Unfortunately the economy tanked and that was beyond their control. A lot of people like to say that the Yankees overspend. I'll concede that they spend a lot of money on payroll. However, I pose to you this;The Yankees pay into the "luxury tax" system. Last season they paid $26.8 million into the luxury tax pool. Now that money is supposed to help small market teams. Yet there's no rule in place that says those teams have to spend that money. If those small market teams don't do anything with the money who's at fault? You have a team like the Royals and the Kaufmans who say "you know what, I make good money on parking, concessions, I have a good cable contract, I get 35,000 a night, I do well on in game advertising. Why should I raise payroll and try to win a World Series when I can finish in fourth and make a profit?". How is that fair to the Yankees, Mets, Braves and even the Red Sox that a team like the Royals or the Padres gets to line their pockets with money that's intended to help them compete?Furthermore, you have a team like the Cubs who manages to put together a token run once a decade and teases their fans with the pipe dream of a championship and then fall apart because they only did a half ass job putting the team together? The Cubs are a big market team. Why aren't they vilified for their utter incompetence? The Yankees are running the team like a BUSINESS. If half the teams in the league ran it like a business maybe they'd be in contention. You can't have it both ways. The Red Sox are a big market team with a huge payroll. Why isn't there equal rancor for them? Or the Braves, Mets, Dodgers. All I ever hear is "it's the Yankees fault". Well it's more than abundantly clear that there's a double standard and the Yankees are an easy scapegoat. That "bed" is lined with 26 world championships. I'm thinking they are sleeping pretty well. One of my best friends was born and raised in NY and he is a diehard Yankee fan, so it's just fun to pick on the team. I don't begrudge them for making the money they do. They were then taken to one of the new stadium's primo corporate boxes to watch the Yanks lose 14 to whatever. Well, it didn't suck as much being in the lap of luxury - he said the new stadium was spectacular.And if you can't rag on each other's sports teams, you take out half the fun of being a fan in the first place!!! Posted April 24, 2009 Share Posted April 24, 2009 While on the subject....I believe someone bought Bernie Madoff's block of Mets season tickets(which are next to home plate), due to the "bankruptcy" sale....and are selling them at deeply discounted prices..Yes, Harlock, you are right on the money. Winning isn't the only thing....it's making money....And, for some teams.....it's the Yankee series that puts their profits over the top, as peopleare out their to root AGAINST them. Not just in Boston, the natural rivalry, of course....but teams like the Mariners and the A's have fans that especially, vocally, dislike the Yanks. More people at the games at the series...so more ticket sales...and more money spent at the food and other concession stands. Win or lose, the stadiums in those cities make book...
