JohnO
On the DVD, there's footage of the Dolls playing a song that's not on the CD, called "Beauty School"....a real rocker that should have been included as one of the final 13 cuts, IMO. I just tracked down a copy of it - it's the B-side of promo (so far) pink copies of a 45 of "Dance Like A Monkey".....unfortunately, it's not on the CD single of "Dance". Wonder how many other unreleased tracks they might have in the can....
JohnO
Yet another excellent review - Classic Rock just gave the new Dolls CD 8 out of 10 stars, with the reviewer saying (and I agree) that what primarily makes this click is the quality of the new songs....they're, for the most part, comparable to the old tunes. JohnO
Yep, it sounds like a great lost 60's girls' group tune to me....and another R&B-tinged tune on the new one, "Rainbow Store", has verses that sound like a re-write of the Shangri-Las' "Give Him A Great Big Kiss" (which the Dolls and Johnny Thunders both used to do live).Speaking of the Shangri-La's, the Dolls have done a killer live version of my all-time fave Shangs' tune, "Out In The Streets," all 4 times I've seen them since the comeback. (This song's in the Rhino box set of girls' groups classics that's shaped like a hat box.) And Mary Weiss, the lead singer of the Shangri-La's is in the studio in NYC as we speak, recording a comeback album with The Reigning Sound from Memphis backing her. (NOTE: The same Reigning Sound that played the back room at Beachland after the 2nd Choir show in March.) Should be out on Norton Records either later this year or early '07. Early Wynn
I bought it last week and I've been listening non-stop. Trashy rock n roll is a good description. I like it a lot. This could be a good year for CDs. First, the NY Dolls, then Cheap Trick's Rockford, the new Gin Blossoms CD in a couple of weeks, and the new Raspberries CD/DVD on 8/14 (?). It could be a good year. Keith Nivan
Return of a long-buried post.Heard it last night front-to-back for the first time: excellent. David is in GREAT voice.Inspired me to order The David Johansen Group Live a bonus track added CD version of a promo record I had way back when. Hot guitars: Viva Johnny Rao and Thomas Trask. If you haven't heard this release visitAmazon and sample. It's great. Top of Game stuff: including a cover of "It's a Heartache."And see Killer Kane movie New York Doll : a fascinating, haunting, and interestingly enough uplifting movie all at the same time."K"
HT from Mo
Wow! JohnO! Thanks a bunch for the Raspberries reflections link! I think from some of the sound bites that'll be the next CD to add to my collection! I didn't even know that Tony Cartmill could sing! JohnO
The Dolls are getting ready to headline the next Nation-wide tour of Little Steven's Underground Garage traveling show (recent tours have included The Zombies and Shadows of Knight/Romantics, who I'm seeing next Sunday, 10/22). The NY Dolls will be playing with The Chesterfield Kings and Supersuckers, and it looks like they're starting on the West coast in early November. Tickets for their DC show (Black Cat) are supposed to be on sale today.
susana
As interesting as this talk about the Dolls is, I will quite happily tell each and every one of you that I passed on a chance to see them back in the 70's, when they played less than 2 miles from my house. And given the same choice today, I'd make the same decision all over again. Why?Because another band was playing in town, also about 2 miles from me to the west instead of that much south. That was on October 13, 1973...and the other band was the Raspberries!!Happy Anniversary to me! LOLS*
JohnO
Susana - Odds are, the Dolls that night didn't take the stage until after Eric & co. had already finished their set....so you might have been able to see both! (Every time I saw the Dolls in the 70's, I don't believe their sets started til past Midnight....)
susana
Good thought, John - but show times were nearly identical. 'Berries' opening act was scheduled to start at 7p (I just double checked my poster from the show to confirm that) and the Dolls were set for 8p, at the latest. Besides, I was still reeling for days from actually having seen the 'Berries, so there's no way I would have been able to comprehend another show...just ask a couple of people who post here! LOL
mellie
Reeling for days? Seriously now, just days? If she'd gone to the Dolls show, she would have had to miss giving her live, on-air review of the 'berries concert down at the local pop station in town. She can probably still tell you exactly what she said, too. That night has been replayed in her head over and over and over and over (and over). Muzza
Hey Folks. Today I watched a doco about Arthur (Killer) Kane and the NYD's. Until everyone starting talking about them on this board we had never heard of them here in New Zealand. It was interesting to see the doco after reading the posts about them. It was also helpful to hear snippets of their music. You may have seen the program as it was done in 2004.Muzza
Lew Bundles
By the way, I am going to see the Dolls tomorrow,(Tues.), in Providence...Has anyone seen them yet?...I went to the little Steven thing about a month ago with Shadows of Knight and the Romantics...Very quick, well paced show and the go-go girls come on and dance to classic rock in between band set-ups... JohnO
I've seen the post-comeback Dolls three times (Aug. 04 at Little Steven's Underground Garage Fest in NYC, Oct. 04 at the Fillmore, SF, and earlier this year at the 930 Club, Wash, DC), and they're excellent live! I'm also seeing them this Sunday at the Black Cat, with 4 other bands, at the Little Steven traveling show thing. While it'll be a quick-paced show, just like the other LS-sponsored shows (Zombies and Shadows of Knight/Romantics have headlined other shows this year), sadly, this also mens a shortened Dolls set, I'm sure.....(The other 4 bands will be - The Supersuckers, Chesterfield Kings, Charms, and Hall Monitors, who are local to DC, I think. The Charms played at ther Shadows/Romantics show. Both Supersuckers and C.Kings are very good live...)
Lew Bundles
I saw the original line-up back in 73 or 74...Am curious if there is gonna be the same firepower without Thunders, Kane and Nolan....How are they dressing on stage these days?...P.S....Were the Berries ever offered a slot on the Little Stevie garage thing?...He was at the show in N.Y. and I know that he is a fan... JohnO
There's plenty of firepower with the new guys, although I understand they recently went from 6 to 5 pieces (Brian Koonin on keyboards left). Steve Conte, the new lead guitarist, plays like Thunders, only in tune all night (!?) Sammy, the bassist from Hanoi Rocks plays a lot like Killer, and the drummer's fine. It's still somewhat chaotic sounding, but more controlled. Most of the bands doing the Little Steven thing are plugging new product....or relatively new product. Even the Shadows of Knight put out a new CD in '05 (not very good). Also, they're bands that Steve is playing on his show a lot, and I don't believe I've heard him play any Raspberries tunes yet. (NOTE: He's played very little Zombies, but they have 2 recent CDs - a studio effort from late 04 and a live import double CD). The Charms, Romantics, Chesterfield Kings, Supersuckers - he's been playing their CDs. Once Eric & co. release the new live CD, this would be a great way to plug it, but I'm not sure if they'd want to do the traveling caravan type of thing - 35-45 minutes a night, playing before several hundred fans. Lew Bundles
Last night"s show was a pretty decent one, but the Dolls set was an abbreviated one(because of the format, I guess)...Everything was played at a quicker tempo which led to an even greater sense of "Controlled chaos"...It looks as though Sylvain is real sentimental about the whole thing, moreso than Johansen...No "Bad Girl" which is a favorite of mine...A heavy dose of the new CD, which, luckily I already own and was quite familiar with...I saw the last Little Stevie concoction with the Shadows of Knight...One of the songs on the new CD was co-written by a guy I know, who used to play in the band 30 plus years ago...He went on to play with Neal Smith and Dennis Dunaway (nee Alice Cooper Group) but passed away a few years ago...Is there gonna be any more "Garage" tours?...Its a cool concept and the go-go girls are an entertaining way to pass the time in between band set-ups... JohnO
Sunday night's show was pretty good. The Dolls were clearly the highlight. Local band The Hall Monitors were awful, and The Charms (from Boston) played pretty much their same set they played at last month's Underground Garage show at the Black Cat. The Chesterfield Kings did their usual Yardbirds-meet-the-Stones act, with a special kudo for their covering The Eye's "I'm Rowed Out". I thought the Supersuckers were pretty boring....odd, as I enjoy their CDs. The Dolls, now a 5 piece, ripped through a somewhat abbreviated set (12 songs plus a couple of encores), including 5 from the new CD (We're All In Love, Fishnets and Cigarettes, Dancing On the Lip of the Volcano, Dance Like A Monkey, & Gimme Luv & Turn On The Lights), speeding up several tunes, as Lew said above. (I don't think they could play Trash any faster if they tried!)...a little less than an hour in total for their set. Afterwards, they stayed and signed the new CDs for anyone who purchased one at the show....I was gone by then (up by 5 AM for work, and it was around 12:30 at the time...). Still a great, great live act!
