TOMMY TUNES
Hollies65, You've just confirmed what I already suspected; you have great taste. How about "Girl Talk" for Dave Edmunds? I may have picked different TUNES but you definitely have the right artists. One I would have put on would be "Pretty Vacant", "Holiday In The Sun" or "bodies" by The Sex Pistols. How about "Too Late" by Shoes?
hollies65
Or 'EMI or 'Anarchy' or 'Tomorrow Night' or 'Creature From The Black Lagoon' or 'Trouble Boys'...I really could have 5 or 6 different lists for he 70s...there were so many great songs. Paul Davie
This is just too hard! So many sub-genres of music styles formed throughout that decade. But here we go with my thoughts, based on a combination of commercial success (a 'hit'), longevity (on the radio to this day), songwriting (the art form, that supercedes radio airplay) and my personal taste (leaning towards the rock/pop/power pop genre)...and in no particular order:No Matter What - Badfinger (the consummate song I would want to be stuck on a desert island with)Surrender - Cheap Trick (more power! more key changes! more drug references!)Dream On - Aerosmith (33 years later, it will never fade)Go All The Way - You Know Who (a perfectly written gem) What I Like About You - The Romantics (party on, Garth)Alison - Elvis Costello (Radio Radio is a close second...I feel his pain)Jealous Guy - John Lennon (This sends me shivers every time....more than Imagine)It's Too Late - Carole King (genius. 'nuff said)How Can You Mend A Broken Heart - The Bee Gees (how can a song seem so beautifully structured... when it really isn't?)Tush - ZZ Top (a guilty pleasure of a 3 chord rocker, talking about being horny...with a great slide solo)
hollies65
I could make a list filled with 70s soft rock songs in the 'How Can You Mend A Broken Heart' mode.'Sara Smile''Fool If You Think It's Over''Heard It In A Love Song''Year Of The Cat'...etcDoes anyone remember a song called 'Sweetheart' by Frankie and The Knockouts?? Lee Marshall
Wow!!! The impossible list. Gonna go on FIRST impressions rather than apres the burnout created by radio stations with narrow playlists who may have subsequently buried the best songs by playing them to death over the past 28 to 37 years...I'm pickin' one song per year.........70. Spirit in the Sky...Norman Greenbaum71. I Just Wanna Celebrate...Rare Earth72. Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress...Hollies73. Superstition...Stevie Wonder74. Sundown...Gordon Lightfoot75. Fame...David Bowie76. All By Myself...Eric Carmen77. Hotel California...Eagles78. Baker Street...Gerry Rafferty79. Don't Bring Me Down...ELONot going to lp tracks...where plenty more great tunes are to be found... As the 70s progressed...it became easier to select a 'best' song...as the 'competition' became very weak.
Marc Nathan
I'm pretty sure Couldn't I Just Tell You, I'm On Fire, Sail On Sailor, Girl Of My Dreams and Baby Blue would be right up there in the top 10/15... but here's a few more I have to addMy all time favorite song (that HOW MANY OF YOU have heard?)Avenging Annie - Andy PrattAnd, then I would sprinkle in a few like:Nothing A Little Love Won't Cure - The RubinoosDream Of A Child - Burton CummingsPinball - Brian ProtheroeWorn Out Suits, Brand New Pockets - Dave EdmundsEmma - Hot ChocolateLovin' You Ain't Easy - Michel PagliaroRock And Roll Love Letter - Tim Moore/Bay City RollersWham Bam Shang A Lang - Silver(and then I would realize that there's no way in H E L L I could narrow it down to ten, and proceed to mention fifty more.) seattlesteve
Wham Bam Shang A Lang? I thought I was the only one that knew of this song, let alone liked it. There's a lot of 70's one hit wonders where people bought the 45's but I went for the album.. Silver, Gunhill Road, Brewer and Shipley, Pilot, Looking Glass, Shocking Blue, Edison Lighthouse, Norman Greenbaum, Ides of March, Blues Image, King Harvest, David Essex, Climax, Tom Clay, etc. You're really old if you can associate the above with their single. Along with "Wham-Bam" they had a couple of ballads "Musician (It's not an easy life) and "Goodbye, So long", a couple of catchy tunes "It's gonna be alright", "Climbinig" and "All I wanna do".
