Carmen Smalley, without a doubt some artists that might have had only one hit in Europe might have had more than one hit in America - and vice versa.

On your list there are a few who've had more than one hit in America:

Mary Hopkins (also hit with "Goodbye")

Joan Baez ("The Night They Drove Ole'Dixie Down")

Rare Earth ("I Just Want to Celebrate" among others)

Tommy Roe ("Sweet Little Sheila" among others)

The Turtles (many more hits beside "Happy Together")

The Association (also many hits besides "Windy")

The IDES OF MARCH wrote a real cute song called

ONE HIT WONDER. They had their one hit called VEHICLE. At one point in the song Jim Peterik names about 30 or more one hit wonder bands. At the end of the song he sings "I gotta stop singing cause my throat is gettin parched but not until I tell you 'bout Chicago's Ides of March.

Ok,that is really corny, but it really is a cute song smile

I forgot to mention something. Tomorrow morning

a radio station I listen to will replay a show from last year. It is called Rock n Roll Roots, and tomorrow it is a repeat of the ONE HIT WONDER BANDS OF THE 70's. Try to listen if you are able to. The station is 97.1 WDRV THE DRIVE.

I really enjoy this radio show.

G smile

Wow, I thought some of these lost 45's I only remembered and loved like Brandy, Love Grows,Beach Baby, and Back when My Hair was short..

Most of my faves have alteady been listed but here's a few others I liked that I don't think were mentioned ...

Cruel to be Kind - Nick Lowe (only a one hit wonder in terms of charting)

Shake it - Ian Mathews

Whan Bam - Silver

Welcome Back - John Sebastian

I Can Help - Billy Swan (Sounds just like Ringo to me)

The Night Chicago Died - Paper Lace

Bang a Gong - T. Rex

Sunshine - Jonathan Edwards

What The World Needs Now - Tom Clay

In the Summertime - Mungo Jerry

In the Year 2525 - Zager and Evans

Na Na Hey Hey - Steam

Tracy - Cuff Links

Sugar Sugar - Archies (Both sung by Ron Dante and charted at the same time)

Angel of the Morning - Seattles own Merrilee Rush

Chick a Boom - Daddy Dewdrop

Friday On My Mind - Easy Beats (check out the Raspberries unreleased "Oh Tonight" for comparison

Eve of Destruction - Barry McGuire

Winchester Cathedral - New Vaudville Band

Not sure if it ever charted much but anyone remember "Saturday Morning Confusion" by Bobby Russell

I first heard "Saturday Morning Confusion" for the first time back in the Summer of 1990 when I bought "Super Hits Of The 70's: Volume 6". The song went to # 28 (Hot 100) & # 13 (AC Charts) back in September of 1971. Bobby Russell died of a heart attack on November 19, 1992. He was the first husband of actress Vicki Lawrence. Matt

Great list Steve except there are a few that I think are not really one hit wonders:

Welcome Back - John Sebastian. He might have had one other solo hit. Of course he charted many times with the Lovin' Spoonful.

I Can Help - Billy Swan (Sounds just like Ringo to me). Also might have had one more Pop hit, but he charted a few times on the Country charts.

Bang a Gong - T. Rex. Didn't "Jeepster" or one of their other songs chart? I don't have my Billboard book handy, but I'm sure Matt has his!

Sunshine - Jonathan Edwards. I believe he had another hit with "Everyone's Gone to the Moon."

Sugar Sugar - Archies. I think they also charted with "Bang Shang A Lang."

Marvin,

John Sebastian, T-Rex & Billy Swan are indeed, US one hit wonders--all 3 never made the top 40 after "Welcome Back, Kotter" "Bang A Gong" and "I Can Help" respectively...

"Sunshine" was by Jonathan Edwards--no relation to Jonathan King who was, also, a one-hit wonder with "Everyone's Gone To The Moon"

The Archies had 4 top 40 entries: "Sugar Sugar" (#1), "Bang Shang-a-lang" (#22), "Jingle Jangle" (#10) and "Who's Your Baby?" (#40)....

Here's some trivia, The song "Magic" by Pilot was produced by none other than Alan Parsons, and the lead singer David Paton went on to sing in The Alan Parsons Project!

Even better, David Paton and Ian Bairnson were part of Kate Bush's band on "Wuthering Heights" and other '70s recordings... Paton and Bairnson also formed a short lived band, KEATS, with Zombies vocalist Colin Blunstone in '84 (a very weak effort compared to their previous work).

Pilot released 3 albums after the debut with "Magic" and all 3 saw improved songwriting (the last 2 only came out a imports)...the fianl album being their greatest ("Two's A Crowd")...which sadly was never issued on the CD like the other 3...

in 2001 Paton and Bairnson went back to recut the majority of "Two's A Crowd" (which was originally produced by Alan Parsons) and retitled it "Blue Yonder"... At its best, this stuff is in the league of Eric's best solo work... it's hard to believe they could recut an album almost 25 years-old and not lose an ounce of its, no pun intended, magic...
