Both "PP& M" & the Kingston Trio" sang it with the "Trio" having the BIG Hit!

It conveys nicely the uselessness of war and how it ravages our young.

Also put nicely by "Phil Ochs"-

It's always the old who lead us to a war,

always the young that fall...."

From -"I Ain't Marchin' Anymore".-Ira.

Just woke up to go you- know-what and I saw so little action today that I thought I'd throw something up here for any other folks who are up and saying...I need a trivia question..or I can't sleep.

"NOCTURNAL POP QUIZ".

!)WHO DID "(MEET ME) AT MIDNIGHT MARY"?

2)WHO HAD THE FIRST HIT VERSION OF "MIDNIGHT HOUR PRE- "WILSON PICKETT"? (THIS LONG ISLAND, ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME GROUP CHANGED TO A HIPPIE STYLE MID-STREAM-AND WENT ON TO HAVE MANY "BEAUTIFUL," "GROOVY" HITS.)

3)EASY ONE-WHO "THANKED THE LORD FOR THE NIGHT TIME"?

4)WHO PRE-DATED ELVIS ON "SUCH A NIGHT"? (HE WAS ONCE ONE OF MANY LEAD SINGERS FOR AN ICONIC EARLY ROCK AND ROLL GROUP.)

GOOD LUCK NIGHT OWLS.-Ira.

Ira - Re #2 - When did the Young Rascals release "In The Midnight Hour" as a single, let alone have a hit with it?...Unless it was maybe the B-Side of their first and only 1965 single, "I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore", it came out as a album cut on their debut LP, released in '66. Pickett co-wrote the song and had a hit with it in early '65.

This is NOT to say that the Young Rascals didn't have a regional hit with the song....but I can't find any evidence that it was a hit for them before WP's version.

Ira - Also, the Young Rascals' '66 version of "Mustang Sally", while not a single or a hit, pre-dated Wilson Pickett's hit version by about a year. I believe they did the very first cover version, after Sir Mack Rice's original (which, to the best of my knowledge, was never played on White stations). The early Rascals were such a great band...

Sorry JohnO I guess Midnight Hour got alot of play -I guess Rascals version was album cut.

Good call on Mustang...and Joey Powers.

My day for slight errors.

"Such A Night" was indeed sung by a man who was part of an iconic rock and roll group-however-he may have still been with this group singing lead on this tune-rather than have been billed as a solo.

Hints:

1)HE DIED MUCH TOO YOUNG.

2)HE SANG "LOVER PLEASE" DEFINITELY UNDER HIS OWN NAME AS A SOLO.

Ira

Ira - OK, I thought the singer had earlier been in the group. To quote from a review of an Elvis album on Amazon -

"Lincoln Chase's "Such a Night" was a hit twice. In 1953, Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters recorded it as one of their earliest singles. The bouncy tribute to a one-night stand (the words only talk about kissing, but you get the idea) drew an outstanding performance from the tenor-voiced McPhatter, and the song nearly topped the R&B charts. Johnny Ray recorded a typically emotive version for the pop market that drew comment for seeming to spell out the sexual implications of the lyrics."

Ray's version was apparently recorded 3 months after the Drifters'. My bad.....

Hey JohnO.. The Drifters - or what makes up the Drifters today tour New Zealand quite frequently and Kiwi and I saw them at the local pub here in Feilding once. Feilding is a town of 14,00 people so not a big place.

It was a fun night.. relaxed and good music.

3)EASY ONE-GIVE ME 3 SHOW-BIZ ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF MS.TELMA HOPKINS.

Wait...was she in that flick "Telma and Louise?" prayhaha

Actually, she was also the woman who yells, "Shut your mouth!" after Isaac Hayes sings "That cat Shaft is a baaaad mother..." in the theme song to "Shaft."

And I just remembered the sitcom - it was "Gimme a Break."
