No doubt about it, The Christmas song(Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire). I heard it sung live at a sold-out by Natalie Cole at a Christmas concert at The Universal Amphitheatre. This song, by three-time Grammy Award Winner, Mel Torme(A Spanish name, pronounced Tormeh), means alot to me, since I've also met his sibblings, Daisy and James( www.JamesTorme.com ). I met them at Disneyland. I heard of Daisy, because she hosted a Standards radio program. I think, in the next year that she will be on-line on an internet broadcast Standards music show. I gave Daisy an original Rock Christmas song, hand-written. A card, and a unique Christmas woven bulb Ice-Hockey Ducks cap. The Ducks are now the best team in the NHL.

Mel Torme now has a street named after him, in Las Vegas last year.

Daisy and James mom and grandmother are famous Bristish actresses, Janette Scott and Thora Hird. You might see their movie credits online.

James was first interested in music when his mom bought him Michael Jackson's record-breaking Off The Wall album. I've met Michael's touring drummer, Ndugu Chancler, from his two record-breaking albums. You can hear Ndugu playing live at www.myspace.com/JonGibsonBand (You've Gotta Love Somebody). Jon has a live YouTube spot on his myspace web page. If you have good speackers, near the end, when Jon says, 'C'mon, C'mon, C'mon- Ndugu is not only doing the very fast drum roll, but also hitting the symbols at the same time. Jon, a friend, has written 22 top 5 and nine number one's on the gospel charts, and the record for the longest playing gospel single, at 18 weeks. And a Christmas song, too. He told me that two of his own albums with Ndugu were done live by all of the musicians in one take, except for the original keyboard tracks. He gave them the charts, and that was it.

James, who is on several radio stations, wanted to sing only R&B, but changed when he saw the reaction to Jazz song "Round Midnight" from a live audience. Once he heard Earth, Wind and Fire, Blood Sweat and Tears; and Steely Dan, that sealed his wanting to sing and perform.

Like all of you, I've heard tons of Christmas songs.... But there's one that I put above all others: the Pretenders' version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Man, that's powerful! Chrissie Hynde gives it a poignancy and wistfulness that knocks me out every time.

It's a great song anyway, capturing the "bond" of family like no other. It makes you (well, me) realize all the things for which we ought to be grateful. I love the way Chrissie sings:

"Through the years we all will be together, if the Fates allow...."

So... if I were to make a top 12 list, it would be:

12. Wilson Sisters: "Hey Santa" (my daughters really dig this song --- you've gotta hear 'em sing it)

11. Paul McCartney: "Wonderful Christmas Time" (used to annoy me, but I've done a 360 on it....)

10. Stevie Nicks: "Silent Night" (a bit "heavy," but as haunting as they come)

9. Dean Martin: "Baby It's Cold Outside"

8. Brenda Lee: "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree"

7. Bobby Helms: "Jingle Bell Rock"

6. Bruce Springsteen: "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town"

5. Beach Boys: "Little Saint Nick"

4. Band Aid: "Do They Know It's Christmas?"

3. U2: "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)"

2. John Lennon: "Happy Christmas"

1. Pretenders: "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"

Hollies65, yep, I do. Darlene's "Christmas" is a classic, of course, but U2's version just explodes---but that's just me. You can prefer Darlene's if you'd like! :-)

(Hey, my list is pick-apart-able.... I know a lot of people don't like Band Aid's big song, but I love it. Music can be kind of a personal thing, don't you think?)

Marv, my daughters love that whole Wilson Sisters Christmas CD.... They seem obsessed with the fact that they're "the Beach Boy's daughters," as they call 'em. They love the last track on the disc --- a recording of "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" made when the Wilson sisters were little kids. It's got those little-girl vocals, and Brian on piano, and Beach Boys harmonies.... It's cute as heck. There's a nice version of "Rudolph" on the same CD.

"Always brings back memories of the late 70s early 80s being single , no significant other."

I'd forgotten about the Waitresses' Xmas song, which brings back memories of....now, actually (being single, no significant other) - and there ARE many advantages, but, unfortunately many disadvantages as well, especially at this time of the year...

(NOTE: At least, unlike my younger sister, I never deliberately broke up with a girlfriend or significant other just before Christmas, to avoid having to buy them a present...)

I like that song, "Hey Santa", too, Marv because of the beat and lyrics. I like "We Need A Little Christmas" because it's different from the rest. It has a Broadway stage-musical feel, with fun, lyrics that showcase what people do this time of year. It has a fast Um-Pah-Um-Pah type of beat. Here's a simple music only, with written lyrics played on organ, trombone, accordian, and other instruments. http://my.homewithgod.com/heavenlymidis/Christmas/littlechristmas.html

Here's the lyrics: www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/mame/weneedalittlechristmas.htm
