Guest
In another post, AustinBerries (a known liberal trouble maker) started a new topic: "Minnesota and Georgia......." AB made a comment about "Rabid Rush"... and I jumped in to say that Rabid Rush and Sean Hannity will have to get new jobs if broadcast rules are changed. Mr Hollies (that would be 65) and I had a short unproductive exchange... my intention was to have a dialog about what Talk Radio is... and isn't. How Radio has responsibilities and obligations to their local audiences and people actually rely on the broadcast media to get their news and information. I know many were thrilled when Reagan threw out the Fairness Doctrine... Others were concerned about the principle reasons Broadcast exists in the community. We're not talking about TV here... Radio fills a very special niche and has a long history of serving the public.Radio is near and dear to me, as I have worked in the industry and been part of the energy. I think, after a long run of "Conservative Talk Radio" the rules are about to change. Oh Rush and Sean will survive... but with new rules. Just my opinion based on inside industry information

hollies65
Radio stations exist to make money. Those that don't...see my above post. You hoping the Fairness Doctrine makes a return, doesn't mean it will.
Guest Fresh
It seems that the notion of "freedom of speech" continues to diminish with the liberalization of America.Remember Thomas Jefferson??? It was he that stated,"I may not agree with what you say,but I will defend to the death your right to say it".If people don't like what certain radio talk-show hosts have to say, then the answer is very simple...DON'T LISTEN!!! I personally dislike rap and hip-hop music, and I would never waste my time listening to it or supporting it through CD purchases. However,I would never force the artists to stop producing it.Nor would I attempt to discourage anyone else from listening to it.Very simple. What are these liberals so afraid of??? Guest Fresh
Also,I seem to recall that Al Franken attempted to run an anti-conservative radio talk-show several years ago and it bombed miserably.Let the people decide what they want to listen to.Isn't that really what "fairness" means? No one is guaranteed an audience, only those that truly merit it can have millions of listeners every week. austinberries
LV, thank you for the, eh, compliment..like i mentioned in my other post, it's an interesting phenomena that right-wing radio soars, while left-wing radio sputters, but i doubt very seriously that 'the rules are about to change'. right-wingers did a very effective job of getting their 'voice' more prominently heard & rep'ed on NPR a few years ago, & you still hear it loud & clear in their broadcasts (tho' at not near the decibel level as windbags like Rush, obviously)now, we could take up the topic of why right-wing radio soars while left-wing radio sputters... austinberries
fresh, i thought you were one of the ones who had my back on the political debate posts - it must've been another "____rasperry" member, cuz they wouldn't have written ""freedom of speech continues to diminish with the liberalization of America". that's an odd notion there, pallie.. Guest
AB,My husband, who is a talk radio host who was most popular in the 80s, has a theory. He believes Air America failed because it wasn't willing to raise the bar on conservative talk radio. In other words, Air America wasn't absurd enough!I really believe radio is too powerful to play games with politics, and should avoid any overbearing ploys by either party.Broadcasting on radio is a privilege - not a right - and this is why all radio stations must hold a "Privileged License" to operate. This has nothing to do with Freedom of Speech, as the rules are different on licensed air ways.Sean Hannity is currently doing two things that breech the good auspices of broadcasting on radio:1. His show has partnered with the Heritage Foundation to get more people to become Conservatives and join the Heritage Foundation. There is a tax deductible fee to join the HF2. His show is running a radio spot that features Ed Meece discussing erronous information about the Fairness Doctrine and the Freedom of Speech amendmentI really believe today's talk radio (political rantings) is in for some changes... I know it will be difficult for hard core conservatives - who have taken advantage of the rules of broadcasting - to accept. While Rush & Sean will no doubt stick around... they may have to come to terms with whatever new rules are put into place down the road. hollies65
Ah Hahahahahaha! Exposed! Good luck...Another disgruntled liberal who can't stand that conservatives rule radio. Heh. Guest
Sorry about that AB... I don't like bringing up Ed Meese either, but the radio spot he's doing really troubles me. I can't seem to find the audio on the internet, but I know it's there somewhere. Now about my husband being a windbag... not true. He's a very talented guy and mainly talks about automobiles and technology.... he's a professional, and very entertaining. None of this political stuff. His show was syndicated from Detroit thoughout the 80s. It was actually the first radio show about cars and the car business in the US. He's quite a guy... even used to play bass in his hometown of Philly. Went to school with Stanley Clarke... they were in the same music class! My husband gave up considering becoming a musician when he heard Stanley play!!!

Tony Cartmill
I would welcome some sort of revised "Fairness Doctrine" as long as they apply it to Lib-controlled TV news and comment as well... including what stories will actually be aired, and what will be buried...And orgs like the ACLU, Media Matters and Center for American Progress are exposed for the biased "taxable" fronts for Socialist Revolution, that they are. That way, Alot of lawyers on BOTH SIDES will get rich, and media companies all over, will go bankrupt. On second thought

He spends half an hour on forplay, but mostly staring at himself naked in the mirror chanting, "I am such a great journalist!"

Tony Cartmill
Rush ain't always right. I wanted to slap him the other day, when he's saying that it's nobody's business how much a CEO makes in bonuses, because it won't change the contract or pension of his workers...Excuse me Mr. Rushbo, you conveniently don't mention that it might be OUR BUSINESS when that same CEO is begging for a taxpayer bailout of his company, which he helped run into the ground, and that his worker's contracts and pensions might go to $0 if the company goes under, and he still gets his multi-million-dollar bonus or buyout fee!IT IS SOMEBODY'S BUSINESS TO TRY AND CONTROL CORRUPTION, GREED AND PROFITING FROM YOUR OWN COMPANY GOING UNDER!No wonder the Socialists are gaining power...Nobody has a business conscience anymore, so that free-market capitalism can stop eating it's own... Guest
I told Mr. Hollies in another thread that Rush is a persona...a combination of what he wants his audience to hear, and what Craig Kitchen tells him to do.if he was all that, why did his TV show fail in such a big way and why didn't Fox pick him up? He's not real folks... he's a former DJ (no offense to all the great DJs out there) who backed into something and has had a FREE RIDE for the past 20 + years. He's turned out to be a decent entertainer and producer... and he sets his audiences up like a great producer will set up his/her show. He really learned that over time.Does anyone remember Morton Downey Jr. on television? Same story through not as talented as Rush.
