JohnO
My God! I've been in bed since last Wednesday afternoon, with fevers ranging from 99 to 102, a constant headache, coughing that's given me sore ribs, and aches all over! I saw my GP on Friday night, and have felt better since he prescribed a big bottle of cough syrup with codeine.....Per the doctor, this is going around the entire DC area....Anyone else gotten it yet? (NOTE: I'm in a local Kinkos, trying not to cough and infect anyone else......). And this is after getting a flu shot late last year!..... darlene
You have my complete sympathy. That "cough" has been going around all my schools for a couple of months now, and I think it's finally on its way out. It either stays the flu (my dr said about 10% of patients he's seen keep it as the flu), which is the BEST scenario! Most get bronchitis, which is nastier, and the remaining number (of which I was one) get pneumonia. I kept teaching away when my voice came back and thought it was better, but it had turned into pneumonia.GOOD LUCK!!! Listen to EC and Razz music. THAT HELPED ME!!! --Love, Darlene
dianed
John, I sympathize with you !! I had it also, the flu from hell, about two weeks ago. I didn't move from my couch for 5 days....I couldn't move ! Same as you, fevers, aches, coughing......I felt like I went ten rounds with Ali !! All I did was flood myself with orange juice and chicken soup. It takes about a good 10 days to start feeling human again. Feel better !! Bessieboo
Last year I had the like you had.....I wanted to die. I became good friends with the bathroom tile. It was so coool, smoooth so I just stayed there. When I finally felt well enough to go to the Doctor, it turned out I had waited long enough for it to become pneumonia. I had pneumonia three or four times last year. When I got stronger I got my pneumonia and flu shots. PS I have not been sick at all this year

MAM
My wife & I, our tenant next door, and the other two guys in our band have had it for two weeks. And it doesn't want to go away! And I got a flu shot for what reason?
darlene
As you all probably know, they miscalculated what strain of flu would hit this year. They got it completely wrong, so those who received their flu shots weren't prepared for this strain. It's a particularly virulent one--like the Hong Kong and Beijing varieties. I had Victoria A strain one year and the hospital never could figure out how or where I got it because the strain hadn't been around in years. If you can't eat and are dehydrating, keep drinking water and soak Lorna Doones or other rich butter cookies in water and eat those. They will replace water lost from not being able to eat much food.Best wishes. It *does* stay around for a long time (the cough is the first symptom to arrive and the last one to go) but it eventually *does* leave. Like Diane said, it takes anywhere from 10 days to 2 weeks or longer. And don't make the mistake I did and keep working. GO TO BED AND REST AND STAY THERE TILL YOU FEEL BETTER! If you don't, it can and *will* become bronchitis and/or pneumonia. See a doctor, then rest and get lots of sleep, drink LOTS of fluids like Diane said and eat as much nutrient-rich food as you can.I hope everyone feels better soon! --Darlene
Guest
John, the last time I had the 'flu, I swear, was about 7 years ago, I was nursing a little boy at the time, and I swear at times I had three blankets on, and other times threw them to the floor! This went on for a whole week, and I had to turtle my way into the shower, made every effort to spoon feed the baby and try to eat, but I had to leave the others up to their Dad with his natural daughter visiting for a weekend.Get better soon, drink plenty of clear fluids, then graduate to soft foods, and remember to wash your hands frequently when dealing with the public. The includes hand-shaking and your Aunt Martha's kiss on the cheek. Then, they all had 'flu shots, I didn't, and they got it. That year they also miscalculated, as they did last year and this year.I wash my hands immediately before I do anything else after having shopped or gone for the mail, and haven't had so much as a sore throat for three years! If my government can't get accurate predictions and medicinals from the scientists, I'd rather not waste thrir time and money on getting something to prevent what's not coming anyway!I just keep my hands clean and don't bother with places that have high concentrations of possible sick people. boopell
I've had the flu twice-once about 16 years ago and then again about a month ago. Both times it only lasted about 48 hours. Luckily I've got a killer immune system. The rest of the family isn't so lucky. They all had it for about a week.Has it been bad where you guys live? We've had school systems taking turns closing trying to get rid of this stuff.
ECatw
I'm getting surrounded by people who had the fever and the diarrheal version. I think it might be matter of time before my luck runs out. Hopefully, it'll skip me this time. I had it about two years ago and it was no fun! It lasts about a week before you even feel human again.Drink lot of liquids- Gatorade worked well with me.Take care and get lots of rest. AnneG
A friend of mine had it real bad. She laid on the bathroom floor most of the day, upset stomach, and was very confused. Husband had to stay at home with her one day; a friend another. She's taken benadryl, sudafed, comtrex, advil, antibiotics, and a drug similar to codeine. My husband gave me bronchitis one year - and given that I have never had a cold, and only occasionally feel run down, I let it go on too long before getting checked out. Get plenty of fluids - gatorade is great - and if you're feeling really lousy for more than a few days - go to a doctor!Anne

Guest
Hey boopell, it hasn't been bad enough here yet to lose the schools, but we do have until May for 'flu season. My immune system is usually very good, and part of it has been because my body was naturally staying relatively safe in order to b-f my last three children.I have another bonus which has terrible side effects, though: Psoriasis. It's a genetic condition that has the immune system fooled into thinking it constantly has to rapidly replace skin tissue, so there are all kinds of switches being turned on to send more blood cells, actually make more skin and it's hell. My newer cells underneath the regular oldone are eing rplacedfaster than normal. As I said, washing my hands after outings does help, and so did constantly making antibodies for my kids to rake in, but a simple case of strep throat whenmy osoriasis genes are NOT active someohow turns the immune systm against the sin again, and it's just crazy.May, 2007, we had a horrible 'flu running around, my youngest caught it, his white cells stormed around and killed the 'flu, then he had strep too early after that and had to be hospitalized because his immune system made to many white cells, and they clogged up the kidneys. One more day and we were going to lose him. He was full of 60 lbs. of water weight! He's just going off of his medication in a few days. But it's a thing my grandfather died of, and also can return.3 of my 4 kids have the skin disorder, too. But they never get the really horrible 'flu! Billy K.
I got mine right when I was going to go on vacation.......originally, there was no space on my connection flights out of Europe to ANY city Ukraine for two days, which was strange since it was early January. On the third day, a flight from Seattle to Chicago cancelled, which blew any chances of connection. Was going to try again, and didn't feel all that well.....so decided to bag the trip at that point. And just as well....it would have been miserable being abroad with the flu! TheScentLady
Steve made me get a flu shot this year. First time I've had the flu in more than 20 years. Fever, chills, coughing, wheezing; my nose was redder than Rudolph's. Needed two rounds of antibiotics. The only good thing was that I had no appetite. Soup and orange juice became my best friends. boopell
prettymomThe hand washing thing does make a big difference. I'm almost fanatical about it and I'm always bugging my boys about it. When my oldest son was born in 1985 the nurses scared me so badly that I became a total germophobe. I washed my hands constantly. They were so so dry and cracked that I had to bandage them to go out in public because they wouldn't stop bleeding. I knew I had totally gone over the edge when I started using bleach to wash my hands. It was weird because I was completely normal before. I finally made myself get over it and now I'm fine and thank goodness it didn't rub off on my kids.I'm glad your son is ok. Kids can sure scare you. I've had a few scares of my own over the years. And now that mine are mostly raised (my youngest is 13)I'm going to be a grandma this June--and it all starts over again!

Guest
I haven't had it yet, but never say "never". And that 'flu shot was meant for another strain, so they had it wrong.I don't care if I lose ten more pounds; it's the symptoms that get me! And who's around when the kids get ill and Dad isn't mobile? Yup. Mom.

Guest
My youngest was in hospital yesterday with a headache. They feared the worst - another attack of a rarely inherited kidney disease. Luckily, he's all right. Even better, every one of us has a super immune system that even turns on itself with psoriasis, arthritis, all kinds of other things. So, the 'flu isn't the worst of our problems. We cope.I wish all who have or have had the 'flu no more of that stuff, because I know how hard it was to have the 'flu. Twice in my life.Strange how other things can be involved, but true.Stay well, all.
