Lee Marshall
John O...Tell me more about Roky Erickson. Quite like his music/his sound/his voice. How is he sounding these days? Are his feet anywhere near being on solid ground? VERY cool that you had a chance to catch him...kinda close to home for him I guess.I saw two REGGAE innovators/guitar legends on separate occaisions in '06. Ernest Ranglin...and Lynn Taitt. Got to M.C. both of the shows at a place called Hugh's Room here in Toronto. As a long time Ska/Rock Steady/Reggae 'follower'...these 2 guys are legends. JohnO
"How was Magic Christian live? I've got their 1st cd and loved it."Rich - I've seen MC 7 times live, and they've always been great, except for their first show in Austin (they played 4 times in all), when Cyril J. was in a very foul mood (sore throat, and he couldn't sing). They always do a couple of cool Beatles and Stones covers (Taxman, Anytime At All, Things We Said Today, Gotta Get Away), and usually toss in something by the Easybeats (Made My Bed, Gonna Have A Good Time). JohnO
"John O...Tell me more about Roky Erickson. Quite like his music/his sound/his voice. How is he sounding these days? Are his feet anywhere near being on solid ground? VERY cool that you had a chance to catch him...kinda close to home for him I guess."Lee - Roky is in great shape these days. He's moved back to Austin to be near his brother Sumner (also a musician), and he's even gotten a drivers license (his first in decades!). Two of the original Explosives, Freddie Krc and Cam King also live in Austin, and they've been backing him in all of his live shows over the past couple of years - the show I saw him at in March (Roky Erickson's Ice Cream Social....an annual Austin event the week of SXSW) was his first real full live set in ages, and he sounded great! No new songs, though....and I don't believe he's started writing again. (He's still on medication, but it's pretty mild, compared to what he's been on in the past...)2 nights later, I saw Roky & The Explosives play a short set at a party in Austin....he was introduced by "the future Governor of the great state of Texas," Kinky Friedman, who called Roky his spiritual advisor, and said he'd be in his cabinet once he was elected (!?) JohnO
Rich - Per Paul Kopf (Magic Christian's singer), their second CD, titled "Off The Hook", should be out sometime this Spring. marvin
Ted I'm just a bit better than you. I saw Gary Lewis (with Billy Sullivan) a few weeks ago, otherwise 2006 concerts would have been a big ZERO for me also.Marv
