TOMMY TUNES
By the way TOMMY, I'm anxious to see how my newest pitcher, Gil Meche, handles those Bronx Bummers tonight! You're COLD Paulie. Ice cold.
JohnO
"Face it, put George Steinbrenner and the Yankees in a world where everybody has the same money to spend and the same chance to get players and you have what you had in the late sixties and early seventies... a half empty Yankee stadium and a team that barely finished out of the cellar!"Yeah, and if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle! Seriously, all things being equal, we'd have thirty teams with 81-81 records, wouldn't we? IMO, the reason the Yankess sucked during their mid-'60's - '75 swoon, is because Topping & Webb sold the club to CBS in '64. CBS has never acquired anything without seriously f*cking it up! Take the Fender guitar/amp company for another example. Pre-CBS strats and teles cost outrageously more than their later counterparts, because the quality was compromised once they took over that company. The Yankees resurgence in attendance in '76 (after 2-3 years in Shea)probably had as much to do with the new Yankee Stadium, post-facelift, as it did with their resurgence in the standings in '76. (And BTW, no matter how bad they ever were, they still outsold the other AL teams in both RFK (DC) up until '70 or '71, and Memorial Stadium (Balt.)The fact of the matter is - someone's going to rise to the top, regardless of the circumstances. The best years of Steinbrenner's Yankees, 1996-2000, occurred in a period where he wasn't buying up every superstar in the universe. PLEASE name me the free agent superstars of those years that wore pinstripes - Paul O'Neil? Tino Martinez? Scott Brosius? Chick Knoblach? Joe Girardi? David Wells? David Cone? Yes, they signed over-the-hill Wade Boggs, Strawberry, Gooden, and they got Clemens (whom the Red Sox gave up on 2 years before), but had to part with Wells coming off an 18-4 year. Hell, their home-grown talent (Jeter, Bernie Williams, Posada, Pettite, Rivera) was probably more responsible for winning those 4 flags.....How many Hall of Famers were there at their peaks? - maybe Jeter and Rivera, obviously Clemens (who was going to be inducted anyway, long before his Yankee days). Torre somehow turned these guys into a great TEAM....something he's had trouble doing with Giambi, A-Rod, Mussina, Sheffield, and other recent free agent signings. Even this year, Torre's done remarkably well with those call-ups I mentioned. The main thing George has done regarding the management of this club the past 10 years, is to let Torre and Cashman do their jobs on the field and in the office. JohnO
"Wow. I'm impressed. Guess they're not just a "hometown" station..."Paulie - I obviously misunderstood what you were talking about. I think you're talking about the TV station, which I've never seen. I thought you were talking about the team....and yeah, in about a 100 year history, where they've won, what, 26 flags....this means they haven't won it 74 or so times, for you Yankee haters...so yeah, the team has lost some classic games over the years, I'm guessing. Paulie Mississippi
TOMMY, I simply could not resist picking up Meche... off the FA wire... might wish I hadn't, but I had to roll them dice! JohnO, I love baseball. Have all my life. And there was a time in the early '70's that I actually felt sorry for the Yankees, even with all their pennants beause things were so hopeless. I hesitate to mention that they got better when Steinbrenner, a man who was convicted of "getting creative with money" I belive, started finding loopholes he could exploit in his favor. I will give you that he didn't sign any hall of famers for a while there, but I won't admit that it wasn't for the lack of trying. He scarfed up any and all quality players who were avaiable who didn't mind selling their soul to sign with him. Scott Brosius and Tino Martinez might not be HOF'ers but they were sought after by many teams as the premium free agents or almost free agents of those years.Sure, you're right that as a NY'er I'd no doubt cheer the actions of George because too much of the attitude of that town is "We're Number One, and $#%^ you, we don't care if you even HAVE a number..."As early as '78, after I started seeing what Free Agency could have meant to the game... and what it was turning into because of Steinbrenner... I found my true favorite team... ANY team that plays the Yankees on any given day. I pull for the Mets in the Subway series because they truly are the lesser of two evils.IMHO. Tony Cartmill
Yankees? Schmankees! The Padres pitchers don't need 6 runs a game to post a win on their stats...Unfortunately, they need more than 2 runs, which is all the meek Padre offense has been giving them lately.Sometimes, a bloated payroll pays off for the freakin' spoiled NY fans. Tony Cartmill
Padres-1 Dodgers-0. Typical Petco Park nail-biter with fine pitching, non-clutch hitting and Trevor Hoffman squeezing out another save after letting 2 runners get on, and showing us the wonders of shining in the spotlight with tobacco juice running down his chin...Oh yeah, Gotta have a wad of disgusting "chew" rotting your mouth to have fun in baseball... Early Wynn
Two things:1. We love to hate Steinbrenner, but I wish the Phillies' owners wanted to win as much as he does. I'd take him in a heartbeat.2. Abreau is a dog. He's not a winner. He puts up nice stats, but he's all about himself. Notice that since he's been gone, the Phillies have been winning. Even the players have commented about what a dog he was in the clubhouse. He's surrounded by winners now but (despite what Donnie Osmond said) one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch. Tony Cartmill
The Padres went into a slump right after they released a couple of sub-par-productive, but great clubhouse chemistry guys, Vinnie Castilla and Eric Young.Darn it if 8 million dollar salaries just don't seem to be enough motivation to play your best anymore... I'd take him in a heartbeat.I wouldn't trade him for any other owner in any sport. As you may alread know they broke ground the other day on a "new" Yankee Stadium. What youdo not know is I and others are leading a movement to name the new stadium "Steinbrenner Stadium".2. Abreau is a dog. He's not a winner. He puts up nice stats, but he's all about himself. JohnO
Tommy - Dammit, if the Yanks go anywhere this post-season, it'll only be because the Angels won't qualify for the playoffs - they certainly have the NYYs' number again this year (and I think they're the only team in MLB with a .500+ record against Torre since he's been there).... TOMMY TUNES
You are correct JohnO about the Angels 500+ record against the Joe Torre Yankees. I don't even want to think about their post season record.
