marvin
Ok Bob you're going to have to help me out. I've checked out all the major sites I know of (Canadian and U.S.),as well as some of the lesser-known sites, and no one has anything by Artful Dodger anymore. Although, did you know there is now a UK band with the same name? In any case, do you have their music on cd? Where did you get it from? If my search continues to be fruitless, how about making me a copy?Marvin
Matthew C. Clark
When I went to: www.allmusic.com (All Music Guide), it seems that the Artful Dodger CD's are no longer made. What a shame! I have never heard of Artful Dodger though. Their last two albums "Honor Among Thieves" & "Rave On" went to # 208 & # 209 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Album Charts. They did NOT hit the Billboard Top 200 Album Charts. Matt

marvin
The following site has Artful Dodger's "Honor Among Thieves" disc. A bit pricey, but... www.ccmusic.com Marvin
Billy K.
Even one non-fan has thought the band's name was cool.....Tommy Lasorda, former manager of the L.A. Dodgers, titled his book "The Artful Dodger"
BadfingerBarb
The Artful Dodger was a character in Dickens' "Oliver Twist".
Billy K.
Oh, thanks Barb.....now it makes sense....didn't think that it would be likely for Lasorda to be inspired by a semi-famous rock band, but you never know.......I've heard stranger things before....... Billy K.
Yeah, I read some of that Shakespeare stuff YEARS ago, but it just didn't dawn on me.....Anyway, since someone mentioned "Rave On", that also brings to mind a story about a relatively new Swedish band. They call themselves the "Ravon-ettes", after the Buddy Holly song.......but in a recent interview, they mentioned that people assumed that they named their band after "Raisin-ettes" candy--something not generally available in Sweden. marvin
I've spent this weekend listening to a bunch of Artful Dodger that was given to me by Bob and Pat Pierson - most of which I had never heard before. All I can say is, now I know how people who missed out on the 'berries the first time feel. How did I miss out on Artful Dodger? The music is simply incredible. I remember when the band first came to prominence, and I recall reading reviews in Circus and Hit Parader, but why I never caught onto them, I have no idea. Sigh! Another band that time and people have sadly forgotten.Marvin
popdude
"Rave On" has always been my favorite Artful Dodger record. Power pop doesn't come any better than "She's Just My Baby" ot "It's A Lie."
Al K
Wow...what a great thread Marvin! I'm a HUGE Artful Dodger fan. 4 albums...all great. John you hit it right on the head about Rave On...I still can listen to that album from start to finish, some 23 years later. Not nearly as rock as the 1st two albums but a great pop record. They played a reunion show at the Agora in Cleveland circa 1990 and it was amazing. "Think Think", "Wayside", "Honor Among Thieves", "Scream", "It's Over" (talk about two great power ballads!)Their downfall was that they had the same managers as another up and coming band who had shown greater initial success - and the managers decided to focus on the other band instead. Anybody know the other band?
Al K
Now that i'm thinking about it the reunion show was in the '95-'96 era...
marvin
Tell us who that other band was, please?I have to say one thing about AD, their songs are chock-full of strong melodies and songs that stick in your head. The one knock against them, and this is personal preference, I would have liked to have heard more harmonizing. At times the lead singer Billy Paliselli(on songs such as "Scream") reminds me a heck of a lot of a combination of Rod Stewart and Cinderella lead singer Tom Kiefer.Marvin
Al K
Yeah...and the Rod Stewart comparison was very much an item at AOR radio...it actually hurt the band at the time - in the mid 70's it wasn't cool to be thought of as a blatant imitator of another's sound. Unlike today where an "artist" can't do anything original if they tried, and it still sells millions. The other band...AEROSMITH. The managers - LEBER/KREBS.Al
marvin
It's been a heck of a long time since I've been as floored by a rock band the way I was when I listened to these AD songs last week. Too bad the band and the song are over 20 years old. I'm going to dig up my old Hit Parader and Circus mags to see what they had to say about the band.Marvin

Rich From PA
Marvin:I was also a big fan of Artful Dodger. I even had the opportunity to do a phone interview with Gary Cox when they released Babes On Broadway.I have put together a compilation disc for Artful Dodger that covers all of their albums. Let me know if you'd like a copy.Rich
