JohnO Posted August 8, 2006 Share Posted August 8, 2006 Ira - Re #2 - When did the Young Rascals release "In The Midnight Hour" as a single, let alone have a hit with it?...Unless it was maybe the B-Side of their first and only 1965 single, "I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore", it came out as a album cut on their debut LP, released in '66. Pickett co-wrote the song and had a hit with it in early '65.This is NOT to say that the Young Rascals didn't have a regional hit with the song....but I can't find any evidence that it was a hit for them before WP's version. I believe they did the very first cover version, after Sir Mack Rice's original (which, to the best of my knowledge, was never played on White stations). The early Rascals were such a great band... To quote from a review of an Elvis album on Amazon -"Lincoln Chase's "Such a Night" was a hit twice. In 1953, Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters recorded it as one of their earliest singles. The bouncy tribute to a one-night stand (the words only talk about kissing, but you get the idea) drew an outstanding performance from the tenor-voiced McPhatter, and the song nearly topped the R&B charts. Johnny Ray recorded a typically emotive version for the pop market that drew comment for seeming to spell out the sexual implications of the lyrics."Ray's version was apparently recorded 3 months after the Drifters'.
