This is a new fav of mine via Phil Block on Pinterest concerning what he thought for so long were the lyrics of GATW:

For years I thought it was weird that (EC/Raspberries) sang that a girl told him to "Please Go Away" I mean come on Eric...  we're guys...we'd just lie (about what happened).  Felt a little foolish when I realized later it was "Please GATW."

Hey, Cayennegirl --

You think that was bad ??  Until recently when I looked up the actual lyrics after seeing the Mike Douglas show performance of GATW ---  I was slightly embarrassed to realize that between the background refrain that the guys we singing ( ... Baby Go All The Way) with the overlay of Mr. Carmen singing ( ...Pleeeaassee go all the way )  that what I was hearing was "Please, Stacey Go-oh A-way-ay-ay ), as if it were a moral struggle directed at one lady in particular.   Kinda like when Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons sang about "Dawn, go away, I'm no good for you" type of thing.

The correct lyrics make better sense --- LOL!!!  way better sense. :P :P :P

Willie Nelson's song "On The Road Again"

" . . . On the road again -
Just can't wait to get on the road again.
The life I love is making music with my friends

And I can't wait to get on the road again.
        On the road again . . . "

and what I heard was . . . .

" On the road again -
Just can't wait to get on the road again.
The WIFE I love is making music with my friends

And I can't wait to get on the road again.
        On the road again "

What I heard definitely put a different perspective on what the song was all about!!

In the song "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" by Elton John on the Captain Fantastic album,   does this change the meaning much??

Correct lyrics :

"...And I would have walked head on into the deep end of the river
Clinging to your stocks and bonds, Paying your H.P. demands forever
Coming in the morning with a truck to take me home..."

...and what I heard was ...

"...And I would have walked head on into the deep end of the river
Clinging to your stocks and bonds, Paying your H.P. demands forever
Coming in the morning with a trunk to take me home

. . .  truck  or  trunk  --- he'd still be deceased either way (!???)

Funny topic - I see someone already posted CCR's "Bad moon on the rise" as "bathroom on the right" - I always sang it as "there is a baboon on the right" (I was so confused by that song!)

Also, " Barbara Ann"  - went to a dance, looking for romance

I sang it as went to a dance, looking for a MANce - that didn't work so well, either....

Lastly, "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" - I don't want to spoil the party, so I'll go. I would hate my disappointment to show...

I sang it as "I don't want to spoil the party, so I'll go.  I would hate my "little pointer" to show...."  HUH??

On 1/14/2019 at 9:52 PM, James said:

When Eric's COH album came out, my sister Dee Dee was 11 years old. I remember playing "Hey Deanie" for her, and telling her that Eric was singing "Hey DEE DEE won't you come out tonight.........".

: )

James, yet another bit of "parallel universe" for us: When my little brother Jeff was a kid, I told him the Paul McCartney & Wings song "Jet" was "Jeff." He bought it for a while, until he got a little older.

(Of course, most of the lyrics in that song are quite nebulous anyway...)

Gosh, the parallel universe is even more parallel. My first name is James and middle name Jeffrey. In most venues of my life I have always gone by Jeff.

So in the summer of 1975 my family took a vacation to Sister Bay, Wisconsin where my Mom´s family had a cottage. We took along my best friend Chooch. We had a blast.

Anyway, we had the album "Band on the Run" at the cottage and I played it for Chooch and my little brother (he was 9 at the time). When "Jet" came on (they weren´t familiar with the song, I was), I told them both that McCartney was singing "Jeff". They kinda bought it for a few minutes, then got wise to my BS.

P.S. LC, say hi to your brother Jeff from me!

I met Anthony in 8th grade, we became close friends very quickly. He is full blooded Italian and a was a great athlete. When he ran, to me he looked like a Choo-Choo train chugging along, although in his case chugging along very fast. So I nicknamed him then and there "Chooch"....and it stuck like glue, and is what I and many others still call him to this day.

Funny thing, his grandma who lived with his family and was straight out of Italy and barely spoke English....when she heard us call him Chooch she got really pissed as I guess Chooch in Italian is a pejorative. He calmed her down and explained the situation, and she and I became pretty tight. Also when we took that trip I mentioned above, we stopped in Chicago for a couple days to hang with my Mom´s side of the family. When Chooch´s grandma heard he and I were going to Chicago she sat us down and explained to us in very broken English that we had to watch out for the Mafia cuz it was strong in Chicago.  : )    ....Chooch and I still have a laugh at that one. She was the absolute best.
