Kirk
LC, that's no worse than the one about Prince Charles and Lady Diane naming there first son Up.That would have made the royal family: Up, Chuck, and Di

Ecstasy
My adopted name became Quan. My married name is Dolan and is staying that way! LOLI have a grandson, Ty, but that doesn't work in this case, does it?My family is a walking, talking UN! My subsequent siblings are 1/2 Chinese and 1/2 German. One brother looks Chinese (his wife is Puerto Rican and their boys are an interesting blend.) My other brother and sister, something about the Amer-Asian blend came out looking hispanic (they look Puerto Rican like our sister-in-law!) My sister's husband is Polish (when their first daughter was born she had Cary's dark, almond-shaped eyes... and blonde curls!) ROFLOL Their other girls are just as exotic. Then we (John is pure Irish) brought Brian and Annie into the mix and added African-American! We don't take any of this racial/cultural stuff too seriously other than to say this is the gift that YOU bring to this family! To think of trying to mix all of these names and cultures would be hysterical!

Ecstasy
Whenever someone would call out "Quan" they were expecting someone who looked like my aunt --- long, shiny black hair with dark almond eyes. That wouldn't have worked either. Her husband is Jewish so her last name is Schneller and she wouldn't be what they expected either! Wendy-Ann
My adopted name became Quan. My married name is Dolan and is staying that way! LOLI was born with the "Ellis Island" last name of ANTONITIS...I changed it to ANTANAITIS when I was 22. It was sitting in Fashion Island in Newport Beach, after clothes shopping with my friends when I decided I would never give up my birth name. I then decided why not change it to the correct Lithuanian spelling....so I did. Most of my highly rational decisions happen in obscure places. Anyway...it took me long enough to learn to spell Antanaitis...I wasn't giving it up! WORD!

Guest
i'm gonna haer about this, but i think when a couple marries, the woman should take her husbands name. Same for gays, and there is nothing wrong with that....

Same for gays, and there is nothing wrong with that.... And peanut, you have a right to that opinion, so if you ever marry (again)...go for it. I think a woman should choose what name she wants to be known by and so should a man. My last name is just as important as a man's.
Guest
Let's do a survey, Wen. What do you guys think?
Wendy-Ann
Let's do a survey, Wen. What do you guys think? Sure...and then let's do a survey of the women of the Lucy Stone Society about this subject.peanut, my under the weather gal...as I've said, I'm all for people to choose what they want to be called. As long as I have my last name, I'm a happy camper. If you want to hold the last name of a guy you're marrying, I'll be the first to "add his inital to your monogram!" (who doesn't love the song: Someone To Watch Over Me?)
Laura
My name would be Newson or Erickman- my maiden name was Newman and my married name is Erickson. Pretty boring, actually.

Ecstasy
I remember one of our former caseworkers combined and hyphenated their names --- hers-his. It was an incredibly long name and as I recall he used to frequently go by just his own last name for court because it was simpler (they don't play games with those complicated names there.)Our Brian's birth name was hideous. We changed it and started calling him Brian (even the agency did it was so bad) long before his adoption went through! Corcanz Troup --- I kid you not. There was no way any of us were going through life with Corcanz Dolan under any circumstances! (He still shudders on the rare ocasion that name is mentioned.) He's now Brian Patrick Dolan. Annie's was a challenge. She arrived on our doorstep with paperwork in the name of Annie Mae Baskins (mom's name) but after 5 yrs of that name they suddenly switched. It was right before her adoption and all of the sudden the paperwork started saying Annie Mae Barnes. We all said, "Who the heck is Annie Mae Barnes?" It turns out they were now using her father's name. Why? We have no idea. She's now Carianna May Dolan until she decides if she wants to change it someday. You have no idea what we went through to adopt her and give her that name!!!
Ecstasy
Oh, and DCFS in their infinite wisdom never did figure out the name thing! When her brother, Vincent, recently contacted her (with the help of his caseworker) the envelope was addressed to her as Baskins and his signature said Barnes. They STILL didn't have records on who these kids were or had become. She's been Dolan for 11 yrs! She'll be married 20 yrs, take her husband's name, and still the records will never know whether to call her Baskins, Barnes, Dolan, or her married name! I'ts a good thing she's not schizophrenic! Wendy-Ann
Geesh Kathy Lee, what a mess! But good for you for adopting!!!!! One of my niece's is adopted. Now the good news is: She IS a Dolan and goes by that no matter what anyone says. And upon marriage if she opts to retain her name and not take her husband’s, she will still be a Dolan no matter how many people tell her she is now Mrs. So and So – trust me on that one. (lol)As for hyphenated names, courts, etc can no longer ignore them, they are legal names. My first name is Wendy-Ann and not once in any legal matter did they take the hyphen out and just call me Wendy. The same should go for last names. There are plenty of cultures and people who hyphenate and it should be respected.
Ecstasy
No, I'm sorry if I was unclear, Wendy. what I meant is that juvenile court moves incredibly fast (you might be before the judge for 2 minutes or less.) Once you're done and they're having you sign paperwork you have to move fast and sometimes he'd just use his own name to save time since both of their names were long and hyphenated it's even longer! LOL Wendy, our three older children are biological. After a series of miscarriages we decided to go into foster care and adoption. Trust me, you could call Annie and Laura (our other daughter who took her husband's name) anything and you'd definitely know they were Dolans!
