Movie Reviews.....

Recommended Posts

With the "Australia" and "Four Christmases" posts, just thought I'd weigh in on everything I've recently seen -

"Twilight" - Everyone I know who's read the books says that this doesn't so them justice. Frankly, it's pretty bad. Recommend seeing "Let The Right One In", a Swedish vampire flick that's 10 times better...

"Four Christmases" - Not particularly funny, IMO...and what's with cutting most of the lines/scenes from the preview? (In the movie, there's no scene with Steenburgen showing Vaughn a fat cheerleader photo of Reese; Duvall doesn't tell Reese that her boyfriend's a sissy; there's no interchange between Vaughn & Witherspoon about her getting shanked by 4 year olds; etc.) A HUGE waste of acting talent....

"Quantum of Solace" - Bond, only with no sense of humor...

"Australia" - Chick flick from Hell, with a non-too-cleverly disguised civil rights message (re: aborigines); it seemed 6 hours long to me...

"Transporter 3" - If you've seen one, you've seen 'em all.

"The Boy In The Striped Pajamas" - Excellent! And with a killer ending....

"Rachel Getting Married" - Anne Hathaway is totally out of her usual element in this - she can really act! Not recommended for everyone - it's very intense, with lots of shouting, dysfunctional family goings-on, etc.

"Happy-Go-Lucky" - Mike Leigh's latest, it's not one of his best, but still enjoyable.

"Slumdog Millionaire" - Expect Oscar nominations/activities on this one, especially in light of recent Mumbai visibility (where Danny Boyle shot this film). Even without this nonsense, the film is excellent!

"JCVD" - Speaking of Anne Hathaway above, whoda thunk that Jean Claude Van Damme would be able to pull off something like this? Recommended, and not just to kung fu afficionados....

"Anita O'Day - Life Of A Jazz Singer" - Easy listening geeks who think the likes of the Sex Pistols are extreme - go see this! Nothing like hearing an 85 year old lady describe her first experience with heroin, from 60+ years ago! Arguably the greatest white female jazz singer ever, this documentary about her is great!

"I've Loved You So Long" - Kristin Scott Thomas turns in her best acting job ever!...which is saying something. She plays a former doctor who's just gotten out of jail after serving 15 years for mudering her 6 year old son....and there isn't a dry eye in the house at the end of the movie....

"Synecdoche, NY" - Loved this, but I'm still not sure exactly what the Hell it's about...Phil Seymour Hoffman is excellent as usual.

"The Changeling" - Not nearly as bad as what most of the critics have been saying.....although I suspect Eastwood's upcoming "Gran Torino" will be another of his all-time classics. The man hasn't directed a bad movie in ages...(Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, the 2 Iwo Jima flicks, Changeling).

I have yet to see "Milk" (Every show at both theaters it's playing at in DC has sold out since last Wednesday), but I've heard that Sean Penn will get at least another Oscar nomination...

I liked the Bond movie because I think that Daniel Craig is the most exciting thing that's ever happened to that franchise. I love Judy Dench in her role, too. It's not all about techno-gadgets anymore... it's real action again! I just didn't care for the plot (too confusing) or the camera work (too shaken and too many quick-flash scenes.)

The new Bond was pretty good, altough it did seem to be more of an addendum to Casino Royale than a stand alone movie. I wish Daniel Craig didn't look so much like Vladimir Putin. Hopefully, the new franchise doesn't go too far with the their dabbling with Bond's dark side. A little humor is a good thing, even when you have a licence to kill.

If you have a dog, you owe it to yourself to go see Bolt. Don't dissmiss it out of hand as being just kiddie fare. Anything that can make me laugh these days is well worth the ridiculous ticket prices and the crowds. Christopher Walken as the addled pigeon was a riot. All around, good fun.
