LC
Laura, are the tears flowing in Wisconsin? I'm really, really bummed about Brett Favre's reported retirement.... One more season.... We were SO close this year to the Super Bowl...Of all his records (most NFL career TD passes, completions, yards, etc.), the one that is most amazing, almost not even believable, is his iron-man streak: He did not miss a start after taking over as the Packers' QB in 1992... 16 seasons. Unreal....
julesberry
LeRoy Butler was just on the radio. He's says he'll believe it when he hears it from Brett's lips. I'm with him.
angelina
http://sports.espn.go.com/broadband/video/videopage?&brand=null&videoId=3276483&n8pe6c=2 Here is the voicemail left with Chris Mortensen of ESPN by Brett Favre.Although I wasn't a Packer fan...the more I saw Brett Favre...the more I liked him. And his consecutive games played streak (especially at QB) will never be broken. Also overcoming alcohol/substance abuse...and supporting his wife through her illness are his true measures of champion timber.John
julesberry
Well, there you go. He was a joy to watch, win or lose. I wish him all the best.
blackhawkpat
Nobody hates the Packers like I do, being a diehard Chicago Bears fan for the last forty years, and I was certainly never a fan of Favre while he carved up my team (going 18-2 against them at one point), UNTIL I read what he did for his wife while she battled the cancer.I have had the utmost respect for him since and wish him well in his retirement. While I still am not totally convince he is retired, he may not have won a championship this year, but he is a true champion in life. The ultimate respect for him from me was last year in our fantasy football draft, I was actually about to take him on my team before LC stepped up and grabbed him. (Boy, that would have been rough!)I wish Brett and his family nothing but the best!
LC
Very nice, BHPat. Favre was the best.... You know, as a kid, you idolize athletes, but then you grow up you lose that little-kid hero-worship thing, and you tend to just appreciate the great ones. But watching Favre all these years has definitely made me feel like I did as a kid.... It was his enthusiasm for the game that just sucked you in. Sure, he made a ton of money, but you could tell that he'd probably have played for free if he had to. He's one of the last of those "throwback" players who probably would have fit in during the 1920s and 1930s, when NFL "stars" (if you've read about those early days) made peanuts, and had lousy playing conditions and antiquated padding, headgear, and protection.... You just know Favre would have been out there mixin' it up.... And all the things you pointed out are right on, Pat. Favre has been a rock in the face of a lot of personal issues and challenges and tragedies (not just his wife's bout with cancer, but also the sudden death of his dad, and his admission that he was addicted to painkillers....) Anyway, Packer World is awfully blue today.... The new year continues to deliver "bad news on the doorstep."
hollies65
I bet he plays this year. He proved last year he could still do it.Iknow he was pissed the Packers did not make a bigger push for Randy Moss.
Tiggsherby
I think he plays another year too....
LC
I hope you guys are right, H-65 and Harry.
BeatleJay
You're right LC, he is definitely a throwback player. The guy is just damn tough, and I admire his guts. I absolutely hate the Packers. Being a Vikings fan since '72, it's my duty. But I respect no other player more than I do Brett Favre. Sorry LC, I know you will miss the guy. It's been a pleasure to watch him play.I was going to say "H-65 bingo!" But I disagree, I think he means it, and he's done.
Laura
I'm crying too, LC. My husband (the Bears fan) thinks he's going to play again, but maybe doesn't want to do training camp like some other players. But my gut feeling by watching the 2 colder games this year (at Chicago and the Giants playoff game) is that he seemed like the cold made it harder for him to play. Maybe if he was able to play for a team in warm weather, he might consider another year. He just kind of looked stiff and slow. He may reconsider once he gets closer to the season, but I think he's done.

LC
Well, we knew this day was coming (your avatar describes how I've felt about it, Laura), but it doesn't make it any easier.... I guess a lot of the sadness, if you're a diehard Packer fan, is thinking about all the years we've LOVED having him as our QB. I mean, he took over in 1992! Where were you in 1992? For me, it was two states, a wife, and two kids ago. I was a "pup" in my early 30s. And I was bummed to see the NFL highlight one Sunday showing that Don Majkowski had been injured seriously and left the game. Ouch. Would the Packers ever win again? All I knew of Favre was his name on the depth chart.... And then, the next highlight: his last-minute TD pass beat the Bengals! And he never sat down again.... Watch this 2-minute clip about Favre's entry into Packer hearts (the bit about holding the extra point snap is hilarious): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hbt6jUtzVI0 "If you've ever wondered what it looks like when a legend is born, this is pretty much it." darlene
Herman loves Brett Favre too. He said he's mentally tired. We all knew it would happen one day, and he's really terrific, but he's thinking of his life beyond the sport. He will be missed! --Darlene
Laura
That is a blast. I didn't remember him holding the extra point, but I do remember the game and Magic coming out injured. There will never be another one like him!
wallytosa
Yes, we are sad here in Wisconsin. I've been lucky to see him play many times in both Lambeau Field and the old County Stadium, including the last game ever in Milwaukee where he dove into the right corner of the end zone against the Falcons for the winning score and sent the Packers into the playoffs. What memories. But the one that will always be the most memoralable is that Monday Night game in Oakland after his father passed away. I'm one of the few who was not a fan of the Majik Man for some reason, it was so long ago I don't even remember why, so I was glad when Favre took over. What a ride...he's been the Packer's starter since 1992! Wow. That's 3 years before my 13 year old son was born. Unbelieavable.May Brett be happy as he rides off into the sunset on his lawn mower. We'll miss ya buddy.
Billy
I was at Brett's first start vs Pittsburgh in 92 -- after that I went to Lambeau another 10 times was so thankful to see Brett play. If it is time to move on, what a great career! I got to admit, it does get a little tiresome every year of hearing the retirement talk -- if this is truly it, i hope he doesn't make the come back, a la Reggie White, in another uniform. Go out as a Packer, go to the Hall of Fame, it's been a blast. I guess it's time to see what Aaron Rodgers can do.
