Tim From Wisconsin
There is an interesting article on the Pollstar website today about a proposed 2006 tour by The Cars. It references that Ric Ocasek would not like to take part, but Todd Rundgren would join as the lead singer. You probably know already that Benjamin Orr the Bass player / Singer passed away from cancer in 2000, so I guess my question would be... How can they call themselves The Cars? The Cars certainly had some great songs in the 70's and 80's, but as far as I'm concerned you have to have the "Voice" to give the songs their due. What do you think?Tim
aggiesjc
I would never think of them as The Cars with those two key players missing. Just wouldn't be the same.
popdude
That would be like Ringo touring with three other guys and calling it the Beatles.
Early Wynn
It's the old Joey Molland / Badfinger argument all over again.
Keith Nivan
REAL bad idea."Keith"
AJ
Hmmm...I don't mind the idea of Todd as the lead singer...there are some similar qualities in vocal style and sound - could be interesting. I agree that they should probably call the band something else but what? Todd Rundgren's Adentures In Cars? Car-topia? (Ouch, that was fun!) Tony Cartmill
Todd should open for the Raspberries with his own band...
Keith Nivan
Real GOOD idea. And bring Elliot Easton along as lead guitarist."K"
Tim From Wisconsin
Yes - Elliot is a great "South Paw" guitarist. I was able to see The Cars in 1980 when they were out in support of their Panorama album, and I was very impressed by the musicianship in the band - especially Elliot.Tim
hbecstacy
Todd Rundgren with the Cars? That's as ridiculous as someone replacing Freddie Mercury in Queen--it'll never work.As always, there's commercial power to using a familiar band name as opposed to a new one. A new group with TR, Elliott Easton, Greg Hawkes and David Robinson would be cool, but would promoters book them and would anyone show up?Ask Paul Rodgers, Brian May and Roger Taylor.--Howard
Billy K.
Don't bother unless Ocasek is on board.....By the way, what is he doing these days? And is Easton still touring with Creedence?
hbecstacy
Hey Billy K,Ocasek has a new solo CD coming out soon, check out www.ricocasek.com for sound bytesEaston is still touring with Creedence Clearwater Revisited (yet another band touring without a key member!)H
mannoman
Without Ocasek it's just a cover band.Ted
marvin
If Rundgren is supposedly Ocasek's replacement (a more than adequate one mind you), who's the new bassist to replace Ben Orr? Ric and Ben were the faces and the voices of the Cars. Accept no substitutes.Marv
darlene
Their signature sound wouldn't just be in serious jeopardy--it just *wouldn't* BE. The Cars without those two wouldn't be "The Cars." That's rather a fact of life. --Darlene
pierson
it seems that people will tolerate an awful lot of sh*t w/ "reunited" bands.... or ersatz make shift piece meal line-ups.... along w/ Doors, CCR, Queen, this is a new LOW... dreadful dreadful dreadful... Clem Burke will supposedly be on drums too....
Keith Nivan
pierson:Joke, right? Right? "Keith"
marvin
So two drummers (Burke and Robinson) and no bassist? That should bring forth a very interesting sound.Marv
John Shaft
If this tour actually happens with Todd I think an interesting choice for a bassist would be Todd's old sparring partner, Kasim Sulton. Whaddya think?
pierson
if clem is in the picture i'm sure it's sans Robinson.... which means he probably does not approve of the tour
pierson
it's all been reproted as fact so far.... makes for a nice joke... tell Ric Ocasek the news...Ben Orr is rolling in his grave
Raspbernie
With Todd and Kasim, maybe they should call the band Cartopia!Bernie
Gregkevinw
weak.... makes the raspberries reunion look all the more remarkable........
marvin
Doesn't make any sense at all. With two Utopia members and two ex-Cars, how does this qualify it as "The Cars"? I would have thought that Ocasek would object to them performing under that name. They should just call it "Cars in Utopia" and do songs from both bands.Marv
mannoman
I agree, Marv, it doesn't make sense. I would have thought Ric Ocasek owned the name? I guess not.Ted
