GMan
A few nights ago Jay52 and myself were wondering where all the Stones fan are. We all talk about the wonderful music we love but it just seems odd no one has brought up The Rolling Stones.

hollies65
I love ALL of the very popish Stones songs from the 60s...'Out Of Time'...'Danlelion'....'Jigsaw Puzzle'...'Flowers' is a superb record and at the moment 'Santanic Majesties' is my favorite.album by them...it has a bunch of FANTASTIC psych-pop songs . hollies65
The Stones do not seem to be a board favorite...I love em...I know Eric is a huge Keef fan.
GMan
And I knew you'd be there too Steve! I just love all their stuff prior to and including"Exile On Main Street"!! I really love "Mercy Mercy" off of "Out Of Heads".
GMan
"Out Of Our Heads" excuse me!! lol
hollies65
I love everything everything up to Exile also...I really liked 'Goats Head Soup',and 'Black & Blue', but they are not up to the prior level. Also Mick Taylor's solo on "It's Only Rock&Roll's' ''Time Waits For No One' is one of the greatest things ever.
GMan
Mick Taylor was ONE HELLUVA GUITARIST!!!!!!!!
GMan
I really loved that Brian Jones period. They all looked so cool. I was never one of those Beatle or Stones guys. I loved them both!!! Gun to my head...Beatles...not of this earth!
marvin
Sorry for staying silent, I also love the Stones - up to and including "Some Girls." After that, it's 'hit and miss' with me.
blackhawkpat
I love the majority of the Stones radio hits, which there are plenty, but not a big fan of their remaining album cuts. "Tumblin' Dice" is my favortie single, but "Some Girls" is my favorite album by them.
John P
The new Mick Jagger solo best of contains a superb previously unreleased John Lennon produced gem titled "too many cooks (don't spoil the whole soup)" that was recorded in 1973. I had no idea that those 2 ever recorded together in the 70's.
GMan
That's OK Marv..we knew you would show..lol and I have to agree with you that after "Some Girls" it is definitely hit and miss.
GMan
Yes John...May Pang gave quite a detailed explanation of "Too Many Cooks" in her book about her life with John.
marvin
There were a couple of new songs on "Forty Licks" ("Don't Stop" and "Stealing My Heart") which I thought were pretty strong, and even their latest, "A Bigger Bang" had some good tunes. Early Wynn
Love the Stones...up until Mick Taylor left. After that...well, there's a track here and there that I like, but IMO Some Girls sounds a lot like their last CD - and everything in between. marvin
Early I agree with you that a lot of the stuff since "Some Girls" sounds the same. I can almost predict where and when Charlie is going to come in with his fills, where the Wyman / Jones bass lines are going, etc. Still, there has been the odd gem here and there since "Some Girls." MJ
I also liked Mick Taylor as well as Brian Jones - I loved the early stuff and I also agree with after Some Girls - it was a hit and miss - Some Girls though is still a fav with me - Shattered is just a classic lol - right up there with Dandelion, Ruby Tuesday (which I quoted for my yearbook lol) and a host of other gems from that period. marvin
From "Some Girls", "Beast Of Burden" was always my favourite. Love the drumming and bass playing on that song.
GMan
Definitely my favorite on "Some Girls" too Marv. Great song!
JohnO
Hmmmm...to me, this is kinda like asking "Are there any Beatles fans out there?" Personally, I got heavily into the Stones, Pretty Things, Yardbirds and other blues-influenced Brits around the same time as The Beatles, and always thought the "Beatles vs. Stones" nonsense was exactly that - nonsense! Yes, their output has been uneven as Hell over the past 20+ years - just as the solo Beatles' has been....and anyone else's of that age bracket who's still going at it. Even so, they always seem to come up with a few new gems every new album. Personally, would like to see them go back to their roots at this point (hinted at with the VERY Muddy Waters-sounding "Back Of My Hand" on the last CD) or maybe make an old-fashioned Stax/Volt-style soul album....their old soul covers they do are usually among the highlights of their live shows, at least to me.Another alternative - I think they could be rejuvenated once again if they actually hired (or just used) a guitarist who complements Keef, as opposed to one (Woody) who pretty much plays just like him. (On the other hand, I thought Mick Taylor, who had been a brilliant replacement for Peter Green in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, was somewhat wasted and under-utilized as a Stone...). hollies65
Except on 'Time Waits For No One'. Talk about an underrated Stones track!
JohnO
Hollies - Agree that Mick T. got in some killer licks & riffs here and there...but overall, considering the guy's talent level, I think he was somewhat wasted in the band....Also, Jagger/Richard screwed him royally as far as denying him songwriting credits on most of the Stones albums he played on....one of the main reasons, I'm sure, that he left. What's funny - While they went out and stole him from Mayall with little fanfare right after axing Brian J......when Mick T. left the band, all of the UK tabloids ran articles trying to guess who would take his place in the Stones - among the candidates named at the time - Mick Ronson, Nils Lofgren, Jeff Beck, Harvey Mandel, Roy Buchanan (now THAT would have been interesting - Buch, who was capable of outdrinking and outdrugging any human on Earth, in the Stones...), Wayne Perkins, and, not surprisingly, Ronnie Wood!Sadly, Mick T.'s solo career has been, shall we say, unspectacular, to say the least..... Lee Marshall
Thought Bigger Bang was an excellent lp. First one that's knocked me out since Sticky Fingers. The Stones went down the toilet in many ways once they lost the guiding light provided by Brian Jones. Mick became a card-board cutout. A facsimile of himself...and not a very good one. Keith? Just a lost soul to begin with. Wyman? Only interested in getting laid. Charlie? What's he been doin' hangin' out with that 'lot' all these years? Ronnie? Still just a fill-in.The most over-rated band in R & R...at least for the past 35 years or so.But back when they were GREAT...they most certainly were GREAT.Kind of got the impression that Bigger Bang was their swan song and that didn't want to 'retire' leaving nothing but a 35 year litany of junk as their legacy. Nice to leave something that compared favourably to what they managed to achieve during their first decade. [with Brian]
