Poor4Life
Well, so far I've listened to it once and I'm not impressed at all. The only song that stuck with me was "Dance Tonight". Some of the lyrics leave ALOT to be desired. Especially on "Feet in the Clouds", where he sings the line "I find it very very very very very very hard" not once but FOUR times! I found it very very very very very very hard to listen to, and was ready to hit the skip button on the CD player!I'll definetly be giving it another listen, but right now I'm putting this one in the same class as "Driving Rain', "Press to Play", and "Wild Life" (which aint saying much)...Jeff
marvin
I got the disc today. Haven't studied the lyrics yet, but after one abreviated listen, I've got no problem with the melodies. Marv
marvin
I've had a chance to listen to the entire album 2x now, and putting all biases aside, musically I believe it is as strong as anything Paul has released in the last 20 years. Lyrically it leaves something to be desired.Marv
chris hess
got it today, listening for about 1 hour..there is some fantastic chord changes,melodies,arrangements,production..etc..."the end of the end" to me is breathtaking musically and lyrically.."only mama knows" is great too..lyric wise this time around,he's actually answering alot of his own questions ..which paul tends to do..with the questions that is!! but NOW he's giving answers to this now..he's getting more personal at this stage in his life..that's my impression so far..lol,chris
Raspyrock
Faced w/ mortality a lot more will open up.
seattlesteve
Maybe I'm wrong, but Paul and Eric are similar. Their gift is their ear and a sense of melody. They both, right now, have hundreds of wordless songs in their heads. There are a million poets out there that couldn't write a 3 chord jingle. The difference. After so many songs Paul is simply out of words, Eric, conversly is very articulate as his post demonstrate, and nothing gets out the door because it's not perfect, could be the rhyme, syncopation, etc.
marvin
Just to elaborate on my statement that the "lyrics leave something to be desired", I only say this because there seems to be a lot of focus on McCartney's lyrics these days given what has happened in his personal life. Some of the lyrics on the new album are trite, but then there are others that are pretty revealing. That's the way that Paul has always been. Remember this is a guy who has written songs with titles like "C Moon", "Soily", "Uncle Albert", and "Mr Bellamy" (from the new album), to name a few, while also writing "Too Many People", "My Brave Face" and "The End of the End" (from the new album). When it comes to Paul's songs, the melodies are always what I listen to first. That's just the way it's always been with me. Marv

chris hess
well, after listening again to it,he can't or will never recreate the years w/the beatles..but i'll take his music over alot of "artists" in today's world..he has always had throwaway songs on most of his solo carreer..as did all the beatles solo..i'm gonna enjoy this cd till the berries come out..lol,chris
Poor4Life
Well, I tried listening to it again. My first opinion hasn't changed. I'm terribly disappointed in this album. There's absolutely nothing that sticks with me. In fact the third time I tried listening to it I turned it off "Vintage Clothes". I wont be playing it anymore than I did "Driving Rain"...Jeff
marvin
Jeff your opinion is certainly valued so I'm curious as to what you don't like about the album? I'm really sold on the melodies, and there is only one song that I don't care too much for: "Gratitude."Marv
Lew Bundles
Keep listening...If you guys are indeed Mccartney fans, then I think that you are missing the boat on this one...Fellas, forget lyrics...They are not important to a song...If they were, orchestras would never play the songs without the words and Beethoven would have penned a few...This whole nonsense about relevant lyrics is nonsense...Why? listen to U2 lyrics sometime...They are as banal and contrite as anybody's..."Hello,Hello"...If Bono wasnt a singer, he would be driving a forklift...It makes absolutely no difference to me what he's saying...He has no relevance to his point of view other than they are the opinion of a guy singing a song..."She MOves IN Mysterious Ways"...Who cares?...Maybe I didnt get it, but how do you dismantle an Atomic Bomb?...Please...Go drive a taxi... Lew Bundles
Mccartney gets knocked for songs just because they are not "Beatle" tunes...If he had written Rocky Racoon,Ob-La-Di,When I'm 64,I Will or Good Day Sunshine as a solo act, he would have gotten murdered by the critics instead of lauded...These songs and MANY other Beatle classics could have fit in on a number of his solo lp's and he would have gotten hammered for it...What's the difference between "All Together Now" and "C Moon"...Not much... marvin
Good points Lew. It took me 1 1/2 listens to fall in love with the new cd. I really think it's a superb effort and well deserving of the (mostly) good reviews it's been receiving.Marvp.s. Rumor has it that it will enter the Billboard charts at #1, thanks to Starbucks' over-the-top promotion last week.

marvin
From Billboard:QUOTEPaul McCartney earns his third best charting debut since SoundScan began tracking data in 1991 with "Memory Almost Full," which sold 161,000. This album marks the former Beatle's first effort through Starbucks' Hear Music label after a 45-year association with EMI. McCartney's only higher debuts came with 2002's "Back in the U.S. Live 2002" (No. 8, 224,000) and 2001's "Wingspan: Hits and History" (No. 2, 221,000).ENDQUOTE
BadfingerBarb
I'm still not too crazy about it but I don't hate it. For me, I think most McCartney albums are filled with highs and lows. The albums I tend to like best have more highs than lows. This album is sort of flat with a few potholes and a bump here and there. There's nothing on it that I love but there are a couple of songs I can't stand.
Lew Bundles
But "Shine On" is great, Barb...Isnt it?
chris hess
think about how many songs he has written in his carreer..it's mind boggling to me he can still do it,maybe not as effective as the beatles or early solo stuff, but i'll take his good 5 songs anyday off a new release than the crap that's being offered out there(i really feel sad for the younger generation!! to me .."the end of the end".."only mama knows",and "that was me" are the best things he's done in a while..makes me happy again...nnnooww..the berries release..i'm so giddy i can't stand it!! as u are too i'm sure!!!,lol, chris

JCraft
I love the new CD. Personally I think it is as close to a new Beatles album as we will ever hear. I am always amazed at comments about the lyrics written to a song. How do we decide what is a strong lyric, or what is a weak lyric? (I Want You--She's So Heavy, strong or weak?) What I love most about the CD is it is a bit of a through back. I mean, isn't that why we are all wetting ourselves over the "new" Raspberries release? Obviously EC is a little more picky than the rest of us when it comes to standards for his songs. PM just gives you what he has and says like it or not, here it comes. This one I like a lot.JIMPS--listen to the lyrics to End of the End
