sterling
Sir Paul McCartney will be on PBS's "Great Performances" on February 27. He will be performing from Abbey Road Studios in front of a small audience. He will be doing Beatle songs, Wings, and covers...plus other things. sterling
This was in the Chicago Tribune today about Paul McCartney's PBS show that begins tonight at 10 pm. "Paul McCartney: Chaos and Creation at Abbey Road (10pm WTTW Ch 11)The mini concert with the ex-Beatle takes place in the Abbey Rooad studio where, as McCartney explains to his live audience, the Beatles made most of their records with producer George Martin. There are tantalizing tidbits from a relaxed, genial McCartney about the actual process of making iconic records such as "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", a sonic epic that was created on an old-fashioned four-track recording machine. Sure, studios nowadays have computers and gizmos that make such complicated recordings easier to do, but McCartney raves about the "amazing quality" that the old school reel-to-reel recording machines gave the band's guitars. McCartney takes the audience through the process of recording on a four-track, does an interesting alternate take on "Lady Madonna" and talks about making an early recording for a grand total of four British pounds (there was only enough money to make one copy of the recording, which each band member was supposed to share with the others on a rotating basis). The one problem with this hourlong special is that it tests a music fan's patience by functioning largely as promotional tool for McCartney's new studio album, "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard." Personally, I could have done with fewer of McCartney's new songs and lots more about George Martin and the process of creating Beatles classics out of the magical chaos of Abbey Road Studios. By Maureen Ryan...moryan@tribune.com Good article to read...I can hardly wait until 10pm to see it. I am sure Eric will love this show and I hope he can see it. I am sure he can relate to all of the activity of recordings from the sixties to what they are like now as he goes through and works out the recording of the Raspberries concert in LA. Here's to you Eric and I hope you enjoy Sir Paul and all that both of you relate to so well. We are all blessed by the contributions of two muscial geniuses who have shared their talents with all of us.Phil
blackhawkpat
Fantastic! That's all I can say.
pierson
all i can say is that Paul owes Jon Brion a "user's fee" for stealing Brion's gig... Paul basically copied what is in essence a Friday night at Largo w/ Jon Brion, small intimate audience and cool musical exploration... only thing is, is that Brion's is far more inspired and impressive.. James
McCartney post-Beatles could rock & roll..."Venus & Mars/Rock Show", "Juniors Farm", "1985", "Beward My Love" are quintessential rock & roll songs...IMHO.
chris hess
HELLO..open your ears!!!! and your eyes while your at it..other than good publicity for his album..i thought this was a good move and see for musicians/fans/newcomers..etc. yeah, the beatle stories were all the same...BUT!!!...i think he might have turned another generation onto the basics of 4-tracking..not a breakthrough for lots of us..but hearing it thru paul could possibly be a plus for the young musicians who are really starting to appreciate good music, good songs in general...alas...the raspberries!!!lol, chris
