At the risk of stirring tons of sh*t up, here's another useless, annoying, moronic list! I picked up the latest issue of the Brit music mag Q, which has their "100 Greatest Singers and Their 1,000 Greatest Songs" (each singer's 10 best songs). I won't print the entire list (anybody can google it), but here are a few comments:

# 1-6, IMO, are fine, although I don't necessarily agree with the order - 1 - Elvis,

2 - Aretha, 3- Frank Sinatra, 4 - Otis Redding, 5 - John Lennon, and 6 - Marvin Gaye.

Things start heading south with #7 - Kurt Cobain (!!?????). 8 is Robert Plant, 9 is Mick Jagger, and 10 is Jeff Buckley. Aside from Cobain, whose selection is just plain bizarre.....it's a decent enough Top 10.

Other - Liam Gallagher (Oasis) at #11???

Thom Yorke (Radiohead) at #13???

Johnny Cash at #14????? (especially considering no George Jones, no Merle Haggard, no Gram Parsons)

John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) at 16????

Bob Dylan at #18 ??? (at least, they admit he's an "acquired taste"...I love his music, but 18th best singer????)

20 - Carl Wilson - great choice!

26 - Bono - ?????

28 - Bowie - too low, IMO

29 - Dusty Springfield - ditto

30 - Morrisey - ????????????

31 - Bob Marley - but no Toots Hibbert

32 - McCartney - Way too low!!!

37 - James Brown - While one of my all-time faves, the 37th best singer????????

40 - Jim Morrison - ??

42 - Michael Stipe - ??

43 - Bon Scott - ???????????

45 - Elton John - Don't care for his music, but he should be higher.

46 - Howlin' Wolf - Love his music AND his voice, but he sounded like a cross between a foghorn and a moose in heat!!!

48 - Karen Carpenter - Glad to see she's included.

49 - Are you ready???? - PATTI SMITH!!!!!!!!!

(ha ha ha ha ha ha)

50 - Jack White (White Stripes) - see comments above on Patti Smith

54 - Leonard Cohen - ???!!!???

63 - Iggy Pop - perhaps the greatest frontman ever, but a singer????

65 - Neil Young - see comments on Dylan.

71 - Tom Jones - why is he so low here?

72 - Lou Reed - see comments on Patti Smith.

75 - Tom Waits - !!??!!??!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?

(Love the guy's music, but a singer???)

80 - Nico - see comments on Lou Reed

87 - Axl Rose - ??????

Not included - Paul Rodgers, James Carr, George Jones (described by Sinatra as America's 2nd best singer, about 20 years ago), Muddy Waters, Bobby Blue Bland, Solomon Burke, Frankie Miller, Richard Manuel, Chris Farlowe, Howard Tate, Wilson Pickett, and a slew of others I can't remember......

I'm sure record producers everywhere would jump on the chance to make a record with Yoko over Mariah or Celine!

Does anybody remember many years ago when CREEM magazine voted the Raspberries (top five) as both "Best New Artist" AND "Worst New Artist" in the same year in the same poll?
