marvin
Well I'd say hitting #5 on the Billboard charts certainly qualifies as a "sizeable hit." I'm pretty certain it didn't get much airplay in my area or I would remember it. I lived for Top 40 AM radio in the 1970's.
Kirk
It was on the playlists for L.A. radio stations.
blackhawkpat
Here's song that I always crank up on the few times it gets played on the radio nowadays. This video is from a television show in Chicago in 1981 (quality not too hot, but performance outstanding) called "Soundstage". I used to have this on videotape, probably still do somewhere in the house, and watched it often. How they let the lead singer, Glenn Shorrock, leave this group was beyond me. Now, 28 years later, they are touring under the name of Gobble, Birttles, and Shorrock, as he has returned. Here's The Little River Band with "Lonesome Loser" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BdJnbTYTzk
TOMMY TUNES
'I've Found Someone Of My Own' was a pretty sizeable hit...It's a personal favorite that I've posted here before...to little reaction. Good TUNE as I recall. Haven't heard it in a long time. Will have to get on a computer that doesn't block out myspace and other similar sites. I have all their albums going back to the early 1970's. They were quite successful, in terms of radio airplay, in Canada, with many hits. blackhawkpat
Marv:Any ideas why they aren't using LRB as their name any longer? I'd assume it has something to do with the record label owning the name or something or other members not in this project. I have heard they were bigger in Canada than in the US. Also, do you know the story on Shorrock? I have heard that he quit and I have heard he was fired at their peak of fame.
marvin
Pat ironically, before you posted "Lonesome Loser", I was going to post a link to "Cool Change" or "Happy Anniversary." I think that both these songs were sizeable hits in the U.S.The LRB went through a few changes over the years, while somehow still maintaining their 'sound.' Not sure what the latest is on Shorrock or the band's inability to use the LRB name. I'll try to get some info, but maybe our friends Muzza and Kiwi can provide info.In the meantime, I consider LRB's "Best Of" album to be one of the finest "Best Of" albums out there. marvin
I went to the LRB website as well as Glen Shorrock's website to try and get more info. The LRB still exist, but without any of the original members. In fact I don't think that any of the current members are even Australian! The key members (Shorrock, Birtles, and Gobble) having no connection with the current version of LRB, perform under their own names, yet they do perform LRB material. blackhawkpat
Today's forgotten Top 40 song from me is by a band that put out three albums with their original lineup, had some top notch pop singles, but people never "got" the rest of the albums, started fighting amongst themselves, changed some members and put out a fourth album with critical acclaim, but nobody bought it. They have currently reunited and are touring. It's by a band called Rasp......whoops!While all of the above is strangely coincidental to our favorite band, the group I am speaking of was comprised of some former members of the Flying Burrito Brothers, the Byrds, Spirit, Jo Jo Gunne (hey, who wasn't in THAT band, eh?) and some other heavy sounding groups, but put out some pure pop stuff when together. While I couldn't find a youtube of the actual 45 I'm speaking of, I did find a live clip that sounds quite good, though I do believe the latest touring band does not include many original members, but what a sweet, sweet mullett on the bass player!I had this record on a 45 that I got from Burger King! Here's Firefall with "You Are The Woman" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnvWCrMT9TA
blackhawkpat
BTW, I saw this band once open for Fleetwood Mac in Chicago and I wonder if that was the famous rock and roll night that Stevie and Christine went searching for our own James here? James, tell the truth?
marvin
I have Firefall's "Best Of" album. The two main guys in Firefall have a Beatles covers album out right now.
blackhawkpat
Have you ever heard of the trivia game "The Six Degress of Kevin Bacon"? This thread is becoming it with all the bands that swapped members. Last night, I found out that LRB's Glenn Shorrock put out a Beatles tribute record! marvin
One of my favourite songs from the late 1980's was "You're The Voice" by John Farnham, formerly of the LRB. I don't imagine the song hit anywhere other than Europe (it was a smash!), and in Mtl.
marvin
Here's one that even though I still hear quite often, I don't believe I've ever seen a video:Gerry Rafferty and Stealer's Wheel, "Stuck In the Middle With You" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMrm7ZQ0aMA
blackhawkpat
I had that 45 as a kid. Gerry Rafferty really hit it big as a solo artist with "Bakers Street" shortly after this. Good choice, Marv!My pick for today is a great little ballad by a band of studio musicians that decided to form a group after playing with such heavy hitters as Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, and Sonny and Cher. A few have since worked with that guy that sang "All By Myself", what was his name again?I have a funny little story about the song in that when I was a youngster, always playing bar gigs, I met a young lass in the bar the night before my band was playing there. We hit it off quite well and spent several hours together. She told me she loved this song, so I spent the entire next day forcing my band to learn it for that night's gig.In the old days, we used to play close to eighty songs a night, so it wasn't odd to do a few repeats over an eight hour evening. IN the first set, this guy wanders up to the stage and asks to see our setlist. He asks me to do the song and dedicate it to him and his wife. I figure, it'll be good for us to run through the tune before my new love shows up and hears it, right? So, he gives me the info, and I say, "this goes out to Tom and Kathy". I start playing the intro on the piano and sing the first line "If I had another chance..." All of a sudden, I look at the dance floor and he is dancing with the girl I was with the prior night! She looks at me and kind of throws her hands up like "what are you going to do?" DOINK!Ahh, the things we young musicians have to go through......Here's Toto with "I Won't Hold You Back" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2v2lyGiYPlk

Danny S.
I always liked Ambrosia too. "Holdin on to Yesterday" charted on AM radio, and musically speaking I felt it was one of their best works. blackhawkpat
Pauline Matthews was a young singer that backed up Dusty Springfield. Eventually, she became the first white artist to be signed to all black label Tamla Motown, but with the exception of a few European singles, didn't have much success. She changed her name and a few years later, caught the eye of a guy named Reg Dwight, who also had changed his name previously to Elton John and had huge success. Elton inked her to his Rocket records label and she had a smash, first as a soloist, and then later another that was a duet with him. Man, I loved Rocket Records....EJ, Neil Sedaka, the Hudson Brothers, and this performer.......Here's Kiki Dee with "I've Got The Music In Me" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JxCDsD5VYI&feature=related
marvin
Ah Kiki! We do that song in our band. Nice find Pat - but I always thought that Rare Earth was the first white act to sign with Motown. Here's YOUR long-lost Top 40 hit for the day: Written by Cat Stevens, recorded by a zillion artists, the Tremloes' "Here Comes My Baby" - and live to boot! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bswxaeyQDFI
blackhawkpat
I believe you are correct about Rare Earth being first on Motown, but Kiki (or rather Pauline) was the first on Tamla Motown (Stevie Wonder's division). Remember that ugly yellow and brown label?Never knew that Cat Stevens wrote this tune. You should teach a course in college on music history, my friend. I always thought I knew alot, but you are like a walking encyclopedia!I may be back later with a few more, as I'm trying to contribute one every day, but will be out of town for the next few days at a basketball game. Kirk
Poor Rare Earth. Always getting shuffled to the back so Raspberries would get more exposure at the record store
Muzza
When I watched the Tremelos I couldn't help thinking how much fun they looked like they were having. I don't see that as much with artists today. Maybe that's what missing a lot of the time.Muzza
