2 questionable new movie trends: Watch for them.

1. Too many recent international thrillers and dramas lately have a plot line where the American corporations and/or spy agencies are the underlying evil and immoral side of the problems, and the Arab leaders are just trying to protect their interests against the Western aggressors. "Syriana" is the perfect example of this. While a very well made movie, I don't know why almost all the Americans are portrayed as greedy bad, while even the suicide Arab bomber is just a poor sypathetic character.

2. In so many family-get-together movies lately (The Family Stone, Happy Endings, Saved, Home For The Holidays...), why is the gay son or daughter always the most well-adjusted member of the family? Is it only the hetero that has relationship issues?

Am I just paranoid, or is this Hollywood and Sundance furthering their political and social agenda?

I'm not sure Tony as I have more of a "target market" re: the movies I see and thus don't see a lot of what most people are seeing. But I'll keep my eyes open for these trends.

I'll add something though to your thought. It has always vexed me how Hollywood glorifies The Mafia/Organized Crime characters and we/I the audience get sucked in. Even goofy me, who thinks about these things, still find myself sometimes rooting for, or at least sympathetic to, the Al Pacino etc. type characters....when the cold reality is that these guys are just MURDERING SOCIETAL PARASITES.

Hell, I'm more disturbed about Hollywood doing bad remakes of horror/fantasy films - King Kong, The Fog, When A Stranger Calls (which I've seen proviews for), The Hills Have Eyes (ditto), the Poseidon Adventure (with the new one called just "Poseidon"), and atrocious remakes of several Japanese classics ("The Ring", "The Grudge", and the upcoming "Pulse").

The "Syriana" issue regarding Arabs....go see "Paradise Now" for a more balanced view. I'm kind of surprised that none of the more right-leaning board members haven't linked "Syriana" with G. Clooney's other recent flick, "Good Night & Good Luck".

Regarding all Hollywood Gays seemingly having good relationships, I suggest you see "Brokeback Mountain"....it portrays as f*cked up a relationship as anything I've seen in years.

Well, let's see...."Brokeback" covers well over 20 years, and it starts in the 60's, so that would make it the 80's or so, if my arithmetic's any good....not that it really matters, because intolerance, like good or bad taste, is timeless.

P.S. To avoid a possible misinterpretation, no, I'm not Gay, but one of my best friends (who's also my boss) is....and anybody who lives that lifestyle openly, even in this supposedly enlightenend day and age, is either very brave or just plain nuts.....

By the way, to give Tony a legit answer to his question about "BBM" and "our repressive 60's society just not accepting those 2 sweet loving cowboys"......Actually, their relationship is so f*cked up because it's not really clear that one of them (H.Ledger) is Gay, although he does have some sort of a physical addiction to the other, and he's not happy with his marriage situation.

The other character (Jake G.) is Gay, and wants a relationship with Ledger's character, even if he's also married. Both of them are lying to their spouses and cheating on them over the years, of course....it gets rather complex, and would have made a great soap opera, even if one of the characters had been a woman. Society's intolerance is just a subplot, one of many.

P.S. And lest anyone question the possibility of a non-gay man having sex with men and not being Gay himself.....I suggest you go find the biggest, meanest ex-convict you can, and tell him/her that if they had sex more than once while incarcerated, they're Gay. (Ledger's first encounter with Jake G. was while they were out in the middle of nowhere, with only the sheep and/or horses for company....not unlike a jail scenario).

Just wait till they combine all these themes all together Cartmill:

Gay, but well adjusted arabic terrorist falls in love with Osama Bin laden while at Afghani training camp. (New meaning to the word "camp" in this context). After a torrid affair, against the Koran I would note, he convinces Osama to lay down terrorism for future lives as Cowboys. They ride off into the Himalayas, after much protesting from Osama's 37 wives, until a greedy but well meaning CIA agent ,who also works as a greeter at Haliburton on the weekends, tracks them down by gaining their whereabouts by bribing Packistani locals with copies of the latest AD HOC band CD/DVD. After ten years in prison, Osama and "his friend" become Christian missionaries to Canada. The CIA agent, imprisoned for exceeding Federal bribery statutes manages a crack ring in the prison, when he's not golfing, the profits of which are funneled to top lobbyists in D.C. to support the freedom of the Cowboy lifestyle in Saudi Arabia and Syria.

Its got the makings of a big hit.

Raspberrywine - This pretty much sounds like what's already happening in Iraq and with the "war on terror"....except you somehow have to work in something about the US President's malapropisms and 2 drunk daughters......

Seriously....with the recent releases of "Breakfast On Pluto" and "Transamerica", I think we're leaving out the new trend in movies of transvestites and/or pre-op transsexuals as main characters. Somehow, this needs to be worked into your plot....

Oh Dear! Now I hear Peter Jackson's plan for the sequel to King Kong will have Jack Black and Naomi Watts going back to Skull Island and finding Kong's brother...Who just happens to be a Gay Ape! Complete with a lisping growl!

The film's working title: "Queenie Kong". But it might be changed to "Fey Kong" or "Return to Brokeback Island"...Anyway, Naomi tries to bond with Queenie, but all he wants to focus on is some major "finger fondling" with Jack Black's character. When you think of it, there's alot of man to love there...Oh Geez! Queenie carries Jack around the island, but sometimes he falls out and lands in danger. Seems Queenie has a limp wrist compared to his brother.

Once again, the film will be 3 hours long, but the studio wants Jackson to cut it down by shortening the Empire State Building scene. It seems Queenie Kong stops his climb up every couple of floors to redecorate the apartments and offices...

PC Hollywood strikes again!

a former boss of mine used to come to work, glowing about "The Sopranos." invariably he would ask me if i had seen said episode and then would go on about how great it was. i told him that i don't associate with such people at portrayed in the show, and i wouldn't invite them into my home in person, nor on the TV. he thought about that all day long, making several comments. he decided that the show was not appropriate for his family and he discontinued watching it after that.

you know, if people would stop watching that shit, they would stop making it. thank goodness that i see NO US television where i live.
