AnniekNY Posted June 10, 2008 Share Posted June 10, 2008 I like the way he made the song his own, which is very tough to do when you have someone as beloved and iconic as Steve Perry setting the base line.I remember (probably from a Behind The Music show) that Steve perry never felt like he was part of the band. This revelation stunned his bandmates - i distinctly remember Neal Schon's face being like "WHat did he say?"Is it just me or does Jonathan Cain looked bored on the keyboards in that clip? I agree with you Danny about Steve Augeri. I have a vhs of him with Journey recorded in Vegas about 5 years ago (Directv)- he was excellent. Deen is a great singer and, yes, sounds similar to Steve Perry but they'll never let him come out from behind his kit 'cause he is such a strong , powerful drummer. Posted June 11, 2008 Share Posted June 11, 2008 If you do a search on Google; "What happened to Steve Augeri" Its a truly shocking story.He had contracted Viral laryngytis, which killed his voice. Journey had brought along their producer,and a separate board, and actually mixed Steve(Augeri) at stage right.(he actually Lip-Synched his parts(near the end of his tenure), and Deen sang the 'high stuff"..amazing story, and true according to the FOH sound people who "leaked the story".As far as Perry, He was hiking in Hawaii,fell and hurt his hip,Schon never believed him, and the fighting continued.They had been at each other's throats for some time...Thats when the quote , by Perry came out"I never felt I was a part of this band" etc etc. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

SECOND ROW CENTER, BABY!But STILL....with all due respect to the great Neal Schon...Journey has not stayed together the entire time like Heart or Cheap Trick. This new singer is a God-send to them. But I still feel one of the other bands should be the headliner...or at least rotate the order each night!I'll bet Cale (like Tony Banks of Genesis) occasionally gets tired/bored playing the same songs over and over for 25 years....especially when not being the center of attention like Neal or Phil Collins. In their box set they mention about that era of their recording career and the push for commercially friendly material. I think only a couple of songs on "Lap Of Luxury" were written by them. Heart's better "rockin'" half went to form Alias in the late 80's. Too bad for Toronto that their label pulled "What About Love" from "Get It On Credit" a couple years before Heart used it. Not a very smart decision since the song became a comeback single for Heart.For Journey, it's great that they have a singer, but I wonder if he'll fill Steve's shoes in contributing to the songwriting. John is a great songwriter, but the new album's material is not as strong as the songs on "Trial By Fire". On Steve's solo stuff, I thought "Street Talk" was good, especially "Strung Out". hbecstacy Posted June 16, 2008 Share Posted June 16, 2008 Actually, AJ, I saw Cheap Trick play a corporate event in April and they most certainly did play "The Flame."While they've been outspoken about how they didn't write it and didn't like it, it was, I believe, the biggest chart hit of their careers.For that reason, I wouldn't be surprised if they played it on the Journey tour. When I saw them in NJ in '06, they headlined and did 90 minutes. (The Fab Faux opened....how awesome a night that was!) I have to guess that with Journey AND Heart, they'll probably do 30. So like you said, the strength of the set list will be dictated by the time.In my five times seeing them in the last five years, they have ALWAYS done "The Flame" (and they admit....begrudingly). But man, when RObin hits that last note at the end, it's ALWAYS chills on the arm time!They have done "Voices" four out of five. "California Man" three out of five. And since it was released, they always play at least two songs from 'Rockford'. "the flame"...one of my absolute fave bands to say the least..its just too bad they didnt write it,they've got a huge catalogue of great originals..lol,chris..did'nt mean to get off the subject of journey by the way!! Poor4Life Posted June 18, 2008 Share Posted June 18, 2008 I actually think that Augeri sounded more like Pineda does. Sure he sounds like him on the old material, but on the new ones he doesnt. In fact by the end of the new CD he begins to sound raspy.My wife and I did an A-B-C comparison last weekend using the three DVD's we have of all three lead singers. Without her looking she was able to pick out Pineda everytime. She could pick out Augeri but it took her almost half the song to do so.Perry is supposedly working on demos from what I've heard recently. Trouble is, I think, the job takes its toll on your voice, and his was ripped up by years of constant touring and doing those songs every night, to the point he was replaced by a hard drive, and then Jeff Scott Soto, who ended up being just a temp tour fill-in.In a recent interview on MelodicRock.com, former Journey manager Herbie Herbert talked about how Steve Perry himself can't cut it anymore singing Journey songs.So now we have Pineda. Interestingly, I don't think he was the first guy they worked with ... Jeremy Hunsicker, singer of Journey Tribute band "Frontiers", got a songwriting credit on the first song on the new CD, "Never Walk Away." Imagine tolling around for years for your one big break, only to have your voice shot. I hope he can recover, I think he fit in with the band well. Steve A was working at The Gap, he gets his once-in-a-lifetime shot, and now he's replaced, just like Perry was by him.
