There is some oil relief legislation in the pipeline, but as long as the houses are pretty much equal, not much will happen of any note, esp with the veto power at the top, and the focus on the 2008 elections. And yeah the conspiracy was allowing these companies to reform the monopolies that the breakups of big oil in the early 1900s were about. Exxon/Mobil merger meant the closing of hundreds of stations deemed redundant, and prices in those areas where there was competition are now rising daily. All that antitrust legislation was torn apart in 7 years. There has not been a refinery built in 31 years in the USA. Imagine that. The last new refinery was built at the same time Eric's first solo lp was released, 1976. Meanwhile, the population has exploded. In recent interviews this past week, the oil companies have flat out said they have no intention of building any new refineries. That's BS. They are making the greatest profits in their history, and have no plans to spend one dime to ease this situation. Oil prices have actually dropped $10 a barrel in the past week, but gas prices here went up .15 a gallon.

I live in a town of a little over 700 people. We were warned last night that if wanted gas at $2.99 a gallon we should do it NOW....today the price of regular gas went to $3.23 a gallon!! Conspriacy? Possibly. Blatantly ripping people off....YEAH!! I know that every year since the war has started, and just as school lets out for summer, gas prices spike. Middle class working folks are taking a beating!!

Looks like there may be some real help on the way.

Or more to the point, Big Oil may have already screwed themselves but they don't know it yet.

Increased prices making alternatives look better.

Big fleets are taking alternatives more serious.

See this UPS link: http://community.ups.com/environment/fuels.html

Also heard that municipal bus lines are going for this. Biodiesel is coming along too:

http://www.imperiumrenewables.com/

Market forces & innovation will slowly correct this situation. If most all the fleets in the country go for alternate fuels then demand for usual fuels will drop and so will the prices.

More usage and distribution of new fuels will

cause those prices to drop too which could spell the death knell for big oil as we know it. How do you like us now Middle East!! In a weird way big oil may be doing us a favor!!

Jeez, I'm supposed to be off the board for a while. My boss (me) told me that my company has a ton going on and I have to prioritize my time...but I wanted to chime in here one more time.

The break-up of the oil trust(s) in the early 1900s was the break-up of just one company that completely dominated the industry, Rockefeller's Standard Oil. Today, after some consolidation in the industry, there are still many oil companies/gas retailers. Just drive down a busy commercial boulevard and count them. The situations are incomparable, IMHO.

Consolidation can be a good thing. Efficiencies are created which result in lower costs and less pressure on prices to consumers. Efficacies are created which result in better product for the consumer. The challenge for our government is trying to find that point on the consolidation universe where economic output/economic liberty/economic fairness are opitimized as a group. It's my sense that it's being responsible here. The recent consolidation referred to above was going on in the 1990s under President Clinton and as well under President Bush...so blame (or more likely credit) can't be attributed to one administration.

Lastly, capitalism has had its ugly, even evil episodes. And there has been profiteering in times of crisis (see Harry Truman's great work as Senator). But let's keep some perspective. Capitalism/big business has been the crux of getting us through many times of crisis: WWI, WWII, The Marshall Plan. The big evil medical industry and its big evil pharmaceutical companies have been instrumental in making us the healthiest generation that has lived on the planet. Who is responsible for the new cutting edge robotic surgery for prostate cancer? AIDS drugs that have prolonged a quality life for AIDS sufferers?, the MRI diagnostic tool?, Viagra etc etc etc etc.. ?

I know there is corruption in government and industry in the U.S. (though in relative terms it's small compared to the human experience throughout history). And healthy skepticism is a good thing. What bothers me is knee jerk reactions when things go wrong, when frustration set in: irrational attacks against those with power, against those that are more successful than us, against the productive, against the "rich" who have more money than us, against our country that on balance, is the greatest political entity in the world's history (IMHO) and which many have worked and worked and died to make it what it is.

A person busts his butt to be successful and what can he/she look forward to? Politicians, the press, some of the jealous masses.. spewing venum his/her way...assuming he's made it on the backs of the little guy...etc etc.

I think this is an unhealthy mindset.

Not really....

No intelliegent person will lump the greedy evil corporate bastards (Enron) in with those who are genuine decent and upstanding (Bill Gates).

With capatilism, the people must keep a close eye on the those in power, because money can be the root of a lot of evil... (hello, record companies)

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that those profiting the most could do a little bit better at giving back... unless you think owning mansions on every continent is a vital necessity before the common good (needs) of your workers...

Just a point.... Not really what this thread is about But... the quote should be if you want to be accurate is "The LOVE of money is the root of all evil".

If that's what drives you.. (the LOVE of money).. then you will do anything to gain more whether you need it or not. And that is when people trample over people irrespective of the results and they (the LOVERS) won't even be aware of what pain they are causing others.

Muzza cool

A little off subject but indulge me please...

IMHO, Hugo Chavez, Venezuela's' president, is a bad guy....he's a wannabe (if not already) autocrat, and likely worse..

Citgo is the Venezualan national oil company. I haven't bought Citgo gasoline in some years.

I'd ask those so inclined, to consider doing the same.
