Latest Beatles pitch...

Jerry,

That would be "Hello Good Buy." Get it? "Hello Good BUY." They're using it in print ads, too. Clever, huh?

For some reason, I got a HUGE kick (like a lot of you did) out of seeing "All By Myself" used in that GM commercial. It was like a validation to the masses: great song by a great artist who deserves more attention. Most important, Eric had a say in it, and, I believe, he got to to see the creative before it aired (correct me if I'm wrong!). But "Hello Good Buy" and "All You Need Is Luvs"... it just seems wrong.

I do appreciate that millions of younger folks might get turned on to great songs via these commercial jingles. (As in, "That's great! I wanna hear the original!") Also, who's to say that John Lennon, IF he were alive, and IF he had control of his songs, wouldn't go ahead and sign off on "All You Need Is Luvs"? (I doubt he would, but nobody knows for sure.)

However, these are Lennon & McCartney classics, and they weren't meant as jingles, and the artists aren't approving them....

Next thing you know, we'll be seeing "It Won't Be Long" used in a Viagra commercial....

(Hey---that's not bad!) (I hope Jacko's not reading EC.com....)

Of course, I have to remember that when we hear Beatles classics as product-pitching jingles, it's all a matter of cold, hard business. Company X thinks it can sell Y% more products by spending $ZZZ on licensing a Lennon & McCartney song for a new marketing campaign. The licensor makes a tidy profit without doing anything, aside from administrative tasks and red-tape approvals.

To those parties (licensor and licensee), Lennon & McCartney songs aren't "art." They're tools. The licensor can sit back and grant usage rights as often as it wants. (I'm not sure it's Jackson alone; I believe he's a co-owner of a company -- Sony? -- that bought the L & M catalog.)

Those of us who love the Beatles might object, but that's about all we can do.

Luvs aside, we'll always know that John Lennon wrote "All You Need Is Love" in the midst of the Vietnam War, and that the Beatles turned it into an event, performing it for "One World" for broadcast all over the planet. It was an envelope-pushing effort: the first "global TV link," simulcast to 26 countries and watched by 300-350 million people.

Whether or not John wrote it specifically for "One World" doesn't matter (in the Beatles' Anthology DVD, George said he wasn't sure; Paul said he didn't think so; Ringo was sure he did). Either way, it was a great message delivered in a cutting-edge form.

And now? Now it serves to catch the ear of parents who are looking for the right diapering product.... Stinks, doesn't it?

Anyway, here... have a look:
