Cozmik
"Under the Covers, Vol. I" I think this comes out tomorrow. It sounds like a power pop gem. Great selection of covers (Beatles, Dylan, Beach Boys, Left Banke & lots more).
Tom
I absolutetly love Sweet's music. Lyrically and musically interesting. Demanding of the listener....
marvin
In 2003, Matthew formed a band with Shawn Mullins and Pete Droge, called "The Thorns." I absolutely adored their one and only cd and it's blend of CS&N, Beach Boys, Eagles, vocal styles. In the same year, the band performed as street corner singers on the show "American Dreams", and they sang "The Warmth of the Sun."Marv
JohnO
I've just listened to "Under The Covers Vol. 1". IMO, it's a must have for anyone on this list. Great covers and an incredibly excellent selection of songs. And they're all fairly well known songs, aside from The Marmalade's "I See The Rain", which was a hit in the UK, but not here. Susanna & Matthew pretty much stick to the original versions (except for Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue", which they pop up a but), but their vocal arrangements here are just so damn good! I especially dug "The Kids Are Alright", "Care of Cell #44" (Zombies), and my favorite Left Banke song, "She May Call You Up Tonight". They even make two old Neil Young chestnuts from Everybody Knows This Is Nowehere ("Cinnamon Girl" and title track) sound fresh! If they choose to delve into the early 70's for Volume 2, I'd recommend "Let's Pretend"....
Eric Carmen
I exchanged a couple of emails with Susanah after Ken Sharp told me they were seriously considering giving "Go All The Way" a try. I'm not surprised it didn't make the record, heck, it almost didn't make OUR record! It's a really hard one to pull off. ec
sllvnbil
Hey Marvin, I also love the Thorns CD!!! I bought that CD about a month before my Dad passed away. That CD helped me thru a hard time. Especially the song "Among The Living", reminds me of my father. It's amazing how music can help you thru a time like that! About a month after my mother passed away, Brian Wilson's "Imagination" CD came out. Same thing with that album, it really got me thru some rough times. Especially the song "Lay Down Burden". My parents were really cool "rock n roll " parents! They both loved the Rolling Stones & the Beatles. My mother's favorite Stones song was 'Rip This Joint" from "Exile on Main St". My dad's was "Far Away Eyes". My hat's off to both of them for letting a certain 13 year old get into the Rock n Roll business!!
Matthew C. Clark
I would love to see Matthew & Susanne do the remake of the Poppy Family's (Terry & Susan Jacks) 1971 song "Where Evil Grows" on Volume 2. Matt
ira
I always thought Susanna had a "Sound" but that she was cute and gimmicky.(I only knew the "Bangles" singles.)On these clips she really sounds like a very engaging performer.-Ira. popdude
Matthew Sweet's "You Don't Love Me" (from his breakthrough disc, 1991's GIRLFRIEND) is one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful songs you'll ever hear...

seattlesteve
They are very good, I think. I picked up on The Thorns when they were promoting their album, and did a couple songs acoustically at the radio station here in town, very good harmonies.Have to catch Mathew and Susannah on Leno tonight.I always thought The Kids Are Alright would make a terrific Raspberries cover, maybe alternate it with Can't Explain, or put it in their back pocket for that second encore of covers. I just wanted to add, I have her doing a killer live version of Bad Company's "Feel Like Makin'Love". I have no idea where I got it from, I taped it off of some TV show roughly about 10 years ago... marvin
I find it odd that with the plethora of songs to cover, they choose to cover two Neil Young/Crazy Horse songs on the same disc.Marv

On the Rainy Day album there were two Neil covers too: "Flying On The Ground Is Wrong" and "On The Way Home." Susannah adds some gorgeous backups on "Flying..." JohnO
Per the liner notes, the duo wanted to cover one of the two Neil Y songs, but couldn't make up their minds, so they just did both. Kinda disappointing that they chose one for Leno last night, though...I was hoping they'd do "I See The Rain", as it's the least known of the covers...and a great song, to boot. (The original was allegedly Jimi Hendrix's favorite 45 at the time....as M&S point out in the liner notes.....at least they did ISTR and not Marmalade's best known US hit, "Reflections Of My LIfe", also a great song....) JohnO
Yep, it's on his "Cool and Gone" CD.....and, unless I'm mistaken, there may be 2 versions of "Reflections" on the Japanese version of "Cool & Gone"....one as a bonus alternate version, I think (but I could be thinking of the wrong song)
