denied eternal salvation. “There is no salvation for those outside the Church,†Gibson replied. “I believe it.†He elaborated: “Put it this way. My wife is a saint. She’s a much better person than I am. Honestly. She’s, like, Episcopalian, Church of England. She prays, she believes in God, she knows Jesus, she believes in that stuff. And it’s just not fair if she doesn’t make it, she’s better than I am. But that is a pronouncement from the chair. I go with it.†Now, I don’t know about any of you, but I don’t care what Mel Gibson thinks about who is and who isn’t going to Hell. But let’s at least give the proper quote. Nowhere does it state he thinks that she is going to hell because she doesn’t believe his anti-Semitic views. I, as a Catholic have been told I was going to hell by born again Christians, just because I am a Catholic. So be it, whatever. None of them are the final judge.Since Weds, I have been dealing with the attacks in the press about Tam Paton, former manager of the Bay City Rollers. Tam died on April 8th. I loved him like a father, my heart, is broken. I can’t believe I will not see him again in this lifetime. The lies, upon lies that are being spewed by former lead singer Les McKeown (as well as anyone else who is trying to get some PR) are beyond horrendous. Tam can’t defend himself. It tears me apart to see what is happening, watching someone you love crucified in the press, on line and emails being sent but people who don't know a damn thing. So while all of us are chit chatting about Mel G. and what he will and will not lose and what he thinks and doesn’t think, etc...remember, this could be you one day. Whether it is in the press, the internet, a message board or the neighborhood women chatting across their white picket fences. I doubt Mel will ever know anything about this thread nor care...but one never knows. In the end, we only know what the press has stated...we don’t know what is going on between him and his wife and most of all we don’t know Mel Gibson. This must be a sad time for his whole family. Too bad it now has to be public because he is a celebrity. No one has to like him, no one has to hate him. I for one could give a damn about him, but I had to say something as he is not here to say anything for himself. And rest assured, if I see one of you needing a "back-up," I will not hesitate to be there, if I so see fit. There is a family about to break apart here, screw the billion dollars...I’m sure both sides will live nicely on half of that each. I only wish the best for them and hopefully their private life can stay as private as possible.

Tim From Wisconsin
I was shocked to learn he was worth a billion dollars...I mean...wow! Tony Cartmill
Mel's got that personality, he always seems like he's one drink or one happy pill away from shooting accross the room like one of those big balloons you blow up and release without tying off... I'm sure his wife has "earned" every penny she's going to get...
Tony Cartmill
I enjoyed "Apocalypto"...But Mel just gets off too much on showing gratuitous violence. And as his wife rolls her eyes another time, can you imagine how many times she has had to put up with Mel's giving into the "Passions of the Hollywood Temptations of the...Whatever" All speculation, of course...from his admitting how much of a "sinner" he has been...You just have that feeling. missm
Wendy - what you said is very interesting and very true. As a practicing Catholic, I have wondered since Mel said what he said about who is going to hell, and made that little movie (The Passion)what Catholic church he belongs to. I also have to wonder what Mel is "practicing". As for his divorce... well everyone has a limit to the amout of foolishness they are willing to tolerate from their partner. I will have been married for 25 years this September (unless there is some foolishness on my husband's part...naw, I keep him very busy and broke thus too tired to do it and too broke to attract that sort of thing)and firmly believe that this decision was not arrived at easily by Mrs. Gibson. This situation begs the questions 'Why would he put himself and his business out there like that?" "Does he want everybody all in his kool-aid?'People (i.e the media) are focusing on the money and not the lost relationship and trust and the collateral damage (the kids). Wendy thanks again for sharing..

darlene
The only thing I can say about Mel is that he's talented and he has firm convictions he lives by. And he's not afraid to say what they are. That's all I know about him, never having dated him myself. :-)What Mrs. Gibson knows about him is another matter, one for her to act on. However, she DID stay with him a long time, so I don't expect he's that much of a jackass, unless she was only there for the money, which makes her one. --Darlene
raspathens
C'mon Eric, you can't walk on eggshells! I have this great image of Mel asking his lawyer, "Did she say her name was Judge Bernstein?"

Tommy, can you explain how a smart guy like you could get screwed over so bad? Is the system that messed up? What is the justification for your ex getting more than half, when she's the one who cheated? Is there something you are leaving out? marvin
OK, Here's what I know about Mel.He belongs to a radical branch of Catholicism that doesn't recognize the reforms of Vatican II.His father is a renowned bigot who denies the Holocaust killed many Jews.He was arrested for a DUI and spewed anti-semitic remarks at the arresting officer, including "Jews are the cause of all the world's wars."And, he produced and directed the homo-erotic, ultra-violent film "The Passion Of The Christ," which, in addition to being the sickest, most unwatchable exercise in gore, torture and murder ever filmed, also placed the blame for Jesus' death squarely on "the Jews" who are portrayed as demonic throughout. He's fathered seven children with a woman he has publicly stated he believes is going to hell because of her Episcopalian beliefs.Other than that, he's a swell guy. Hmm...I wonder if he thinks "Tonight" is better than "Ecstacy"?
James
The Jews that killed Jesus were the bad guys in the Jesus story. They just were. It doesn't mean though the Jesus story promotes the notion that Jews are bad in general, or promotes hatred against Jews. It doesn't. No more than mafia movies promote the notion that all Italians are bad. They don't. My gosh, Jesus, Peter, Paul and all the early Christian fathers were Jews! In my Catholic upbringing I was taught the Jews were the chosen people, and taught to revere Jews. If anything my Christian upbringing brainwashed me to be too pro-Jewish...at least in my case. That upbringing, and my reading of history has made me a huge fan of the Jewish people.P.S. As a funny aside, I have many Jewish friends here in Chicago and I always tell them this story about how I was raised to revere Jews etc etc. And then I tell them I always did revere Jews.... until I met some (them) in real life.. And they love the humor, because they trust me..

Add to that, that as an Italian American I have always felt a closenesss to the Jewish Americans I know here in NJ to the Italian Americans in NJ especially in regards to importence if family, mother, tradition, good taste in food, clothes etc.All that aside I love and admire, for the most part, Mel Gibson certainly more than the typical liberal, deviant, atheists Hollywood usually produces/attracts. missm
James - I, too, have been taught (and firmly believe) that the Jews are the chosen people and have friends who are Jewish. When things like this come up, I wonder why no one seems to recall that Jesus Christ was Jewish? Yes, the Holocaust did happen and it is the sorriest and most shameful chapter in human history. Slavery was close, but the Jewish people experienced that slavery in addition to the Holocaust. It seems that all religions have their splinter fanatical sects, such as the Seventh Day Adventists have the Branch Davidians (David Kouresh)and Baptists had People's Temple (Jim Jones) and Catholicism has this group (thanks for sharing that Eric - I will have to read about this) of Pre-Vatican II individuals. With regard to the portion of Eric's post relative to Mel's belief that his wife would go to hell because she is Episcopalian it just may have been a statement of truth known only to Mel. She married him and has (no doubt) been in hell ever since. Okay I will put my soap box away..
