Tim From Wisconsin
I plan on seeing King Kong sometime in the next week, but I was wondering if anyone saw it on opening night. I'd love to know how it is - It looks great!Tim
Rich From PA
Hate to be a wet blanket, but I saw the movie yesterday and I was bored stiff. I left the theatre thinking "There's 3 hours of my life I'll never get back."But that's just one man's opinion.Rich
CubbiefanMike
Ebert gave it 4 stars.. I am not normally into hollywoods remakes but this is a movie that was due to be updated ignoring the bad scripts of the 1970's... it looks like a good movie. This was directed by the same guy that did the Lord Of the Rings movies.
SugarBabi7
Haven't seen the movie yet either. A good rule of thumb used to be if Ebert hated it, it would be a hit. He once panned the original Star Wars. He may be right or wrong about Kong, I guess it's sometimes a matter of personal taste. I hated the Beau Bridges and Jessica Lange version, but other people thought it was great. I think this one may be pretty good with all the effects. Looking forward to seeing it too. Kirk
Didn't see King Kong tonight, but just got back from Chronicles of Narnia at the El Capitan in Hollywood. Good movie to see on the big screen. The El Capitan is a grand old theater, they have one of the 5 Wurlitzer pipe organs made for the silent movies in the '20's. They also had set pieces from the movie, even made it snow inside (and outside) the theater. Kirk.
raspberrywine
I never thought it was all that a great a storyline to waste the hours: Wow, big monkey comes to town and falls in love with some blonde chick in a chifon dress whose ascared of heights but insists on hanging out the window of the Empire State Building. Shes in love with some other guy but really digs this big monkey cause of some childhood issues of hers that are never clearly explained. The military isnt too keen on this big monkey also cause he causes even more traffic on 5th avenue than there ordinarily is. They want to shoot the big monkey but then they realize hes got a sensitive side after he catches the blonde when she falls from Trump Tower after an argument with her boyfriend. Even with all the high tech special effects, all the bells and whistles it just doesnt seem worth the $8 dollar ticket and the $7 dollar popcorn. Tim From Wisconsin
raspberrywine - I don't think that Trump had a Tower in the '30's .Being a glutton for punishment I think I will go to the theatre to see it this weekend. It seems to me that is a movie just to sit back and enjoy, not to think too much about. Tim
Julie
Hard to believe, but I've never seen any of the King Kong movies. Obviously, I am aware of the basic plot. Hmmmmm... maybe I should go check this one out if it comes to town.
raspberrywine
Im sure its fun Tim, but all the remake stuff thats been going on in Holywood for 10 years really speaks to the small volume of great films they make each year, and the volume of new and interesting material available. Personally, I am waiting for "King Kong meets Love Bug." Now thats going to be a film.
BadfingerBarb
The original King Kong is one of my all time favourite films. It's always a bad idea to remake a classic. But there are loads of young folks out there that won't watch B&W films or films lacking computer generated special effects. It's about time someone updated Citizen Kane isn't it?Rosebud... raspberrywine
sure, maybe instead of uttering "rosebud" he could say "ipod" instead.
CubbiefanMike
Raspberrywine it is easy to be critical... but as Tim said it is a movie to sit back and enjoy... not meant to stimulate the brain. Rich from Pa... I dont understand why you were bored... what were you expecting? We all know the story of King Kong.
raspberrywine
as I said to Tim, "I am sure its fun,...."
Rich From PA
CubanMike:Why was I bored? The original movie was only 100 minutes long. Peter Jackson delivered an extra 80 minutes of bloated exposition and, while I know it's not a documentary, the suspension of disbelief required for this version was off the scale.Anyway, like I said, just one man's opinion.Rich
julesberry
I personally don't have an interest in seeing this remake. But thought I would pass along an opinion I have heard:I don't necessarily want my money back - but rather the three hours of my life I wasted.Has anyone seen Walk The Line? Rich From PA
Julesberry:I saw 'Walk The Line' and thought, not only was it an interesting movie, but the performances of Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon were Oscar-calibre.Give the big ape a pass and go and see the man in black.Rich
raspberrywine
Julesberry, I agree. I dont think the big monkey gets as many musical numbers.
julesberry
Thanks Rich, that's what I had heard. I'll buy the popcorn RBW.....
Raspbernie
Caught this yesterday. IMHO Jack Black is miscast. There are lots of GREAT special effects. You believe Kong is real. The original is better. With all of that said, I've spent more and gotten less, so I'd recommend you see this movie.Bernie
JohnO
All in all, great special effects, but way, way, way too long....especially in light of the fact that the damn projector broke after the first hour where I saw it, and they routed the crowd to a slightly later show, where we had to sit through the entire first hour again (!!!!!- snooze)My girlfriend cried at the end....as I told her -"Look...all she wanted was a commitment of some sort, but NO...all he wanted to do was climb towers, pound on his chest and act Mr. Macho - it never would have worked out!" Now, mind you, at the end, she's hugging Adrien Brody, but it's definitely a rebound type of thing that'll never work out......The first hour is like watching paint dry..... slowly. Once Kong shows up, it's better, but still way too long.Other holiday flicks - "The Family Stone" is just plain dreadful. "Memoirs of a Geisha" was worse than watching paint dry, but the book was excellent. "Bareback...er, Brokeback Mountain" is actually quite good, provided the overall themes of gay love and cheating on your spouse don't bother you. (This won't play well in the red states.) I don't think Ang Lee is capable of making a bad movie, and this is proof positive. "Walk The Line" is excellent, even if it is over a month old.... MikeC
I will see it soon. This past week, I bought a limited quantity of King Kong, Peter Jackson's Production Diaries. It has two DVD's, a full 52 page color Production Memoir with behind-the-scenes photographs, drawings and images from the production of the film; Four exclusive Art Prints from world-class artists with numbered collector's certificate of authenticity. And a firsthand account of the intense eight month production. Now, why didn't I buy two this past week? I'll go back again, this morning. If I can't find another one, I guess it will be a present to myself. But, it will be fun to watch with friends and family.Oh, here's a Hannukah and Christmas bonus for everyone: Rocky Balboa is filming now. I saw the production crew yesterday on location. In case you haven't heard, I'll give you a hint: Who's the actor who says in the film, "Adrienne..Adrienne?" Yes, Sylvestor Stallone. MikeC
Oh, I'm studying film, so this was quite a surprise for me. Film has so many facets. I'm interested in writing and directing, as well as using my music skills, maybe for a music score or a song. I'll be buying movies to hear the songs and movie scores on them. I have a friend in film school, at USC.But, I have to study everyting like cameras, lighting, improving each acting scene, the screenplay, sketching the scene before starting to film- The whole production scheme. So, the DVD will give me good knowledge and insights.
raspberrywine
When Hollywood gets desperate they turn to remakes and animals. This year: big monkeys, penguins, and a zebra who wants to be race horse.
darlene
King Kong has been a box-office disappointment so far, from what I've heard. Maybe people aren't into seeing remakes of the movie. It looks like they tried to make it a good film. But sometimes that's not enough. I saw the original when I was young and it (along with Mighty Joe Young and Godzilla) scared me to death! Maybe that's why I avoid it.I'm sure some people will really be into the effects. I haven't seen Walk The Line, and I haven't known of anyone who has.We have some avid movie buffs with discriminating tastes on this website, so I'm sure they'll offer insightful comments. --Darlene
Billy K.
I have no real interest in seeing a remake of Kong. In fact, not really thrilled to see a remake of anything......although "Titanic" won over this skeptic.Having a choice between seeing "Kong", or "War of the Worlds", I would pick "Kong" though......
