marvin
As if two sets of cover songs (1950's and 1960's)wasn't enough, Barry is returning with a set of 1970's covers! He's even covering himself on this collection. Will the madness never cease? http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003609492 On the bright side, he'll eventually run out of 20th century decades.Marv
aggiesjc
oh, jeez. As if the whole concept isn't bad enough, Rosie O'Donnell is featured on one of the songs!!!!!!! I couldn't even listen to this stuff or it would ruin a bunch of great songs for me.

Why anyone would buy this tripe is beyond me.Maybe when he does the '90s version he can duet with Rosie on Aerosmith's "Dude Looks Like a Lady." aggiesjc
He'll have to cover the '80s first. What do you propose for him for some good '80s classics, PD? Maybe he could do "Ebony and Ivory" with Stevie Wonder.

angelina
<----anxiously awaiting Manilow's cover of 50 Cent's "In Da Club". Hopefully he doesn't break his hip. Even Rod Stewart cut a few too many of these albums.
Lee Marshall
Actually...I wish ol' Barry would go on strike...and never settle.I was OK for Mandy and I Write the Songs and then...I quickly began to lose interest. For those that like him...groovy. For me...he's 100% MUZACK.
ira
Even a "Schmaltzy" (syrupy, corny) softie like me finds this almost cynically, and commercially, over the top already-even for Mr. Manilow.-Ira.
marvin
Barry's just trying to keep Clive happy and also trying to keep up with Rod. How many covers albums is Rod up to now? 8, 9, 10? I believe Rod's next is going to be: "The First Rock - Album / Greatest Songs from the Stone Age."After that he's teaming up with Barry, doing each others songs. I believe that one's called "I'm Covering You."Marv
AnneG
How about Barry, Rod, Donny Osmond (another known for covers), and Michael Jackson (just because..) grouping together as the "Old Ones on The Block", and they can cover N'Sync, Backstreet Boys, etc.Anne

Matthew C. Clark
This is actually the second of his 70's covers. His CD called "Summer Of '78" was released back in 1996. Matt

Matthew C. Clark
The CD is okay. I think that the "Summer Of '78" may be out of print. Matt

AnniekNY
If you are brave enough, listen to "2:00 a.m. paradise Cafe" and "Barry Manilow" (6th album, self titled)I have played "2:00 a.m." for people who had no idea it was Barry because it's jazz. A great album, Mel Torme and Sarah Vaughan sings on it, lots of great guests like Gerry Mulligan. "When October Goes" is my favorite cut - Johnny Mercer's widow gave Barry a whole bunch of lyrics never set to music and this is one of the results. A truly great album. The second album is like her earlier work but has a maturity to it. "Keep each other warm" is my favorite on this one.Not a fan of the newer compliations. marvin
Annie I've got nothing against Barry's past work, but this slew of covers, just like Rod's, shows very little integrity on their part and reeks of nothing more than a way to make a quick buck. However, this is a Catch-22 situation: as long as people are scooping up the product, the product will be there to be scooped up.Marv
MAM
2:00 AM Paradise Cafe is one of my favorite albums. The vibe between all the musicians involved is great and I think that it's awesome that the entire album was recorded from start to finish in one take "live" in the studio. "When October Goes" is indeed a great song!
Cozmik
Thing about Rod Stewart is a good percentage of his (best!) material throughout his career has been covers. It didn't get obnoxius until he kept going back to the American Songbook well too many times. His last CD of rock covers wouldn't have been out of line prior to that and would have been just another Stewart album. What I've heard from it was pretty good.Whats really funny is the reports of people leaving his shows angry because he's not doing the American Songbook material. pierre
I recently came across a video of Barry's 2004 farewell concert. What's amazing is how much he looks like Rod Stewart! It wasn't too bad, until the nauseating finale with "My Country 'Tis of Thee" and flags all over the place. I thought it was a parody, but it wasn't.

AnniekNY
BOB - OH MY GOD!!!!! I agree with you Marvin...I think it's a clive driven project. I think I read somewhere that he really didn't want to do the albums but out of respect for clive he did them.
