marvin
Sometimes that's okay, Marvin. Go ahead, give it your best shot. Thanks Daisy. I'll step up to the plate and give it my best shot. Mind you I've figured out over the years that Tommy and I don't see eye-to-eye on much music other than the 'berries and possibly Herman's Hermits. Daisy McLintock
I understand about differences in music, Marvin. I guess the question always depends upon the taste of the person asking. So what you're saying is that if you posted some CD's he'll just knock them off, squarely because his taste is different than yours. Well he asked for everyone's favorites (opinions). I know he asked for the best CD's, but then in his actual post he asked for everybody's favorites. So - maybe there'll be something in there that he'll like afterall. JohnO
Eli "Paperboy" Reed & The True Loves - Roll With You - my pick as best soul album of '08;Magic Christian - Evolver - Power-pop super group's 2nd release - VERY limited edition;Alejandro Escovedo - Real Animal - His best ever, over a long career;Hank Williams - The Unreleased Recordings (from the early 50s but previously unreleased) - perhaps the most important C&W release of the past 20-25 years;Ginger - Market Harbour - Wildhearts' frontman in a mellow mood;Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! - best Bad Seeds in ages;Bob Dylan - Tell Tale Signs (Bootleg Series, Vol. 8 - treasure trove of outtakes, alternate versions);Roky Erickson & The Explosives - Halloween, Live 1979-1981 (again, release of previously unavailable material)- Not as good as Roky is live now, but it'll do until he records againAdd to this list from above, and this'll get WAY over 10 in total......Sparks - Exotic Creatures of the Deep - Perhaps their best ever; their music is like noboby else's;Pete Best Band - Hayman's Green - shockingly, very Beatles-influenced!;Graham Day & The Gaolers - Triple Distilled - best garage band in the UK?;The Damned - So Who's Paranoid? - first release in 7 years, and worth the wait;Drumbo - City Of Refuge - John "Drumbo" French was Captain Beefheart's musical arranger during his heyday; and it's obvious from this CD that his contributions were significant - not for everybody, certainly not on this board!Explorers Club - Freedom Wind - excellent Brian/Beach Boys-influenced pop;The Hold Steady - Stay Positive - Best '08 E-Street Band release....only with a more verbose Bruce (think "Greetings From..." or "Wild, Innocent") with an even worse singing voice;Last Shadow Puppets - Age of Understatement - Arctic Monkeys singer pulls a Scott Walker, only before SW went totally haywire;Chris Wilson - Second Life - Ex-Flamin' Groovies singer's first release in about 15 years - a cross between early Graham Parker and Dylan circa '66;Lucinda Williams - Little Honey - excellent comeback; MGMT - Oracular Spectacular - reminds me of Prince, Sparks, The Electric Prunes in different places - most of it very catchy pop music; Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound - On second thought, maybe this was the best '08 E-Street Band release - think Bruce weaned on fast '70s punk rock;Hank Williams III - Damn Right, Rebel Proud - featuring the best pickers Nashville has to offer, this will never get played on Country radio.Other noteworthy reissues in '08:Dennis Wilson - Pacififc Ocean BlueBlue Ash - No More, No LessArtful Dodger - Honor Among ThievesThe Move - Anthology box setThe Nerves - One Way TicketOtis Redding -Otis Blue deluxe editionOtis Redding - Live in London & ParisPorter Wagoner - Cold Hard Facts of Life (6 CD set)
