What in the world is the matter with those $!@$&@# Sex Pistols?! eek They rejected being honored with induction into the R&R HOF! What a slap in the face! What arrogance! Who do they think they are?! angry

Raspberries deserves to be inducted far more than they ever could hope to. They *will* be inducted one day, and will accept it with their hallmark class and grace.

Well, if you're going to have a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - and personally, I think the whole idea is pretty silly - then the Sex Pistols have to be in there, not so much for their recorded output, but for their influence on other artists and the fact that they helped clean out pop music's clogged arteries in the mid-'70s. If it weren't for the Pistols, Ramones, Clash and others of their ilk, Boston might be on their 15th album by now. eek

The punkers not only made the stodgy, boring, old corporate rockers---Hi, Rush!---quickly seem irrelevant, but they also opened the door for "new wave" (whatever that means) acts such as Talking Heads, The Cars and Blondie to arrive on the scene.

Besides, they're punk rockers - they're SUPPOSED to be arrogant. That's part of their act, and always has been. Like 'em or not, they deserve to be in the Hall.

Very eloquently said, Popdude. I wish I could have said it as well. But that's why you get paid to write and I write for yucks.

But I will miss seeing them that night. It would have been the greatest moment to date on that awards show.

Darlene,

I wouldn't be too hard on the Pistols. In true punk rock fashion I think their fans would have been upset with them if they actually would have shown up and accepted. Punk rock picked up the gauntlet that rock and roll dropped when it came to being anti-establishment and the Pistols are just being true to their punk-rock selves.

Black Sabbath was another one who flat out told the HOF not to even bother with nominating them and for quite a few years they weren't. Now, since all that is Ozzy is popular again, Sabbath has been nominated and they have already said that, while I think they will appear at the ceremony, they will not be performing.

Many (myself included) feel that the whole HOF is nothing more than a popularity contest. There are many who should be inducted (Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, KISS, Cheap Trick and our beloved Raspberries to name but a few) that, chances are, will NEVER be inducted simply because they are not the critics darlings.

Shoot, as a Clevelander I have a right to b*tch about the HOF because, while we have the HOF, the induction ceremonies aren't even held here in Cleveland! We only had them here one time and one time only and ever since the only way you could see the enitre event was to go to the HOF itself and watch it on their video screens. Where's the justice in that?

OK, I'm stepping off my soapbox now because it's past my bedtime... smile

Cheers,

JS

The greatest has to be the late, great Dee Dee Ramone's acceptance speech during The Ramones' induction: "Hi, I'm Dee Dee Ramone, and I'd like to congratulate myself and thank myself and give myself a big pat on the back. Thank you, Dee Dee. You're very wonderful. I love you."

Now THAT'S rock and roll.

I remember that. It was hysterical. This year I still have Blondie to look forward to. I'm sure they'll accept their award. They never worried about selling out for they have "Hearts of Glass".

After all that's been said, I still think there is something intrinsically wrong with arrogance, punk arrogance or not! I'm just not impressed with them. There's something intrinsically wrong with punk rock as well. Sorry, that's just me.

Than they've done their job... and it should not be any other way...

Amen Johnny Rotten...

Some bands sell out and some bands retain their integrity... the R&R Hall of Fame stands against basically everything the Pistols rallied against and set out to destroy... (and long before lame Sid joined)...

I am so happy that they've not cow towed to this Jaan Wenner blowfest where yawners like Jackson Browne are inducted before the New York Dolls or Alice Cooper

gurgling bloody mess

The only thing Jackson Browne should be inducted into is a home for the terminally boring.

And what the f*&k is Miles Freaking Davis doing being inducted into a ROCK AND ROLL Hall of Fame?

What a joke.

the next generation in music is usually "punk" to the old timers...having said that...THE SEX PISTOLS punk act looks a little silly coming from now middle aged men...it was the attitude of youth that brought forth punk...that same punk act coming from THE SEX PISTOLS today is not so much revolutionary...but reactionary...i'm talking about their reaction to their HALL OF FAME honors...their music will always be what it is...a breath of fresh air that is still shaking up the rock world.

Sing Alleluia!

Popdude is back. Now where's Raspberrywine and Lew Bundles.

By the way, Don't even think about putting me on no desert island without "Never Mind The Bollocks".

Well, frankly, after Mr. Lydon's comments over the years about what an absolute farce the R&R HOF is in the first place, I'd have been even more shocked had he shown up AND acted graciously! More power to him....it's about time somebody gave a big finger to that institution......which still won't stop me from visiting it to see all of the cool memorabilia next weekend, BTW.......

I guess I'm a bit puzzled over Raspberries fans who have been wailing and gnashing their teeth over Eric & Co. being excluded from the HOF being that concerned about anybody dissing the institution.....as stated above, it's about time someone did it!!!

I don't agree with what's going on with the R&RHOF. It *is* rather a joke, when Miles Davis makes it. It's like all of the huge name actors and comedians who didn't make the Juilliard "cut." So many of those cut went on to become megastars that people who were making "the cut" were really nervous: "Does making the cut mean I"ll NEVER be a success?!"

That being said, I would bet money that the Sex Pistols will each display the honor on their mantel at home alone, when nobody is looking.

What kind of integrity is THAT?!

if Johnny has it displayed it will be shattered in bits & glued back w/ excrement... Jonesy, who plays the 'Berries on his radio show (along w/ Small Faces) will never endorse such a scam...

Being "Cut" can be the badge of honor which initiates the GREATS to become trailblazers... John Lennon and George Harrison included...

I would bet a lot more money that they never receive their awards! A little known fact about the R&R HOF - recipients have to pay for their plaques/awards; they have to pay, to the tune of over $1,000 a seat, to attend the ceremony, and any of their guests also have to pay to show up.

A really class organization.....

(This info, I got personally from Phil May & Dick Taylor of The Pretty Things....who were asked by Led Zeppelin to attend their induction ceremony - the Pretties were the first band that LZ signed to their Swan Song label. Per Dick, "we could barely afford to attend it....and this, after we had donated guitars and other goodies to the Hall of Fame for their exhibits!")

JohnO,

Thanks so much for your valuable information and opinion based on fact not personal opinions/predjudices. You've added some valuables insight to the RARHOF proceedings.

I prefer The Clash to the Sex Pistols, but I don´t think punk is bad.In the middle 70´s prog bands became boring and pretentious and then punk was a youth revolution..the most punk thing for me now is talking about first and second Eric´s albums,(I still don´t know Tonight You´re mine)and imagining Eric produced by Rick Rubin.Even Led Zeppelin said punk was good in the middle seventies.
