BeatleJay
Anything sung by Joe Cocker!
ira
"The Letter" by the Box Tops is exactly what The Raspberries are about-the GREAT 2-to 3 minute rock and Roll single.Joe Cocker's version is the vocal equivalent of the the 20 minute drum solo that E.C. rails about and Cocker sucks the life out of this song like he sucks the joy out of "With a little Help From My Friends".My opinion-Ira. Carmen Smalley
Maybe Michael Mc Donald and Lionel Richie´s Change Of Heart. Also Andy Gibb´s End Of The World.
Poor4Life
I don't think I've ever disliked any of Ronstadt's covers. She always brought a whole lot of exhuberence to them. I also have to agree with Marvin on "It's OK". Thats still one of my all time favorite BB tracks!OK, here's a REALLY bad cover. "All Right Now" (the Free tune) covered by Rod Stewart on his 1984 Camoflage album. Even he has said he's embarassed by it. LOLJeff
marvin
Ira what I like about Cocker's version of "The Letter" is, he took a pretty simple pop song and turned it into a soul-based/r&B work-out. The version our band does is Cocker's version.Marv
ira
Marvin-thank you ,sincerely, for such an eloquent rebuttal .I really can see your point of view as well.I always look forward to your musical "take" and insights.I still hope noone does a 7 minute version of "Cry Like A Baby".(Just kidding.)-Ira. marvin
We also do the Box Tops' "Soul Deep."Marv
ira
Marvin,I always thought "Soul Deep" was essentially a Grass Roots song without the brass.(Wonderful song though-let's make that clear.) I saw the Box Tops as the second act at an Atlantic City show on my birthday in June 2004.It was my present to myself. Their set was brief and Chilton was definitely doin'it for the money-but hearing "Soul Deep" and "Sweet Cream Ladies"-was worth the price of admission. (Whoops-I fotgot-I heard "Neon Rainbow" too.)-Ira.

James
Great Covers: "Up On A Roof", James Taylor"Stand By Me", Mickey GilleyBoth these remakes did what I look for in a cover,..they created something very different from the original AND took the songs to greater heights. ira
I love the production on "Do You Wanna "Dance" by the "Beach Boys" and I think Dennis sings lead which is kinda nice. This song was a major hit 3 times.Besides "Handy Man"(-Jimmy Jones,Del Shannon, James Taylor-) can anyone think of songs that were major hit SINGLES 3 times.(I think(?) "All By Myself" was only a big single twice. Is the version on Simon Cowell's prodigies new smash album getting radio play and downloads and is it therefore kinda like a hit single-making this a three-time hit too?)Curious to hear your answers.-Ira. Paulie Mississippi
The absolute most horrid cover I ever heard: Gary Puckett's rendition of the Jim Steinman penned, Makin' Love Out of Nothing at All ; made famous by Air Supply in the '80's... Ira, just going with remakes I know off the top of my head and then looking up their chart position (Source: Joel Whitburn's Top Pop Singles 1955-2002) "Locomotion" was a top 5 hit in 3 different decades; Little Eva took it to #1 in the 60's, Grand Funk topped the charts with it in the 70's, & Kylie Minogue took it to #3 in the 80's.(My husband was kinda bummed that no one had a hit with it in the 90's.)"Wonderful World" made the top 20 three times -- Sam Cooke (#12 1960), Herman's Hermits (#4 1965), Art Garfunkel (#17 1978)"Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" was in the top 40 three times -- Shirelles (#1 1961) Four Seasons (#24 1968), Dave Mason (#39 1978)"Unchained Melody" was in the top 10 FOUR times Les Baxter (#1 1955), Al Hibbler (#3 1955) Roy Hamilton (#6 1955) The Righteous Brothers (#4 1965) who had a hit with it again in 1990 (#13) and June Valli took it to #29 in 1955. Makes me wonder if there were any other songs on the chart in 1955.Creedence's version of "Heard It Through the Grapevine" just missed the top 40 (#43) and of course there are the classic versions by Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight & the Pips. (While popular from those great claymation commericals, The California Raisins version peaked at #84.)"What's Going On" made the top 40 three times -- Marvin Gaye (#2 1971), Cyndi Lauper (#12 1987), Artists Against AIDS (#27 2001)"Big Yellow Taxi" Joni Mitchell (#24 1975 live version), Neighborhood (#29 1970), Counting Crowes (don't know the chart position)"Everlasting Love" -- four times in the top 40 that I can confirm -- possibly five, but I don't know how high U2's version got on the chartsRobert Knight (#13 1967) Carl Carlton (#6 1974), Rex Smith/Rachel Sweet (#32 1981), Gloria Estefan (#27 1995)"Hurt So Bad" Little Anthony & the Imperials (#10 1965), Letterman (#12 1969); Linda Ronstadt (#8 1980)"Go Away Little Girl" Steve Lawrence #1 1963, Happenings (#12 1966), Donny Osmond (#1 1971)"How Sweet It Is" (to be Loved by You) Marvin Gaye (#6 1965), Jr. Walker (#18 1966), James Taylor (#5 1975)"Fever" Little Willie John (#24 1956), Peggy Lee (#8 1958), McCoys (#7 1965).I'm sure others will post more. ira
ScentLady-I love the Whitburn book-but I don't own it.How about "You Belong To Me"-though I know Dean Martin and Joni James were not from the "Rock Era" when they covered this song-does this song count as a hit done over 3 times? I love the Duprees version. Anyone see them on PBS this weekend?-Ira.

(Yes, I looked it up Whitburn does mention that Jo Stafford had a #1 hit with it in 1952. Have seen the Duprees on PBS perform it. Really enjoy those shows. Very sad history about the Duprees -- two of the members died before they were 40.
