3. "100 Days, 100 Nights" - Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

4. "The Snake" - Al Wilson

This is spooky. I posted that on Monday at 2 minutes after midnight. And now I just found out that Al Wilson died that day. I hope the others are all OK!

Too tough to limit this to 5 and then there's always the question...what criteria constitutes "soul?"

This list is subject to change depending on time of month, moon phase and Patron insane

Martha Reeves and the Vandellas: Heatwave

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings:100 Days, 100 Nights

Smokey Robinson and the Miracles: You Really Got a Hold on Me

Bill Withers: Aint no Sunshine when She's Gone

Four Tops: Baby I need your Lovin

Sam Cooke: Cupid

Oops...that's 6..I could go on and on and on but I'll stop here for now spin

Just curious if many people here listen to recent/modern soul music at all....aside from Sharon Jones being mentioned a few times, everything here's probably 30 years old or older.

Recent excellent soul CDs, and I'll restrict this to just the last year -

Bettye LaVette - Scene Of The Crime - Recorded in Muscle Shoals and backed by Southern White trash rockers the Drive-By Truckers, this was definitely one of the best releases of 2007. Bettye's in her early 60s now, but she's, IMO, probably the best soul singer alive today. She covers tunes by George Jones, Frankie Miller, Don Henley, Eddie Hinton, Elton John - none of them slouches - and makes them her own, with an incredibly expressive voice that sounds like broken glass and cheap muscatel.

Ryan Shaw - This Is Ryan Shaw - Also released in 2007, this guy's 26 or 27 years old, and a total throwback to Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett, etc. I think he got nominated for a Grammy for one of his original tunes on this, his debut album. Great to see that some singers are still remembering and doing 60s soul!

Ellis Hooks - Another Saturday Morning. This guy's big in Europe. His '07 release isn't one of his best efforts, but he's capable of channeling Wilson Pickett, circa '64 or '65....'nuff said.

The Solution - Will Not Be Televised. Scott Morgan's big soul band from Sweden. Scott was The Rationals' singer in the 60s in Detroit, then co-fronted Sonics Rendezvous Band in the 70s, with Fred Sonic Smith of the MC5. Scott also fronts several rock bands (Hydromatics, Powertrane), but he's a great, great blue-eyed soul shouter. This latest is The Solution's 2nd CD, and is mostly covers of tunes by the likes of Ike & Tina, The Staples Singers, Albert King, Clarence Carter, Peggy Scott/Jojo Benson, and others.

Eli "Paperboy" Reed & The True Loves - Roll With You - This actually isn't released until 4/29, but I have a promo copy. Eli is a 23-24 year old Jewish kid from Boston who can sound like Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding & a young Paul Rodgers, all in the same song! A friend of mine saw this band at SXSW this year, and says they'll be huge...assuming 60s soul can still sell. The kid ain't Steve Cropper or Eddie Hinton in the songwriting department yet, but this is an excellent debut!

Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple - Not 60s soul, but kinda 80s R&B/rock/soul in the vein of Prince or The Time, with sampling and rap tossed in...but these guys kick major ass live, and their singer Cee-Lo Green has a world class soul voice. I prefer this new one to their debut from '06 that had the huge hit ("Crazy")...and anyone who samples from Sam The Sham's "The Hair On My Chinny-Chin-Chin" can't be bad!!!
