THE SWEET HIT THE ROAD AGAIN WITH FRIENDS IN TOW:

The Sweet, originally formed by bassist Steve Priest, vocalist Brian Connolly and drummer Mick Tucker, rose to fame in the 70's with such hits as "Ballroom Blitz", "Fox on the Run", "Love is Like Oxygen", "Little Willy", "Hellraiser", "Teenage Rampage", "Blockbuster", "Action" and many others has reformed in the States led by bassist/vocalist Steve Priest.

Steve is joined by guitarist Stuart Smith who was taught by Deep Purple's Ritchie Blackmore and went on to play in a version of "Sweet" with Steve Priest in the late 80's and then with Keith Emerson in a band called The Aliens of Extraordinary Ability before forming his own band Heaven & Earth in 1997. In 1998 Smith released a critically acclaimed album called "Heaven & Earth featuring Stuart Smith" with guest appearances by Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi), Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple), Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow), Kelly Hansen (Hurricane/Foreigner), Carmine Appice (Rod Stewart/Jeff Beck/Vanilla Fudge), Bobby Kimball (Toto) and Steve Priest. This album won Stuart the "Best Guitarist" and "Album of the Year" award two years in a row at The Los Angeles All Access Music Awards".

On drums is renowned drummer Richie Onori who, as well as playing with Stuart Smith in "The Aliens of Extraordinary Ability" and "Heaven & Earth" has also played with Louis Johnson, Bobby Kimball and Rick Derringer. Rounding out the line up is powerhouse vocalist Joe Retta from Queen Nation, and keyboard player Stevie Stewart from The World Classic Rockers. In Sweet you will hear all the hits and more played as they were meant to be heard and with an energetic stage show that is second to none.

That's the press release. Interestingly, this is one of two Sweet lineups now operating. The other one, Andy Scott's Sweet, is still performing in the U.K. Since Steve Preist has long been based in the U.S., he's running his version here now. Scott and Priest are the only surviving original members of Sweet.

BTW, the band name was similar to that of Raspberries, in that there wasn't originally a "The" at the beginning ... that was added over the years. This band was always "Sweet", not "The Sweet."

And now there are two "Sweets" ... similar to the current situation with the band Nazareth ... there's a version in Europe with original vocalist Dan McCafferty and bassist Pete Agnew, while founding guitarist Manny Charlton recently launched "Nazareth featuring Manny Charlton" for touring in the U.S.

Anyway, for fans of "Sweet", there is a version of the band playing those great tunes ... they're as much Sweet as Joey Molland's band is Badfinger, but it's about as close as you're going to get.

They are 1 of only 3 bands that I never got to see because they rarely if ever got to Wisconsin - The other 2 bands I will never see are the original Queen and Led Zeppelin line-ups. Raspberries used to be on this list, but then of course the magical reunion happened!

Besides the obviously great "Desolation Boulevard", my other favorite by Sweet is "Give Us A Wink".

My all time favorite band and it fills me with delight that I have an opportunity to hear a band playing some of all time favorites live after 15 years when I got to experience Andy's Sweet.

I got to hear about the Eric/Sweet tour from both sides and niether of the 2 had no love for each other.

They were a nasty, insecure bunch of wankers who thought they were the Second Coming of Led Zep. They wouldn't even speak to us. We'd all be sitting at the airport gate and we'd say "hi" to them, and they wouldn't look at us. Too busy posing. They thought they were REALLY HEAVY, and took themselves WAY too seriously. Half their act was on tape, including the big "drum solo" (blech). Then they'd get up onstage and play "Fox On The Run." What a joke.

Well yes they had their major successes with the Chinn / Chapman songs, but their output post "Desolation Blvd", had some really strong songs - all written by the band. Personally I prefer the albums "Off the Record" and "Level Headed" (featuring "Love Is Like Oxygen") to the albums with Chinn / Chapman that preceded them.
