MJ Posted July 26, 2007 Share Posted July 26, 2007 I just got a copy of Don Kirshner's Rock Concert from 1974 with the Edgar Winter Group with Rick Derringer, and the first song played is Free Ride with Dan Hartman singing - I just love that song - it has yet another memorable riff at the beginning. Brioohs Posted July 27, 2007 Share Posted July 27, 2007 I haven't seen that performance in years, but I do remember it succeeded in getting me to go out and purchase The EWG's at that time current album "Shock Treatment" as they did a few songs from that album during the show ("Do Like Me," "Easy Street," "River's Risin'") and I seem to recall them playing one of Derringer's album tracks as well ("Teenage Love Affair"). Edgar Winter really assembled a diverse band for that one, and with Hartman and Montrose they were bound to get some first rate rockers and some great pop songs. I go all the way back to Johnny's first Columbia records album...saw him at the Toronto Pop Festival in '68. He was great. David Clayton Thomas introduced me to him. Edgar? Started buying his stuff back in the 'White Trash' days...and THAT was some pretty powerful music.Both of them Excellent. Rick Derringer too...all the way back to his time with the McCoys...which I also loved. Free Ride is a VERY nifty little ditty...although not typical of the 'sound' over the long haul. I had the pleasure of knowing him back in the 70s, through his association with Steve Paul/Blue Sky Records, and the Winter Brothers. Dan had an amazing gift in the studio, and a fantastic voice. He is primarily remembered as a disco artist, and those classic dance hits are still amazing to listen to (Instant Replay, Relight My Fire, This Is It, etc.)I've been searching high and low for a single he did called "Boogie All Summer" and even got stiffed on an ebay deal for it a few weeks ago. Awesome show!!! I have also seen Rick Derringer as a solo artist, many, many times. Pick up his new live DVD, It is very good. Also,if you can find the CD for his album,Guitars and Woman from 1979. Great pop music. 2 songs by Rick Nielsen from Cheap Trick. The album also features Neil Geraldo, Pat Benatar's guitarist and husband.
