Lew Bundles
I'm sorry Marv...This is not personal with you guys...I just hate creeps that try to tell me how to vote/think...Sing your songs and shut up...I hope this failure bothers him for the rest of his life... Kirk
I'd give him a B+. I'm not a huge Bruce fan- If he was off key, I'd call him on it. He was not off key. The one thing I thought could have been better was the production on Born To Run. They could have used the Overdubs, for sure! It was a bit watered down. I'm sure it's a tough tune to do live and make it sound like the studio version. Good job overall by Bruce!
Matthew C. Clark
In case you missed it, Bruce performed "Tenth Avenue Freeze Out", "Born To Run", "Working On A Dream" & "Glory Days". Matt
Lew Bundles
Go back and listen to the first couple of songs...He has the most unchallenging songs to sing and he was off key...BOSS = AROD...The biggest show of his life and he came up lame...Beautiful...Tell me how to think and vote again?...Choker... seattlesteve
I don't belong on this thread anymore.. I happened to think Bruce and the E were very good... told my kids who liked it.. that's real music and attitude.. on key is easy compared to the vibe Bruce has.. you get it or you don't...Lew.. I guess go back and take a video of the pig tail girl with perfect pitch in band camp.. she would never hang with John, Paul, George, Elton, Brian, Billy, or Eric.. Tony Cartmill
But the real mystery is:Was the audience blonde with the big fake boobs that the camera kept swarming back to, a publicity plant, or is the cameraman just not gettin' any at home?
Lew Bundles
All seven of those guys you mentioned Steve can sing better with electrical tape around their mouths than that nonsense from the "Boss"...Sounded like karaoke night... Danny S.
To me, He sounded more "out of breath", than off key.
LC
Here you go, Lew. This Yahoo guy totally rips Springsteen, for everything: http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/listoft...the-super-bowl/ I don't know this blogger from Adam, so I don't put much stock in his comments -- especially his criticism of the word "speedball" in the original "Glory Days" (I always LOVED that word as he used it, and thought it made perfect sense). I get the feeling that he does lists of 10 things, so he had to reach for his criticisms....What's maybe more interesting than this goofball writer's opinions is the flurry of comments from readers. Some loved, some hated Bruce. Nobody seems to be in the middle! He's taken a few "sold out" comments, like this one: "I was HORRIFIED and have been a fan since the early 80's...that was the height of pathetic...$Working$ $On$ $A$ $Dream$ sponsored by NFL + WALMART....what happened to Bruce???"Again, I'm a Bruce fan, and I liked his 12-minute gig, so I tend to look at this music blogger as a blowhard panning for reader comments... and I'm personally not going to add mine to his thread. But I thought I'd share with ya'll....

hollies65
One point...this part about singing for the working man, etc and what a phoney Springsteen is to be writing and singing such lyrics; I'm not a big Bruce fan, but Springsteen, while now very wealthy, was not raised in a wealthy household. His parents were lower middle class, and he [ or anyone raised in a household where finances were an issue] knows where those lyrics are coming from. Those early years stay with you, and shapes who you are.

His parents were lower middle class, and he [ or anyone raised in a household where finances were an issue] knows where those lyrics are coming from. Those early years stay with you, and shapes who you are. Good point Steve. In a recent interview, Bruce was asked how he can relate to the 'common man' when he now lives in the proverbial 'mansion on the hill.' His reply was that you NEVER forget your upbringing, good or bad. His was, as you say, lower middle class and it is rooted in him. The fact that he has stayed with the same group of guys, some since he's known since high school, says a lot about what he considers important, the values of friendship.I have a question for Rob and Lew: You claim you don't like Springsteen preaching, and I know that you both love the Beatles and McCartney. So, why is it ok for them to preach in songs like "Revolution", and "Too Many People" or McCartney telling you that eating meat is wrong? James
I think Eric and Anna said it best on page 2.. I can't add much. Except if a performance is rated on how it lifts you, or gives you a positive charge, then Bruce & the E Street Band get an A+ from this boy.His music will go down in history as pure Americana, IMHO. Guest Fresh
Aside from the personal remarks on Springsteen's performance, the Dolby Digital 5.1 was a little disappointing.I thought the broadcast would have had perfectly mixed and balanced sound, but it was fair at best. The vocals were buried under the music. The sound for the rest of the SuperBowl was excellent.Anybody else notice? Anna R
I really don't understand why people will go out of their way to spend their energy on negativity, belittling and criticism. It is such a waste of time. Why not focus your energy on something positive? What you put out there in the world- you get back! Here is a quote for the day:All that we are is the result of what we have thought. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him. If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him. ~Buddha

Lew Bundles
I have a question for Rob and Lew: You claim you don't like Springsteen preaching, and I know that you both love the Beatles and McCartney. So, why is it ok for them to preach in songs like "Revolution", and "Too Many People" or McCartney telling you that eating meat is wrong? [/QB]First of all Marv...Song lyrics mean nothing in a song... If lyrics were so important, how did an act like The Beatles get so popular in foreign countries...The people couldnt even understand the damn words...Cheap Trick and even Eric are huge in Japan and no one could understand a single lyric...Point #2...If lyrics were so important, why is Beethoven considered the best songwriter of all time...THERE'S NO LYRICS...Wouldnt he have written some if they were so important?Point #3...Mccartney goes on Live Aid and closes the show with "Let It Be" which is in DIRECT CONTRAST to the idea of "Live Aid" and getting involved...No on even brings up the fact that this song was totally inappropriate, lyricwise...Point #4...Why do philharmonics play popular songs and never worry about anybody singing or reciting the words?...Point #4...Why does a guy like Eric, who is an accomplished songwriter love the song "TURN TURN TURN so much when it uses passages from the Bible as its lyrics and he dosent even believe in God...How important can the lyrics be?...Point #5...How can lyrics be important when people are requesting salsa and meringue at parties and they dont even know what the hell is being said in the songs...Point #6...Why is opera considered such a cultural art standard, people flock to go see an opera and they CANT UNDERSTAND A DAMN THING THAT ANYBODY IS SINGING...THE LYRICS MEAN NOTHING...\Point #7...Try to name more than a handful of spoken word songs that have become big sellers...Cant do it, huh...But there sure are a lot of instrumentals that were/are big...I dont care what the words to "Revolution" or "Too Many People " are...Lyrics are basically irrelevant in a song...As far as Mccartney preaching about meat...He's not a phony about it...He dosent talk about abstaining from meat and then goes out and has a pastrami sub...Unlike the "phony Mr. Common Man" in the mansion...If Derek Jeter , during a baseball game, stopped, grabbed the mic and started to tell you how to vote, you'd tell him to go **** in his helmet...Or, if you went to a Broadway play and the lead actor stops and starts to tell you how to think, you'd probably ask for a refund...But, you dont have a problem with this phony Mr. Moralist( who dumped his wife and probably kids for someone else) stopping during his shows and telling you how to vote...My father dosent even that audacity ...But this phony thinks he has a right to do it...Preaching to me is one thing as long as your convictions are sincere...Its his phoniness that I cant stand...Therefore, I dont care what the words to "Revolution", Too Many People" are...ITS THE MUSIC THAT COUNTS...THE LYRICS ARE MEANINGLESS... marvin
Lew as I said on the phone, how can you even begin to offer a non-biased opinion when you hate Springsteen and his music? Not possible. I still say that a part of you likes Bruce, or you wouldn't have stuck through the entire 13 min performance - one that apparently "sucked." Eric Carmen
Hey,I never said I don't believe in God! I simply have some questions about what kind of a God he/she/it is, and how much personal involvement God has in our daily life, here on our tiny little speck of spinning dirt, out in the boondocks of the Universe.I'd love to believe God exists. I'm just looking for some solid evidence that goes beyond Iron Age books written by men who had never looked through a microscope or a telescope. TOMMY TUNES
I am very interested in Eric's opinion of Bruce's performance. As a professional musician/artist, and a damned good one at that, he would have an insight that we wouldn't.
seattlesteve
Ask the guy that wrote Boats, or even Love Is All That Matters and the angst over the syallbles and syncopation, let alone the message, if the lyrics matter.. they do.
