U-HAULs

I rented a U-Haul this evening so that I could go pick up the piano I bought first thing tomorrow morning. All they had available was a 24' truck so I took it. I got in the thing, drove it about 2 blocks, and nearly had a heart attack. It drives like a Tonka truck, it wobbles, it makes creaky noises, its steering column is out of alignment, its windshield wipers sound like the hulk snoring, and the brakes felt very strange (my son says they're fluid, whatever that means). It was raining so that didn't help matters. Everything is ok, its just that I've never driven such a dangerous vehicle in my life. It was scary. They're going to give me a refund, so that's not a problem. I just can't wait til tomorrow morning til that block of black and white stares at me waiting for me to play it. birthdaybirthday It'll be time to celebrate - Daisy gets her first piano!

Marv - I'm a little ole student still in school. Limited funds. By the time I pay a mover, by all the music sheets I want to play, get it tuned, and whatever else I might need, that can all add up. Remember my only income right now is educational loans. Oh and the size is, I don't know. It's an upright. It's solid Rosewood though, I know that. I've a digital photo of it if anyone has a photo account.

This roadie learned way back in the 70's NEVER rent from U-Haul, they just do not maintain their equipment. Sometimes a trailer is OK but never a truck. Every bad truck rental experience I hear about being bad involves U-Haul. For the band we now rent from Hertz Penske and their equipment is normally maintained to a high standard and when we have had an issue they took care of it immediately. The first couple of reunion shows we went to Budget but after having a bad experience on the Chicago run vowed never to rent from them again. Our job as a crew is tough enough without having to worry about transportation issues. If it just a small move look at local rental companies for trucks and trailers and if possible stay away from U-Haul.

* Opinions expressed in this post are strictly from the writer and in no way has the endorsement of the band or any rental company. However, I load/unload and drive the truck so I usually make the decision*

My sweet baby is sitting in my living room just a few feet from me. I am now the fifth person in my family to own a piano.

Went to another U-Haul and this one gave me a brand new truck with only 39,000 miles on it. It was so small it fit right up to my front door. She's doing just fine and loves her new home. Thanks Chris for your kind words. smilesmilesmile Thanks to everyone else who was worried for my piano. All went really well and she's fine.

I'm glad to hear it turned out fine, I was worried. We have move a piano three times and it survived, this was not a fine delicate piano - ours is a beast.

The first time we moved it was in the back of a pick-up truck. I don't want to think what would have happened if it had broken free. eek
