KevG, Jay "Thunder Island" Ferguson. Great song!!!

And for all you Pop music purists out there, check out Andrew Gold. Fabulously underrated and probably best-known for two songs: "Lonely Boy" and "Thank You For Being A Friend", although he wa also the voice / songwriter behind the theme song for the tv series "Mad About You."

Marvin--Good choice with Andrew Gold. I actually like his first album more. "That's Why I Love You" is my favorite song of his. The middle eight of that song is as fine as I have heard. Had a chance to see him open for Linda Ronstat at the Universal Amphitheater in the early 70's (before they put the roof on and when you could still get good seats). His set was very tight. Then Linda walked out on stage with that Boy Scout uniform (which she had to lie about to get) and they were her band for the rest of the night. I'm not sure I would put Andrew Gold with the list of underrated vocalists, though. I think his voice is pretty weak and thin, not able to really interpret the material as deeply as it deserves. I never said that Andrew was underrated as a vocalist (at least I don't think I did), I said he was underrated as an artist. He's solid on a number of instruments. Check out his stuff with Graham Gouldman (of 10CC) under the name "WAX." With the track record that the two of them have, you knew WAX was going to be good. Their first album, is their best.

Yeah, Jay Ferguson had another great song, called "Shakedown Cruise"....in fact works well played right after(or before) Joe Jackson's "Is She Going out With Him" or Van Halen's "Dance the Night Away"......that's a cool triple-shot, if I were DJing a show tonight.......the song would also work well before or after a Jimmy Buffet tune, as well.

Believe it or not, I really enjoyed a tape by this band called Scruffy the Cat, who is from Minneapolis. Sara Brenner, the "female Billy Joel" is great, too.

Jay Ferguson had one more song called "White Noise" with Joe Walsh on guitar peaking at # 34 (Billboard Mainstream Rock Track Charts) back in April of 1982 but the album "White Noise" peaked at # 178 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Charts back in April of 1982. I saw Jay perform the song "Tonight" (Fallin' For Ya') on the TV series Solid Gold that same year. Matt

Yes, and I think Jay was also in "Jo Jo Gunne" with Joe Vitale - the drummer on "Thunder" and "Shakedown." I don't have my "Billboard" Facts Book handy (but I'm sure Matt has his by his side!) so I can't confirm any of this. Jay also played on Joe Walsh's "..But Seriously Folks" album. As to what Jay is doing now, another one of life's mysteries.

Jo Jo Gunne was a Los Angeles-based rock quartet: Jay Ferguson (keyboards), brothers Matthew (guitar) & Mark (bass) Andes & Curly Smith (drums). Both Ferguson & Mark Andes had been in Spirit. By 1973, Jimmie Randall had replaced Mark Andes. By 1974, John Staehely had replaced Matthew Andes. Group named after the 1958 Chuck Berry hit. Mark Andes was later with Firefall & Heart. Matt

I read in: www.allmusic.com that Jay Ferguson has worked on movie soundtracks including The Terminator, Double Dragon, Nightmare On Elm Street 5 & the UPN television series Viper among many others & remained active into the new millennium. By the way, Jo Jo Gunne Debut & Bite Down Hard are available on Collectors' Choice Music as well as Jay's Thunder Island. Matt

Matt, thanks for the info.....forgot all about Jo Jo Gunne........and didn't realize that Spirit's recordings charted as high as they did......

If I recall correctly, Ed Cassidy(I think that's his name), who drummed for Spirit, was about 50 years old at the time "I Got a Line on You Was Relased", making him the oldest drummer in rock.....

As for Randy California, I forget what his real last name was. Interestingly enough, the name came from none other than Jimi Hendrix, who knew several Randys that played guitar and refered to him as "California" so the name stuck.

Joe Vitale and Joe Vitale Jr. have collaborated on a "drum sample" CD from Wisconsin's Sonic Foundry. This is called "Junkyard Rhythms" using unique percussion effects. (Sonic Foundry, incidentally, also recently released a CD of Mick Fleetwood's playing).

Have not heard either of the CD's yet, however.
