New Music? I'm clueless

I have to admit that when it comes to new music, I’m totally clueless. That's more my stubborness than anything else. Maybe if my children were older, I'd know more about current music, but since that's not the case, I don’t listen to anything ‘current.’ When people ask me “Have you heard the new song by _____________?†I have to admit ignorance. Having said that, here are a couple of songs that I think are fairly recent that hit the right buttons for me.

Daniel Powter – Love You Lately: http://youtube.com/watch?v=-VlIDAIp814

John Mayer – Waiting For the World to Change: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXWXQeHCWpo

I like the Daniel Powter song...... The John Mayer didn't grab me straight away...I think for me I would like to sit and listen to it a few times as it strikes me as a song that would grow on you the more you play it.

Thanks for them though Marvin 'cause like you in a different way, (my kids are all left home) I tend not to listen to and get to know much new music.

Muzza cool

Geez, you guys have to get with the times!! My hubby, wallytosa only likes to listen to 70's rock and oldies! Yeesh! How else are you all gonna be able to keep up with your kids! I check out VH1 and MTV a lot to listen to the new stuff, and also listen to the current radio stations. I am 48 but refuse to act like I am 78. Come on, there really is some interesting stuff out there. Expand your horizons!

There's way more to choose from that that which receives airplay on radio or on [shudder] TV via videos.

AND...many of your favourite artists from back in the day are still recording too.

The radio/recording industry is flawed though. The formula for garnering airplay is still contolled by dollars and [lack of] sense.

And copy-catism is the horror of the day.

Don't get me wrong: I listen to a ton of music, old and new, but there is nothing 'new' that really grabs me - and by 'new' I don't mean a band that has been recording for 10+ years and still releasing product.

With all due respect Paula, you couldn't pay me enough to watch MTV or VH-1. Just not my cup of tea.

Since my children are only 9 and 5 1/2, they're still at an age where they listen to the music of their 78 year old father!

Interestingly, I made the same 'children' reference to someone in our band who has older children. There are those in our band who do listen to 'new' music that has been introduced to them by their children. It's a good way to stay somewhat relevant, I guess.

For those of us who are older, we've had the good fortune (or bad fortune depending on your point of view) of having been weened on music that has stood the test of time. I'd say that much of the music that gets on the radio today is forgotten within months.

Record companies today will not let an artist grow and develop through two or three albums, like they used to do. Therefore, the artist needs that first song to be a big hit, and as a result, you get more 'one hit wonders' than ever before, music/radio becomes disposable, and you get people like me who are either ignorant to 'new' music, or just not interested enough.

I will now step off my soapbox.

Some young'uns today "get it". I burned a CD for a friend to play on the drive to NY with her husband and children. Naturally there were many Raspberries songs. The two eldest children (15 and 12) immediately recognized the Beatles and some other influences and eagerly started discussing the music. Their father didn't see the links and so a rather heated discussion ensued (my friend joined in with her sons).

Fortunately her chidren still continue to learn from her!! And, yes, those boys are getting a Raspberries DVD!!!

I'm with you Marv. I haven't heard anything "new" per se. I don't watch MTV or VH-1 for the videos in order to keep up with the new stuff but they do have some interesting countdowns, etc. My children are 10 and 7 and they do like Hilary Duff and the HSM soundtrack along with the Cheetah Girls Soundtracks. That is pretty much what they listen to every once in awhile when the mood strikes them. They do like Eric's music and The Raspberries(hmmm... I wonder who introduced them to their music?)

I have to admit though I am really starting to appreciate the music that was playing while I was growing up(just too young to remember).

Hi Marv,

I don't watch much videos, but I do listen to the radio when I am home. The station I listen to plays a lot of old and new rock music. My daughter is 18 and she introduced to me to some of the music she likes. I have to admit, I am a big Nickelback fan now. I just love Rock Star; did you know that Billy Gibbons does the background vocals on that?

I like some of the music by Shinedown and Hinder. My favorites are Lips of an Angel by Hinder and I Dare You and Save Me by Shinedown.

I also like Daniel Powter's Had a Bad Day.

There is some good new music out there, we just have to search for it.

for pop fans, it's tough to tell how 2007 will shape up....

I'm hoping for the long overdue Chamber Strings follow up to "Month Of Sundays"-- their myspace page has at least one great new song on it...

for the best new pop I've heard since late late 2006, try Johan...

the best to place to start is on their myspace page... it's: www.myspace.com/johan4all

there should be songs from the new album ("JHN THX") on that page... what i've heard so far is pure amazing...

for more eclectic tastes, K-os is the most out of the blue fluke genius hip-hop pop records I've ever heard.... imagine PM Dawn with more edge...

for darker dronier rock tastes, Veitnam was another surprise... brings to mind Dream Syndicate, Rain Parade, The Band & My Morning Jacket.....

I listen to new stuff....but mostly indie. Most of the new material on major labels doesn't have any substance. But the small-label stuff seems to have a bit more substance...the majors aren't really "getting it".

Check out college radio, they have some really good stuff there....

My son, Matt is 12 and just starting to think about music. Most of his friends have Ipods and he seems to think he might be interested in getting one. I am thinking, not yet, as he really doesn't seem all that interested in music yet and is way too busy with his sports.

But I like to keep up to date with the times so I will be able to help him make 'better' choices when the time arives. Also, important is keeping an eye out on the video games he plays.

I want him to appreciate all kinds of music, hey, his first concert experience was the berries in Waukesha back a couple years!!! I never dreamed my sons first concert would be the Raspberries!!!

As I have never been a fan of music videos...I get NO inspiration there. As today's 'hit' radio stations play very little that I want to hear even a 2nd time...I get NO inspiration there. AND as the so-called adult oriented snooze-festivals play nothing but pablum...as if we're all dead or have suddenly adopted the musical tastes of our parents on extra strength valium......I get absolutely NO inspiration there either.

I seek and find the new music I want. It has, by virtue of the nature of the BEAST, become strictly a personal home-work exercise. Hit music hasn't been this rancidly meaningless since the late 50s/early 60s when the various and sundry 'bobbys' were dominating the airwaves with their made for parent's approval/watered down pop and roll.

And even when the Beatles crossed the ocean...every group didn't try to sound just like them. Not like so many so-called 'rock' bands today sound like cheap imitations of the barely impressive [at the best of times] Green Day.

Just exactly when was the collective baby-boomer generation declared officially dead?

Kinda sucks in an HUGE way.

Marvin,

You're not alone....I don't follow it and I've really tried!

Trouble with John Mayer's stuff, is once you get past that first tune, "Waiting for the World To Change" (which reminds me of an up-tempo Beck/Stewart "People Get Ready") the rest of the album is slow, repetitive and really doesn't go anywhere. I'm glad the internet lets you listen to samples before you buy!

I think an earlier post hit the nail on the head - that artists today really are not encouraged to experiment and change their style - basically grow and evolve! In the recent years, the only new artist I found to come up with an album I could listen to all the way through was Matchbox 20. Unfortunately, Rob Thomas' solo material doesn't hold up as well. I've grown tired of wasting money on new material only to be disappointed when the one or two songs I've heard played on the radio are nothing at all like the rest of the album.

I guess I'll be stuck in the '50s through the '80s...

As for my kids, who are still rather young - most of the movies and shows they watch tend to feature '70s and '80s Rock slaughtered, er...um, (more politely put) covered by some new up-and-coming artist. So, thus far, I am safe when I play the original version. I don't want to think what will happen when the teenage years hit - YIKES!

Maybe someone should start a support group for all us "AGED" listeners - LOL!

50s through 80s AJ? 50s - First half of the 80s...for me. After that...not so much.

By the time the 90s rolled in...by and large, I was so bored by what was [not] happening that I delved headlong into Reggae. I HAD to play the 'kerrap' that the radio station MADE me play. I didn't have to like it, listen to it or buy it. [And compared to now some of that 'stuff' was fairly decent.]

Instead I went back to the dawn of the Jamaican music scene and worked my way forward. Oddly...even though I didn't grow up with it...The 50s through 80s music of choice in Jamaica is also my favourite.

Must have been the 'vibe' of the times. Although I must say...MUCH of the Jamaican music in the 90s kicked/kicks the living daylights out of what was charting on Billboard's Hot 100 during that entire decade and beyond.

Fashion...has allowed those who run things up here to decide that melodies are no longer necessary. It's all about the beat.

Not on my equipment it isn't. [as Peter Tosh once wrote..."Dem a Haffi Get a Beatin"]

You're not alone Marv!

I used to pride myself in "discovering" new music. Over the last few years I've found it harder and harder to find anything I like. Nickleback, John Mayer, Coldplay I've heard through friends, and I've found them all to be a bit boring. (The bands, not my friends!lol) I don't have kids, wouldn't even think of watching MTV or VH1 (for one thing, when do they even play music anymore?)

The last "new" band I can even remember buying a CD of was Everclear, and that was "Songs from an American Movie, Vol 1" from 2000!

Jeff
