When I hear her vocal rendition of that cornball "Stand By Your Man" her voice is powerful and haunting. I'd rather listen to a cat fight than Celine Dion. Sheena Easton showed some promise during her "Prince" phase, I guess. Merry Clayton was impressive in the DD tour. My best friend, Dulcy, used to rent from him! We celebrated Christmas Eve/Christmas morning there -- at the house they and Dan shared -- one year. Talk about your practical joke gifts! We all got water guns in our "stockings," except the guys' sprayers accidentally got "stuck" with Crazy Glue! LOL!! They all got soaked, but us gals had a GREAT time!P.S. I wentto hear Eric's new band, and they didn't perform.I was so disappointed, but somebody introduced meto Barry Manilow's bass player and he invited me to Clive's after-show party, where I met Melissaand Barry Manilow and a bunch of other people. She was great, and I LOVED "Midnight Blue." Eric's not performing kind of dampened the whole thing for me though. I think they put Gil Scott-Heron and the Midnight Band on instead or something. (Gals -- Christine Lavin had me about to pee my pants when I first heard her sing; she is a scream!!)And oh, how I'd treasure a Christmas compilation from Eric! Maybe he could do lunch with Chip Davis, and they could iron out the details?? Mannheim Steamroller is usually only instrumental. What better voice to add than Eric's?? I'm afraid that, when I was at my best, I sounded most like Karen Carpenter, as opposed to sounding like Olivia Newton-John or Cher. I am certain that other chick singers sounded more like Karen C. than I did. At the moment, unless/until TPTB (The Powers That Be) come up with a cure for Arnold-Chiari malformation, I will never again be able to sing professionally. People underestimate the powerful role that muscle conditioning plays in singing. The diaphragm (the muscle, not the contraceptive!) is crucial in range, control, timbre -- just about everything! Ever wonder why so many singers jog and do aerobics? It's not just for vanity. The conditioning MUST be there. Otherwise -- nodes on your vocal cords are practically guaranteed.Anyway, I have Arnold-Chiari malformation (which is why I had to have two brain surgeries), and besides pain, "Chiari" causes degradation of the muscles. They waste away. Exercise can help, but only for a little while. (Pain gets in the way before too very long.) The diaphragm is a large muscle, and it is crucial for proper singing. Mine is not in good condition, I'm afraid. It has turned to mush, along with the rest of my muscles. I was in excellent shape when the Chiari became symptomatic. Between dance, playing bassoon and oboe, and exercising FOR singing and BY singing -- I was mostly muscle. I was able to function long after many people would have turned into mush. You can't stave it off forever, though; for example, I am now mush. Complete mush. I HATE it, but I have the tensile strength of a gnat. My doc just prescribed a nasty scooter for me, and I am putting it off. (Waiting to see my new neurosurgeon, since mine had his license pulled.)I LOVED singing Carpenters' songs, though. I got my butt off the piano bench and sang a Carpenters' song during every "concert" the school chorus gave. (I had a back-up pianist -- Ginger [can't remember her last name -- sorry Ginger!], and she played when I got up to do my solo. Ahhhh -- memories! Soooo, as much as I would like to continue to sing, I don't think it will ever happen. Unless I find a doctor/trainer who thinks that s/he (or one of each) can help me get my voice back? I wish! Posted June 26, 2003 Share Posted June 26, 2003 Female singers....well, I happen to like Olivia and Karen....not so much on the techical aspects or set of pipes, but rather, the uniqueness of their voices. I'm particularly fond of some of the obscure Olivia stuff, such as "Home Ain't Home Anymore", and the songs off "Soul Kiss".Too much "generic" sounding female vocalists as of late. It's not like the 70s/80s when you had distinctive and diverse voices....such as Olivia, Karen, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Kim Carnes, Pat Benatar, Melissa Manchester, etc....Kate Bush is great as she can also write unique music and has quite a range. But she has disappeared from the scene to raise a family. Same with Linda Ronstadt. Laura Branigan also disappeared, but that was due to her husband having cancer for a long time. I do have to hand it to her for getting those Italian hits a second round......most of her songs were hits in Italy by local artists, but then translated into English for her recordings.Early Celine Dion stuff is interesting. It's uptempo, and different than what is offered in the U.S.....and yes, it is in French!Kelly Clarkson really did the right song at the right time. "A Moment Like This".....this song could have easily been done by either Whitney Houston or Bonnie Tyler---both of which whom were long overdue for a hit, and it fit the bill. Same would apply to Ani DiFranco and Victoria Williams---see the names in the magazines but can't place the music."Goldmine" magazine recently interviewed Patti Page. Really good interview. "Tennessee Waltz", one of her biggest hits, almost didn't get released. Nana Mouskouri has kind of a weird niche in the world....major star in Germany, Switzerland, and France....had big hits in Greece and the UK, but not all that well-known anywhere else. I'm not sure if you've heard the album she did with Harry Belafonte, but they do harmonize well!!If I recall correctly, Mike Myers is a big Mouskouri fan.
