sterling
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXOVrONBPCc&mode=related&search= I recently obtained a copy of both the soundtrack and the DVD of "That Thing You Do". An old college friend of mine gave it to me. I had seen the movie once many years ago. WOW...the music is great! Someone said that The Fountains of Wayne wrote the music....is this true?Check out the video above of the Wheezetones from Lincoln, Nebraska doing their version of That Thing You Do. Yes...it blows me away. It cannot be that easy to do those harmonies, et all...but they sound very close to the real thing. They also have a lot of music on YouTube and their own website. These guys are very good.Phil
hollies65
Yes the brains behind FOW did write the music for the movie. The song is pretty simple to play...as someone always around here always has at the bottom of their posts..."good vocals make great songs better". DeanTylerVO
I LOVE that movie and the whole story rings truein many ways in the real old ways of having a "local" regional type of hit and how it gets bigger from there..seen the movie MANY times, loved the "hit" song from the movie and it indeedmakes you want to pick up a bass or guitar and learn it..it is VERY catchy. marvin
Hollies65 we played "TTYD" in a band that I was in when I lived in Mtl. It may be "pretty simple to play", but the harmonies aren't quite as simple to pull together. Marv
hollies65
Yeah...that was my point...the vocals would be the difficult part. You know ...I have seen hundreds of good cover bands...and only ONE did a decent version of a Hollies song...,'Look Thru Any Window' a tough song[That 12 string intro is tougher than it sounds] and the vocals.....The band who did the great job...The Secret..Wally Bryson's group around 1980. They also did a GREAT version of 'My Back Pages'. Most impressive to me ,they played both as requests...from me.
Bessieboo
I loved "That Thing You Do" movie. It was my turn to chose the flick and it was the only thing playing that nothing was crashing, blasting, blood spattering, or mutant slimming. So my husband was sure it was a chick flick, he even had to admit I WAS RIGHT, it was a good night. tgp
Mike Viola of the Candy Butchers sings lead on most of the songs.
Paul Davie
Ironic this thread was posted just today...my band just learned this song and played it out for the first time over the weekend. It got great response. It really takes some time getting used to playing those unexpected minors and naughty chords...and it took us an HOUR to dissect the parts. Just as tough as a Beach Boys or Raspberries song! We're blessed with four singers in the band, so our version (IMHO) is even closer to the record than The Wheeztones (who are limited as a four piece with three singers, but cover the harmonies very well). They play it a bit fast. Adam Schlesinger from FofW was the genius behind this faux pop gem. They are one of my favorite bands of today BECAUSE he can write Beatles/'berries jangly power-pop like "Stacey's Mom", "Hey! Julie", "Red Dragon Tattoo" and "Leave The Biker".And Hollies65 - hopefully someday my band can play in your area...we do an awesome Carrie Anne, Bus Stop & He Ain't Heavy. TheScentLady
After seeing the movie, I couldn't get that song out of my head. I couldn't remember the last time I got so excited about a song. I HAD to have it & the next day ran out to buy the soundtrack just for that one song.(It was a bonus that the rest of the soundtrack is terrific.) When I got the CD, I must have played the title track a dozen times. I don't think I'd EVER done that for ANY record! I thought the song was going to be a huge hit & was so disappointed that it wasn't. Interesting note about the song. When discussing that year's Best Song Academy Award nominees, Roger Ebert said TTYD should win because without the song, there is no movie. Early Wynn
Love that movie. Adam Schlesinger wrote the song and asked Mike Viola to sing on the demo. When they selected the song for the movie, they liked Mike's voice so much they asked him to sing it for the final version. That's a movie I've watched a thousand times and never once got tired of it. Especially like the scene where they play "That Thing You Do" at the talent contest.
MAM
One of my favorite movies for sure. We have 3 different bands in Erie who claim that the movie is based on them. Only Mr. Hanks knows for sure.I love the scene where Faye & TB Player are running down State Street (yes, State Street looked just like that back in the 60's)after hearing the song on the radio the first time. I can relate to the excitement they felt. Back when I was in a country band, we had a local "hit" in the mid 80's and I remember it being played on the radio the very first time. By that time I was in the automotive field for my day job, and was pumping gas when it came on. I told everyone at the pumps that we weren't selling gas for the next 10 minutes. That way I was able to head into the office & crank up the radio. Small time stuff for sure, but it was still pretty exciting. Absolutely great movie. Good ol' Erie, PA. popdude
They asked for submissions for the title track while they were in pre-production, and several established power pop acts (such as Dwight Twilley and Velvet Crush) ended up recording tunes titled "That Thing You Do" that didn't make the movie. The State Street scenes in the movie were actually filmed in Orange, California, about 15 minutes from here! AnniekNY
I LOVE that movie - it is a must watch every time it's on. My daughter has the soundtrack on her ipod!
Cozmik
I've been wanting to get a DVD of that movie but I'm holding off until May 8 when a director's cut DVD set comes out.

Brioohs
One of the bonus features for the upcoming Directors Cut DVD is about the different songs submitted for the title tune. I hope they'll actually include audio content (and LOTS OF IT).Some other info and specs are currently available on DVD website The Digital Bits. May 8 is looking like fun (same date brings DVD releases of Ringo on Soundstage and The Knack live at World Cafe)!
